    Just the other day I was running aurum vale (blech) and there was a little white mage who was doing his best. We kept wiping at the first boss and he was so disappointed in himself saying "you guys need a better healer, this is too much for me" and we just encouraged him and told him it's alright and didn't give up and finally we did it! It was so wholesome, we were all so proud of our little white mage. That moment just made me so happy to be part of the ffxiv community Billy Thegoblin, I'm proud of you!!

    This literally happened to me the night before last. I’ve been testing out FFXIV on and off and had this level 39 sprout white mage I decided to dust off and take out for a spin. I just like healers, did them a lot in WoW, and hadn’t had too much trouble yet. The next storyline quest I had to do was fight Titan. I’m not sure I want to jump straight into a dungeon for my first experience back after months, but decide to just go for it and jump in group finder. I watch the whole cut scene - nervous that my whole party is going to start without me. They didn’t and were all waiting there patiently. I move forward to show I’m ready and the tank runs in and I throw regen on him and start watching the health bars closely while trying to remember where my spells are hotkeyed. And Titan jumps and I get one-shot insta-killed. I see “WIPE” typed in party-chat and feel a bit of that sick feeling. I apologize in chat. We wipe and I try again. I guess I just didn’t see the AOE, so I’m going to watch for it this time. Titan jumps - I run out of the red circle, and get knocked off the platform to my death. “WIPE.” Now I feel embarrassed and stupid and apologize again. I explain it’s my first time with this fight and ask if maybe I should be following someone else. The tank just types “OK, let’s all take a break and find out what’s killing you.” We figure it out and they explain the mechanics. And I think I’m ready so we go. Round three - I avoid the jump without getting knocked off. I’m watching the bard in the group and following him for reference. I get a rock prison and the bard busts me out. I’m keeping the party ok on health. I dodge a couple of those rock blasts that appear under your feet. The boss is getting low… excited… and I don’t dodge the third rock blast under my feet and get killed a third time. NOOOO! I’m so frustrated and not sure what’s going to happen. I figure even FFXIV players must have limits to their patience. Fortunately, the boss was low enough the party killed it anyway. Then they stuck around and consoled my corpse and told me it was ok. I apologized for them having to put up with that lousy performance. The tank says “it’s ok - just focus on being the best healer you can be!” The. They told me to enjoy my cut scenes and the tank gave me a commendation. And I’m like, oh my gosh - it’s literally not just a meme!

    Dear recent WoW refugees: The most important thing is to not feel rushed all the time - getting rid of this feeling takes forever, and some never succeed because of decades of having that hammered in your brain: "Waste our content as fast as possible, so you can be stuck in the content drought, complain about it, get bored so we have to rope you back in with dumb daily shit" is not a thing here. Rush yourself through everything in a month an you'll be legit done with the game, and you destroyed your own experience. Take your time. Stop to smell the roses on the side of the road every once in a while, aka breed the perfect racing chocobo and waste some time in the golden saucer and stuff like that. Importantly: There is no ONE endgame. Quite a small percentage of FF players are actually raiders. No loot loop that forces you to clear x content every week. Chill. Have fun. And find what makes you happy in this game. I'm an achievement hunter for example, a lot of my friends are roleplayers, housing is also very time consuming, etc. There are a lot of sub-communities to explore. I'm pretty 100% that no one will read this, but for the off chance that this hits someone who just came over to FF: rest assured that you are in a better place now, less greedy, with patience and love for everybody, not just from the community but first and foremost from the developers, and that oozes throughout the entire gameplay as you might have noticed. I have now played FF for 2 years and a little bit. It really has been a journey of adjustment to a none toxic environment (0 shade, just facts). There is no loot lottery here, so no one is just getting randomly lucky with their gear while you farm for months. No need to feel artificially rushed by some billion dollar company into anxiety to be left behind. There are no damage meters, so no one will passive aggressively post it in chat to call out several people, inciting hostility and defensiveness throughout a raid. There are no buffs that you have to constantly apply that drain your money, so every wipe costs you something. If "that one dude" keeps fucking up, it doesn't matter at all. There is nothing to be lost except for time and let's be serious now: we got more then enough of that. So also take said time in every aspect.

    The thing that always stands out in my mind is remembering when I first entered Sastasha. I was a measly little GLD with my mid-Heavensward friend on WHM. At my friend's advice, I admitted to being new, while my WoW side started screaming that that was a mistake and I was going to get blamed for everything. Instead, the MCH in the party just said, "Cool! Welcome to the game! Just make sure to use Flash to grab everything, hit things where you can. We'll let you know if anything comes up you have to handle." There were a couple of bumps as I adjusted to dungeon tanking vs. just having been running around solo until now, including needing to rotate my targeting (back at the tail end of Heavensward, for you Shadowbringers converts, we didn't get our tank stances until 30+, and didn't get an AoE attack until much later for Gladiator/Paladin; my only AoE threat was Flash, which drained my MP) to maintain threat while the DPS killed things, but overall everything went quickly and easily. Nobody complained about me being slow because I was still a low level, fresh tank. Every step of the way, though, I kept worrying I was going to make some critical mistake and then get screamed at. Never happened. I try to pay that sentiment forward when I see a sprout on their first time in a low level dungeon these days. A little over four years later and I don't flinch nearly as often, and the WoW voice has been mostly silenced. I don't think I could ever go back to WoW after experiencing FF.

