Correction regarding the batteries. This IS the larger batt available in FXS atm. The sizes for this bike are 3.6 and this the 7.2. The even larger battery the 14.4 are in other models. Sorry for that confusion this has been a very steep learning curve for me unlike the petrol bikes this is all new to myself. As you can imagine with all the models and specs they are not hard to confuse. However this doesn't change anything from these videos only the limits of the tech right now with this model. Please not the bike had gone back the same day the first video went to KZread so it was not possible for me to correct this after it was pointed out.

I own a 2017 Zero FXS, and now have over 21,000 miles. The only maintenance I've done is 3 new back tires and a headlamp. Even with a higher cost up front, the bike is paying for itself with fuel and maintenance savings.

To put the context of the torque into perspective for CBT riders; A standard Honda CG 125 engine has around 9.20 Nm peak @ 7k RPM A 2020 Kawasaki Z125 Pro has 9.6 Nm Peak @ 6k RPM 2020 Suzuki GSX-R 125 has 11.5 Nm peak @ 8K rpm. Again keep in mind that these are their peak torque figures... the Zero FXS has 106Nm of torque all the time. Bigger bikes; A Yamaha MT-07 peaks at 68 Nm @ 6.5k RPM Yamaha MT-10 (we're in litre bike territory now) has 111Nm @ 9k RPM. Sure you're not going to beat the MT-10 in top speeds, but you're probably going to be on the same level of performance when it comes to torque. And, also keep in mind that the MT-10 is a full licence bike, that costs as much as this little Zero FXS.

I have this bike, a 2020 zero fxs 7.2. It is in no way as quick as an Mt-10 at any speed. I have a zx10 and an Indian ftr 1200 and both leave it for dead at any speed. It’s roughly as fast as a slightly modified 390 duke in the real world. The issue is it does make that torque but it’s all controlled with the software and you don’t have instant access to it. If you did it would literally flip over off the line. Instead you get this ramp up of torque that hits maximum around 40 mph but even then it’s not 100% instant. Timing 0-60 mph for me on a full charge is around 4.5-5 seconds. That’s worlds away from a liter bike. Past 70mph it’s pretty much dead and the fastest I have gone in sport mode is 89. It’s quick but not fast.

I personally have had a test ride on the zero sr/f last year and it may be the best bike I've ever ridden, however as with the new electric tech the price point is a bit over my budget. That being said hopefully you get to do a review on that bike also for a comparison with the bigger bikes. :)

They will have to come up with something else for electric. This bike has constant power of 15hp and peak power of 28hp. You couldn't base it on peak or the motor would be overheating all the time to get 15hp. Maybe a limit on torque but that would really handicap electric (it's all about the torque straight away from 0) most electric stuff is fast off the line Vs low top speed.

Couple of things to just say. This is a review, if I say something good about it that is not "talking it up" that implies dishonesty. I am an experienced motorcycle reviewer in both petrol and ev, saying someone "will have fun on it" refers to the lightness and power and grenral way a bike makes me feel. Zero have been making EV bikes from a long time that's knda the reason they sell more and they are not £30k like some other electric I have reviewed. However in sheer numbers there are some brands of ev bike like supersoco who's moving a lot of units. All the big 4 are working on it but no one is showing their cards yet.

@@spicy110 I am a huge fan of the zero bikes and genuinely wanted to comment on a consistent theme I see when reviewers ride them. They are almost always excited, buzzing and very positive. For the zero brand, this consistency is important because a few years ago, there were a lot of doubters out there. My comment "talking it up" was intended as a great review of a deserving machine and in no way intended to imply dishonesty. No dealers in New Zealand sadly. I appreciate your comments on the supersoco which you can buy here though they are a little underpowered for my liking. Cheers

Regarding torque, it's pointless to compare the numbers in the spec sheet. The only numbers given are for shaft/crank torque and not at the wheel, once you take into account the gearbox on a petrol bike the electric bike isn't actually all that impressive. For example the DRZ400 in first gear is actually geared about 3.7x lower than the FXS so it actually peaks at 128Nm, second gear is a bit lower at 99Nm versus 106Nm from the Zero. What really should be compared is the way the torque is delivered, the electric bike always has peak torque available where as the petrol bike's available torque will vary based on RPM and what gear you're in (and subsequently how fast you're going). It's more consistent and responsive.

The battery range issue is nearly over with Energica Bikes. Their 2020 range has a 21kw option which is claimed to give 160 MOTORWAY miles or over 280 town miles, with a fast charge (built into the bike) of 40 mins. The mad thing is the torque rating...215NM. But Energica's do need an oil change for the motor, as they are oil cooled to prevent the overheat throttle back you experienced when giving it some. They are an extra £8-9K on top of the Zero SR range. The way I look at it, Zero are the Tesla equivalent, Energica are like if Ferrari started doing all electric cars. I am really interested in one of these however that price is a lot to swallow even on finance when compared to even a new 125, my daily runner is a custom high power ebike that i put through a MSVA ( that was a pain in the butt with some stupid things that are not relevant but need to be done >.< ) but any way I use that on a CBT and it has been great but it is limited by law to 28mph and as a result can't be used on a motorway and a dual carriage way is a grey area and at the end of the day it is still just a mountain bike and handles like one plus the low range so I have been looking at alternatives, and well I have tried a 125 and sure they are cheap but i just cant get used to how sluggish and well un-exiting they are and I always end up going back to the ebike even though it is limited but it just handles better and accelerates better. Hopefully the prices come down to something reasonable or better financing options become available because is seems that finance company's are taking the piss, I mean how can I get a 16k car on 0% finance for £120 a month while this bike all over is 10k but around 10% APR for around £210 a month.

  • @EQINOX187

@@chrishart8548 The problem with the 250 is it would not be legal for the situation, many people these days like my self only have a provisional and so match that with a CBT and that is all you need to be free on a 125 so it is easy and cheap, yes 250s are better but you can't use them on a provisional and cbt and you have to have a few years experience on a 125 before you can then go for the tests to progress. The reason a lot stay on 125 and rave about them is price really, they are generally cheaper to buy and insure and the CBT is fairly cheap and lasts 2 years at which point you can ether renew it or take the 3 tests though that costs more.

@@EQINOX187 all the tests are getting a bit much. I did (CBT) theory bike test (limited to 33hp 2 years) then did my car test. Didn't have to do another theory as the motorcycle theory with a test pass was good enough to not need another one. My girlfriend has done her car theory passed the car test and done a CBT. But to get her bike license now will require she does motorcycle theory CBT (again) mod1 + mod2. So she is 4 steps away from riding a full size bike

Lol. You're saying DR-Zed now ;-) This is an interesting bike though. I think it's the first nail in the coffin for ICE powered bikes. It still needs to be more practical and less pricey though, but that will come in time. Question: did you feel an less safe because of the lack of noise? I ride quite a noisy LXR 125 and I believe the noise has saved me from a few incidents.

The only thing I don't like is setting off to work at 6.30am; it is a bit offensive for the neighbours. I do feel a lot safer now when filtering through town traffic jams because I know any pedestrians dashing across between cars are definitely going to get a warning. I question the resale values as I presume battery after 3 years will be buggered. As far as cbt then these shouldn't be allowed, the acceleration is something a experienced rider doesn't always cope with.
