There was a kid who bullied me relentlessly in elementary school. Badly. Some days I didn’t even want to go to school and actively avoided him when I did. Then I moved away and kind of forgot about him. I saw him again in high school. He called my name from across the campus and started running towards me. As soon as I recognized him, all the old dread came rushing back. I started sweating as he got closer and my mouth was dry. I entered flight or fight mode and I made a decision to fight him if he tried any of his old shenanigans. But when he got to me he gave me a hug before I could do anything. Then he turned to his buddy and introduced me, saying “This is one of my best friends from elementary school. Man, we used to hang around and tussle all the time.” I was stunned. What I thought was ill-natured bullying was just him trying to be friendly. We did get on closer turns eventually and when I asked him about elementary school, he told me he didn’t realize I’d taken it so bad and if I’d say something, he would have stopped. So I guess I learned sometimes bullies don’t think they’re bullying, so if you ever feel uncomfortable with someone else’s actions, make sure to let them know you are not okay with it.

i guess the zeke haters were too hard on him. he deserves more friends.