PotD and HoH are the two I can think of where the higher levels are "harder" difficult, but from what it seems like, dungeon difficulties are set in stone when they are created. If you want one more difficult that's actually a completely different dungeon not an old one tweaked up higher. God the dungeon part was so relatable. I finally finished Shadowbringers and from when I started in ARR to the very tippy end of Shadowbringers, I had maybe 10 total "bad" dungeon/trial/raid groups. And the majority of that was because someone DCed and we had to wait a while. Nothing even remotely as toxic as WoW. I would sometimes have panic attacks going into WoW dungeons because even in NORMALS it was a 50% chance it would end in devolved insult hurling mess and it would absolutely kill my momentum in the game. There's so much dungeon and raid content in WoW I purposefully skipped if I could so I didn't have to group with people. In FFXIV I went out of my way to unlock and finish every dungeon/trial/raid I possibly could.

Especially as a little baby Conjurer, since I enjoy playing healing classes, but we all know the kind of abuse they get in WoW. In WoW, I outright abandoned the main questline of a zone the moment it asked me to do a dungeon, and as a result never get a conclusion to the story, because attempting to queue for that content would never, EVER EVER be worth the grief it'd cause. I'm still unlearning that dread and anxiety when it comes to queuing for a duty in FFXIV, and sometimes I still can't push past it. Even though we may be wasting our time together in FFXIV, at least at the end of a run you have something to show for it, whether it's XP or tomestones or even just progress towards an achievement. At the end of a failed WoW key, you have useless gear and a sense of resentment towards the other players for impeding your key's progress. It's a terrible system that makes everyone feel bad, and as long as it's in place, I don't think that WoW can go back to being a pleasant place to unwind at the end of a work day.

    The WoW community can be so toxic, I remember this guy in my guild : first time I do a M+ with him, we were having trouble getting pasted whatever boss. I was still learning this dungeon and I was so focused on not messing up the mechanics that my DPS was quite low. He was tanking and he spent the whole dungeon reminding me how my dps was bad and how he was toping the dps meter even whithout trying even though he was the tank. He was not swearing, he was so calm but so much passive-agressive. Do a dungeon with him and you would feel like you were the worst person alive. At some point I decided that I would no longer raid or do M+ if he was in the group but we were a small guild so he was pretty much in all of them. I quit WoW not so long after. Edit : btw I think the WoW community is toxic because the game systems are pushing them to be that way. Over the years Blizzard made WoW more and more a competitive game. As a player you have a lot of pressure to perform well, you're always grinding for better gear, you have to invest a lot of time into systems which may or may not be very fun. Whereas FFXIV is more based on player working together, experiencing and enjoying a good story together.

  • @Scruffed

    @Scruffed

    I take your point that WoW has been designed to be more competitive and performance-oriented than FF, but I also think there's a mistake in judging the WoW community or the game itself too harshly based on a bad experience with a guild or a random team in the group finder. The game has several difficulties and the "pressure" to perform well and keep up will naturally depend on the difficulty you're aspiring to clear. If you join a guild that only aspires to clear heroic raids then the time commitment and ability/pressure to perform should be a lot lower than that which you'd find in a guild that aspires to clear Mythic or at least progress several Mythic bosses before the next tier. If you ever find a heroic-oriented guild with a raid leader that's putting tons of pressure on you to change your spec or to fully do all the seasonal grinds (in the current patch it would be Korthia), or yells at people everytime they make a mistake, or has a hugely complex organizational structure, then those are all red flags that there's something wrong with that guild. There are so many guilds that are nothing like that. The same applies for M+ groups (the higher the difficulty of the key, the more will be expected of you in terms of numbers, knowledge of dungeons, etc), and if you're invited into doing a higher key than you think yourself capable of doing, you can either decline or let others know that the run will probaby be a carry.

I probably would have dropped WoW and tried something else before Shadowlands, but I fell for the "They've learned from their mistakes" hype and went into Shadowlands. Then I took a week off to take care of some irl stuff right after having a bad week of WoW and found that I didn't want to log back in afterward. Downloaded FFXIV free trial to try it out and bought the game a week later. Now my friends and I spend our time in Eorzea doing some of the fun things that we used to do in WoW, but with a much better atmosphere and more friends. One of the bigger surprises was when I got into a group for some Realm Reborn extremes and everyone just said to not worry about knowing the fights at first and that they'd explain what went wrong after a wipe; I was also surprised when the group didn't disband afterward and just gave us sprouts time to go unlock the next one and we did that one too. FFXIV is the one game where I honestly did not notice a single instance of toxic behaviour during my first 6 months of playing. Ah yes, the 1-pull chumps who bail if the raid boss doesn't die on a (specifically marked as such on the LFG description) progress boss.

