As a new painter who has been consuming a ton of painting videos, I have to say that this is far and away the best description that I have seen about zenithal highlighting. Not just how to do it, but why and what it's for. Thank you for this.

I really am thankful you showed not just the Zenithal but also what you did after with base coat etc. many videos describe the usefulness but this was the first that I’m seeing the technique and ball park where you want your model to be after you go to the next steps. Thank you! 🙏🏼

Hi, great video. What I pick up you can almost never go wrong with zenithal highlighting? Do you have a comparison between a miniature painted with Xpress/contrast paint and one done by the NMM method? I am curious what looks different/ better / worse. This is because I am doubting buying Xpress colors or game colors/model air.

Hey! Essentially, there are three options he way I look at it: 1. You paint the model with contrast paints - zenithal is a must. 2. You basecoat the model with your midtone and then both shade and highlight - zenithal is a big help 3. You highlight up from black - obviously, zenithal is not great for that :D Point 3 is the traditional way for when you want to go for a display quality painjob with NMM for example, but you can do that with option 2 as well ( painters like Sergio Calvo use it as well). In general contrast will look worse but it is faster and easier to do. Ideally, you combine both contrast and standard acrylics. They both have their uses and work better together than alone, imho.

Hello! My favorite one these days is vallejo air white. It barely needs any dilution and it is super smooth :)

This should work with black first and then something like leadbelcher right?

Technically, yes, depending on what you want to achieve. You mean you would spray the leadbelcher on top of the back instead of the white, or spray a white zenithal first and then leadbelcher?

It can work but you will have a black without any metallic pigments in the shadows and metallic highlights on top. That's okay if that is what you are going for, but the more standard approach would be to do the white over the black, and then spray leadbelcher on top of that. This way you would have dark metallic shadows and bright metallic highlights. (works for something like the skeleton of an Imperial Knight for example)
