When you talked about starting for just 5 minutes a day for the first week and then using progressive overload you reminded me of exactly the same philosophy that I tried to teach clients when I was a personal trainer. This kind of principle is applicable all over the place with new habits.

I'm about 2 months into studying to become a web developer, and I just finished going through team treehouse's full stack javascript techdegree. Gonna take a short break for 3-ish days to reward myself, and then jump right into trying to make projects to add to my portfolio. Appreciate your videos man; they're what helped me take that first step to studying and even now with videos like these, inspire me to keep pushing! Keep doin what you do!

@@Sabre2015 It depends. I’d say it is probably not necessary but it could be useful to know how to solve algebraic problems if you find yourself in that scenario. I think the most important take away from algebra is learning how to solve problems and writing your own algorithms.

As someone studying M.Sc in computer science and engineering in uni, I would also like to fill in that c++ is the language to go if you're more interested in advanced game development but also if you're more interested in low level stuff, how memory works, what actually happens under the hood, and for full power and controll over your programs. Its also very easy to transition from c++ to other languages because if you understand c++, then you can easily understand the others. C# is also a good option if you don't care about the full control and power of c++ but still want to have a lot of power. C# is slightly more human and easier to deal with.

at 21 i wanted to be done with the first part of this journey. Ive gained some pretty decent skills since my vocational IT school. The Navy has taught me a lot even though i work with electronics mainly instead of strictly IT stuff. Learning about blockchain and crypto for 3 years straight as an obsession has helped me gain a lot of knowledge that I wouldnt have ever thought id have. Now here I am panicing about being 32 next month. and still have yet to really start my coding journey lol. Time to get on it! After the Navy im going full blockchain and i want to help develop or at least participate as a pioneer with this newly emerging tech! Heres to the next 10 years.

Great general advice for starting almost anything in life. As far as programming goes specifically, I think that's a perfect start. I've been working with C# and Unity throughout this past year and I've started small. Well...actually I started big but then tailored it down to something more manageable and slowly have been working myself up. In between the "Imitate" and "Innovate" phase at the moment. Probably leaning more towards the former, but I definitely feel like I understand a lot more than what I did 6 months ago. But I've been applying this to other things in my life though like learning a language (non-programming haha) and exercising. Plan on trying to do the same thing with learning pixel art soon. Starting small is such a powerful thing to turn something into a hobby that you're also passionate about. It eventually turns into something that you couldn't possibly make it through the day without doing said thing. Also, your editing is insane with your videos. I find it super cool that most of your footage isn't even stock footage but actually stuff that you captured yourself. Great stuff, man!

Overall I find this advice helpful for the people that want to start a carreer on software development. If you ask me, I would say that the most important thing you have to train and be good at, besides the tech, is the interpersonal relationships. As you mentioned, networking is extremely important, and being a person that is easy to network with makes things A LOT easier. Remember, the people that you work with today, and the people you meet in this or that event, can and will be the ones that will help you get into another job in the future.

Quite right. For any online learning for coding triple the video time. That's probably closer to your actual study time. For example if you watch a 1 hour video, it will probably take about 3 hours to make your notes, understand the concepts, follow along with examples and play around with the code yourself, do some ancillary research etc... Take your time. You're doing great.

its funny you mentioned to sit and study for 5 mins because i started working on improving past projects/read MDN on the topic i want to learn. And give myself and hour every day so it doesn't seems like a chore. I love programming but i find it hard to teach myself. But doing an hour everyday has helped me stay focused on learning.

one advantage you pointed out for JavaScript is that you can write frontend, backend and even mobile apps with just one language. I have not seen an oop language yet that is not capable of doing that. Ill admit that I only know three so far but I'm fairly sure that over time every language will become more and more similar to each other with all the frameworks and libraries being added that try to copy functionalities from other languages. I personally enjoy how java for example adds more and more functionalities from C# that I was missing for a long time and even includes more and more of it in the standard library over time. The things that you can do in one language but not in another become less and less.

Thank you for the video man. I’ve been looking into Computer coding. And it is one of the most interesting jobs I’ve seen out there.

Interestingly I’m doing pretty much everything he said, yet this is the first time I watch his videos. Personally, I learned C++ first, which is a hard language to learn but it’s worth it. Now that I look into JS, Python, Kotlin, and others, I feel like it’s super easy. It’s like training in ultramarathons to go run a regular marathon. Definitely don’t regret learning C++ first.