    The very first extreme i did was with the ice lady primal. I didnt even know it was an extreme. We probably wiped like 6-8 times because 80% of the group had sprout icons on their head. But guess what? The remaining guys who knew the mechanics, kept telling us what to do, where we did something wrong and spent their time explaining the mechanics step by step. It was a refreshing feeling. Made me felt like i was back playing lineage 2 with my friends, exploring everything uknown to us and enjoying the process of learning

    I’ve played wow from the second day of launch (couldn’t log in day 1 lol) and it used to be totally normal to wipe like a dozen times in dungeons with pugs occasionally and you’d just pick up and try again. It made killing the final boss feel so amazing. I’m not sure when that changed really?

    I feel like it was around when they added the whole dungeon/group finder thing. You used to have to get on chat to find a group, and then all go to the dungeon in person, but with all that cut out, it felt like everyone become much less social and more impatient.

    Now I'm no WoW veteran or anything, but I remember having such anxiety to even try tanking in WoW that I never even bothered. I had the same kind of feeling in FF14 when i got to the first dungeon as my little sword and boarder, I stood at the entrance to that dungeon for 30 minutes wondering if I should've gone DPS and eventually I worked up the courage to go in. We get in, I let the group know I'm new to the game, I think we wiped once before the boss cause I pulled too much, and it was fine, we cleared the dungeon and everyone gave me commendations. The genuine relief I felt and the satisfaction of having felt like I did a good job and everyone appreciated what I did was incredible. I never would've gotten that from WoW.

    I've never played WoW but I can recall there was only ever one time where I had a dungeon/trial group that was frustrated with us wiping. I was also newer to the game and still getting my bearings as a Healer. But they definitely got frustrated and booted me out. Ever since I've mainly only had pleasant (or quiet) Dungeon/Trial runs. I was even tanking a ShBr dungeon once and caused us to wipe at the last boss like 6-7 times. But my Party was still super patient and helpful.

    Its hard to not be on edge or want to be ready to be like "not my fault that you're dog shit" after years of m+. You didn't speak to each other, you weren't there for fun, and if someone messed up once then it was done. I did higher keys and toxicity is so high. My attitude has shifted dramatically with FF14. Sadly, I still miss WoW and the classes they have, but I know the game I love isn't good and the people developing dont have my interest at heart, but the interest of investor dollars. You can be interested in both. Thank you for helping us refugees. I have lots of growing to do in this game and look forward to getting more help from you.

    Tonight, we wiped 3 times on Alex final raid in duty roulette. Some submitted an abandon vote. It was turned down and we cleared the next run. All through it we we communicating the mechanics as we proged.

    I remember a Ravana extreme fight I was in where everyone except the paladin died and he tried to clemency heal and solo it. Everyone was cheering him on and when he eventually died, we just started over and cleared it. Good times

    I believe there are three main causes for the differences between dungeons in FFXIV and WoW. 1 is Community management. The demeanor, behavior, measures, and attitude of the people in management visible to the community serve as an example to the rest of the community for how to act and treat each other. I don't think I need to go into detail about the exact differences, considering the recent contrasting news headlines for each company. I'll just say the contrast is... stark and people pick up on that. 2. Time crunch. There is often a limit for how long content in wow is viable, and with that comes a stress to get through it before it becomes a dead mechanic/dungeon/etc.. If you are feeling a time crunch, any wasted time goes from being a neutral-to-positive experience straight to a negative one (like being stuck in traffic when you are almost late to work vs a visit to a friend with no hard ETA). Thus anybody who causes wasted time becomes the object of your frustration to make up that lost time. FFXIV so far has kept content pretty viable across the board so there is less stress to get it done by a certain date. 3. The threshold for success. Preventing a wipe (wasting time) is a matter of reaching a certain level performance for each player. There is a margin between the minimum required for success, and the theoretical maximum a pro could achieve with that class. The distance between these two ends is the threshold for success. An example would be a DPS has a theoretical maximum of 30K DPS but at minimum needs to do say 25K DPS during the dungeon to be "pulling his weight". In a too easy dungeon this threshold is so wide that it can be almost solo'd and the content becomes boring. In a too hard dungeon the threshold is so narrow that things like internet ping can cause problems, the percentage that can usually succeed is small, and it often requires many resources to be spent on temporary buffs that create the sense that any loss is super punishing. With the margins so narrow it is hard to tell who didn't meet the threshold, and thus a heated blame game develops. I Think WoW puts too much pressure on winning, whereas FFXIV dungeons try to make dungeons balanced, but importantly not too punishing for failure. Just thought I'd share my two cents.
