An intimate portrait of one of the early and foremost teachers of Zen Buddhism in the United States. John Daido Loori was the founder and abbot of Zen Mountain Monastery, in Mt Tremper, NY and the founder of the Mountains and Rivers Order. He received dharma transmission from both the Soto and Rinzai Orders. Before becoming a zen monk Loori served in the U.S. Navy, worked for a number of years as a scientist and married twice. Loori authored more than twenty books on the dharma and was a photographer and nature lover all his life. He is survived by three children, two brothers, four grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and his third wife, Rachael Loori Romero who made this visual poem in his memory. He was my first real teacher. I only spent a few hours in his presence, mostly 25 years ago. Each moment, his life is an example to be realized within oneself. His contribution to American Zen is immeasurable. "Life and death are of supreme importance.. do not squander your life." - Dogen
I was never able to meet Daido Roshi but he inspired me to study zen and by listening to his dharma discourses online over the years really makes me feel as though I knew him. In Gassho Roshi.

Very well produced, very lovely
That which animated the old monk's skandha body in life is certainly beyond death. If the old monk saw IT, that's great. That is what a Buddhist is supposed to do! If he didn't see IT, let's hope his merit (punya) is sufficient to keep up the search for that which animates all things, the Buddha-nature.

Where is he, Daido, now? What is his present location? What is he doing now, that great Zen master? One teacher said "Only way to make your karma disappear is to make your consciousness empty." How to make my consciousness empty? Is it already empty or not? If not then when? If you are doing something now, then you have to do it, so JUST DO IT! Don't collect information like an encyclopedia. You are not a walking dictionary! When you don't know what to do, just do what you always do: eat, shit and sleep. Enjoy your life. Entertain yourself. Be creative, but don't burn out yourself. Otherwise you will become a crazy practitioner and lose precious human rebirth for ...e o n s. What a loss, huh? Have a nice day.
