Correction regarding the batteries. This IS the larger batt available in FXS atm. The sizes for this bike are 3.6 and this the 7.2. The even larger battery the 14.4 are in other models. Sorry for that confusion this has been a very steep learning curve for me unlike the petrol bikes this is all new to myself. As you can imagine with all the models and specs they are not hard to confuse. However this doesn't change anything from these videos only the limits of the tech right now with this model. Please not the bike had gone back the same day the first video went to KZread so it was not possible for me to correct this after it was pointed out.

I own an FXS 7.2 here in the States, and absolutely love it! Like you I wasn't drawn to it for the "Green" aspect, but rather the purity of the ride. That said I have taken the lack of petrol needed, a step further. I built a power bank from golf cart batteries, connected it to a solar panel and inverter, and charge my FXS with the sun. So technically my bike is nuclear powered?

Regarding the where does electric power come from; At least in the UK we have pretty good renewable forms now, and we're not burning anywhere near as much fossil fuel anymore. In fact, this year, the UK went over 2 months in a row without burning any fossil fuel to generate power, compare that to 2018 where they managed only two days. Also, 2019 used just 2.1% coal for it's energy requirements, compared to over 50% in 2015. It's not perfect by any means, There is still natural gas being used, but certainly when it comes to electric power the UK, we're already using more oil in annual maintenance for cars on the road than the amount of coal we're burning. Least not forget that wind and solar power helped to generate 47% of the UK electric his year. That's more than enough to keep ALL the electric bikes and cars running in the UK, so I'd say that's a pretty good offset no matter how you look at it.

Well yes but also no, yes the the need for domestically burning fossil fuel is becoming less and less but this is not because the renewable's take up the slack because the reality is they do not, the problem with renewable's is they are not consistent energy production solar for example does not work in the dark you know at night when people get home from work and put stuff on charge / wind farms are basically lemons and even the government has sad as much because they rely on a very specific speed of wind to generate the optimal amount of energy and to little or no wind and they do not work and they actually start to use energy to keep the blades spinning all be it really slowly and to much wind they shut down to protect themselves / hydro electric well it is good but we do not have enough of them and they are also reliant on water flow and in recent years several plants actual had to shut down or run at reduced output temporarily due to a lack of water. The reality is that you forgot to mention in your comment is that sure in those years the UK domestically burned less fossil fuels but this is not because renewable are so great, no this is because Nuclear was used and also energy importing was used ( yes importing Electricity is a thing ) Energy importing happens all the time and far more often than people realize, basically it happens not because renewable are so good but because some times it is cheaper to import energy from another country than it is to burn fossil fuels domestically, when you see times when the burning of fossil fuel has a very low use or no use at all this is usually an indicator that energy importing was used, and the sad reality is the imported energy comes from country's that are big on nuclear and burning fossil fuel. it is a trick the UK use to say they are reducing fossil use and it is true they are domestically reducing it but the imported energy is almost certainly created using it but because it was not burned in the UK and is an imported energy it does not effect the statistics you mentioned so it looks like we burned less or none.

@@EQINOX187 However you look at it generating 47% from wind and solar is pretty good last year. It can only get better. But yes, as you said there is a reason why we've not moved entirely to renewable energy. As such, there is little in the way of storage for mass amounts of energy we need. However, EV owners were actually paid this year to charge their cars to take off burden of excess power being produced. We have to start with better energy somewhere, getting away from the way WE do it, regardless of other countries must be a good thing. As battery tech becomes better and more people have EV, we might even see our Cars and Bike become the battery for our homes to take up some of the slack.

electric is better even if electricity is from fossil fuel plants bc modern plants are 3-4x times more efficient than ICE you got inside your car or bike plus ICE pollut more in city traffic and cause local pollution while plants have scrubbing and thus can clean most pollution before it get into atmosphere about renewable being inconsistent, this is kinda an often repeated argument, but with scale, its no longer an issue there more there are renewable plants, and diverse, the more stable the grid and production becomes and new revolutions in grid storage will make those problems a thing of the past

@@zazugee " modern plants are 3-4x times more efficient than ICE you got inside your car" lol erm no no they are not, modern cars are almost 95% efficient at turning fossil fuel into forward motion, where as even the very best fossil fuel burning plant is less than 40% efficient, this is due to the fact there are multiple stages and at everyone there is loss as in fuel to turn water into steam = loss / steam to turn turbines = loss / turbines to turn generators = loss / unusable power to converters = loss / converters to filters to power lines to substations = loss / substations to homes = loss / home outlet to charger to car = loss, so no they are not 3 - 4 times more efficient. As for scrubbing well yes they do but then so do cars, the scrubbing at plants is not 100% as that would be impossible and so 2 things still get pumped out and that is CO2 and H20, this is basically the same as a car as it uses a Catalytic converter that converts exhaust gasses to simply water and carbon dioxide

Owner of a Ninja 400 and a Zero FXS (2018) - I use the FXS at least 90% of the time but when I feel the itch to go for a long cruise I hop on the Ninja. I don't ride expecting drivers to hear me, so don't have an issue with its silence -- however wildlife are unpredictable around electric vehicles. You'll get a lot closer to them before they notice you then dart unpredictably - had a particularly close call with an adolescent or female bighorn sheep. Regarding the topic of the video: petrol bikes still win out vs electric for overall usefulness/range/repairability. I've had to take my FXS into the shop twice whereas the Ninja has been perfect (though spark plugs, air filter, and valve clearance are all due). But as a supplementary bike an electric is awesome and will end up being the one you ride the most.