I wouldn’t say I’m a pro but I’ve been learning for a little while now and I know a bit. Html, css is the best place to start and you already made a site in 5 days! That’s amazing. Once you’re done with html and css, move onto JavaScript and then React. Also learn Git so you have somewhere to put your projects and you can see your progression and work overtime. Good luck!

its really simple on how to become a programmer. You learn a programming language, master the basics of it, create a app (preferably a game but anything that shows complex data storage - ie objects) and demo it at interview - then boom the rest falls into line. Something so simple has gotten so complicated that people have to watch youtube videos on it! I blame this on framework mania... "Which framework is best!" "is vue better than react?" "is php dead?" Seriously dont get hung up on BS like this as you will learn all of this tech when you get your job and progress

So, I'm not even done with the video yet but I HAD to subscribe when I saw the RuneScape segment of you standing in lumbridge hahaha. amazing. I'm actually a Exercise Physiology graduate who is doing a career pivot from healthcare into tech and I have been teaching myself HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. I just signed up for a bootcamp and I am super excited to become a software engineer. I am super thankful that I'm no longer addicted to RuneScape because if I still were I would 100% be trying to fish or afk train while coding haha. I've been on and off with it since 2008 though!

I'm learning C++ after doing my GCSE in computer science where I did a lot of Python. My goal is to make games someday and from what ive heard most games are coded in C++. I've also heard that C++ is a pain to learn, but if I learn that as my first language then maybe any others I learn in the future will be far easier. A trial by fire I guess. And afterwards I'll be able to make games afterwards.

C++ or C# w/Unity are probably the main languages for games. C# might be a wee bit easier to learn for a beginner, but C++ is definitely a great language to learn. Caleb Curry is the main man on YT for beginner-friendly C++, if you haven't already check out his channel too.

some of the best practical advice i've seen on youtube! Start small even if its 5mins a day. You can take that anywhere in life. I go to the gym 6 days a week, but it started with the goal of just getting my ass to the gym. Didn't matter what workout I did, walk on a treadmill for 20min slower than a grandma's pace, but the goal was to do something every day.

Great video. I would emphasise Step 4 Innovate. Start on your own projects from day 1. Personally I never enjoyed studying for the sake of it, but studying to build the project well I find Im more directed in my purpose. Also If possible focus on task rather than time spent. Again though great video and great advice.

yes, same! I got into coding after my favorite sci-fi books, I enjoy doing it because it gives the opportunity to discover "new" things and create things that were impossible or "non-existent" before.

For sure, the "why" is for sure a big part of whether or not people will be successful as programmers. You need a good why. If your "why" is "I want to make a lot of money" you might not get too far with coding. There are easier ways to make money, and outside of the big cities and SV, software engineers don't get paid that much more than other professional jobs. Once you hit the inevitable walls in learning to code, you might lose interest very quickly if you're solely motivated by financial gain (although it depends on circumstances). If your "why" is you have a curiosity or love of technology and always wanted to build something you think is cool, that's a far stronger motivator IME. So, start off by being really honest about why you want to code, and try and find an idea you'd love to build. There's nothing more satisfying that building a coding project and the progress you make in learning and developing will really help you on your journey. Good luck and keep at it!

The only word of caution I will say against JavaScript is that presently the Object-Oriented paradigm is still very popular in the world of professional development. JS doesn't fully support OOP the way other languages do like Java, C# or Smalltalk. By all means, learn JS, but if you want to get a thorough understanding of OOP you might need to pick up something else later on.

Treehouse is also a good place to start learning code and they even offer full tech degree after you complete a series of projects for your desired course / language...on top of that that provide a series of videos to help you secure your first tech job.. PS : if you're going to buy Dr Angela's course I would like to inform you that's it's outdated, you will face a lot of problems while following along (it was recorded in 2019)

Agreed. There are a lot of videos that are hard to follow because the APIs she’s using have changed, or the versions of different packages have changed. You can still get a lot out of it, but some parts are frustrating. I do really love her python course so far, no problems that way

I have worked in tech for 15+ years and have a BSc and MSc in Computing. Let me confirm something: Requirements for a tech role are a wish list, not actual requirements. In house recruiters know they might only get someone 60-70% qualified. The worst any employer will do is say no, and any good employer will love it if you apply again should you not be succesful. Shows you really want a job at the company. Don't hesitate, apply as soon as you can.

Kenny, is work from home as a programmer or software engineer pretty viable in today’s market? Is it possible to get what you might consider a relatively low stress job in this field that pays maybe 70-90k/year?

Yes, is started php and html and then java. I make aroun 65k per year but it keeps me alive and well.