It has surprised you (and me!) how the reviewed Zero FXS CBT legal bike has a performance (especially torque) easily akin to a 400cc motorcycle. I'd be interested therefore in how insurance companies will categorise such a machine compared to a 125 cc petrol which usually falls between say groups 3--6. The Association of British Insurers classify bikes in up to 22 groups taking essentially into account: List price Price and availability of parts Cost to repair Security (How easy or attractive to steal) and Vehicle performance (eg 0-62 mph) The final premium as ever will depend on post code, age, experience, locked garage, likelihood to be involved in an accident and making a claim to name the main considerations. Leaving cost to one side, might insurance premiums make such machines unaffordable because of performance alone for the next generation of youngsters when ICE is finally banned? Indeed currently only a few insurance companies will deal with electric bikes (and then some only third party) with certain companies quoting 4-5 times the premium compared with ICE machines.

In my experience loud pipes dont make much of a difference unless your pipe is somehow projected more forward(people usually pull out or over causing accidents) so they hear it better as pipes are usually away from people in front and cars have so much sound deadening they can hear anyway. On top of that here in the south trucks are usually louder so it doesnt matter if you bike is loud if there is a truck nearby as that is all anyone hears. In my experience I can tell a HUGE difference by wearing a high viz jacket in how much more often people notice me(have 26k miles on a grom and about 10k miles on other bikes like supermotos/dual sport/adv/sportbikes).

It's hard enough to get car drivers to notice us without silently sneaking up on them with an electric bike. I see a lot more accidents with learners on these bikes due to how quiet and quick they are. The Police will love them as they won't hear them speeding. Is the advert for it....Electric bikes just great for cities like London easy in traffic from £10k comes with free coffin.

Price is still a massive issue with these electric bikes ...... that one you're on there at £10K is about twice as much as I'd be willing to spend on it. There aren't many riders on just a CBT who could justify spending that amount (especially considering it's a bike they'd probably only have for a year or so until gaining a full licence) .. and the riders out there with full licences and £10K to spend will want a lot more than a CBT level bike for their money 🤷‍♂️ .... If Zero's high end bikes were £10K instead of £18 / £20K I'd most likely have bought one already when I was bike shopping this time last year ...

Torque etc I understand will in the near future will get regulated more as electric values drop and performance increases. I can see for electric bikes that current range for the FXS will NOT be CBT legal and could/should be halved for CBT legal. I also need to point something out a CBT license allows upto an 11kw for 17 years+ but according to Zero Motorcycles the FXS has a power rating of 20kw for the 3.6 and 34kw for the 7.2 this makes this motorbike ILLEGAL for use on a CBT www.zeromotorcycles.com/model/zero-fxs

@@spicy110 Explain then how your loaner which you say is 11kw has exactly the same power output as the advertised (Zero Motorcycles UK website) of the 33kw model ie 85mph top speed, mileage range is almost the same etc. I believe you were loaned the 33kw model rather then the 11kw model. For a bike to be 1/3rd the power should not be performing identical. BTW Amped Motorcycles shows this for the FXS 7.2 11kw: Peak power 44 hp (33 kW) @ 4,300 rpm ampedmotorcycles.com/product/zero-fxs-11kw/ Someone is lieing to someone and quite posible false advertising.

@@spicy110 Also another pointer Can I ride electric motorcycles with CBT certificate? If you have a provisional licence and passed CBT (compulsory basic training) certificate. Then, according to current regulations in UK (www.gov.uk/ride-motorcycle-moped/bike-categories-ages-and-licence-requirements) you can ride motorycles with a power output not more than 15 kW. Zero FX and Zero FXS have the smallest power among other electric motorcycles, it is only 27 hp or 20 kW. Therefore, unfortunatelly, currently you are not allowed to ride electric motorcycles with CBT certificate. You have to pass full exam. Although it would be much easier with electric motorcycle, because it is much easier to control electric motorcycle then a petrol one.

  • @GavinColbourne

@@spicy110 I also need to point out something according the the DVLA A1 Light motorcycle up to 11 kW (and a power-to-weight ratio not more than 0.1 kW per kg) and 125 cc CBT, theory test, practical test 17 This means with the FXS no matter what model is 133kg comes in at a power ratio of 13.3kw minimum which is still above the 11kw. However if it was a tricycle then 13.3 would be ok as the maximum is 15kw. BUT we are also dealing with new technology and personally if the manufactor is stating PEAK POWER of 33kw for the FXS 7.2 11kw then it is NOT legal for CBT use (AFTER GOOGLING FXS 7.2 11KW).

  • @spicy110

Electric motorcycle on a CBT are measured by sustained peak power not absolute peak. So they have about 11kw 15bhp sustained unlike a 125cc petrol bike that is peak power. Do you really think they are selling these bikes to people to ride illegally on a national level? This is how these bikes are hugely outperforming their petrol equivalents. Will that change in the future maybe only time will tell.
