Nico, you have shown beautiful images of your lovely family. I would like to mention an alternative method of wearing and carrying the M camera, with a large lens, such as this Distagon. The length and weight of the Distagon 1,4/35mm ZM lens can be used to stabilize the camera with the lens pointed downward, while carrying on the strap. The camera’s bottom plate is in contact with one’s body, rather than the back plate. I find this to be quite comfortable. I am using the Zeiss hood, on the lens, and usually have the camera hanging above my left hip, with the strap being worn diagonally, over my right shoulder, in the cross-body style. Thanks for presenting your thoughts on this lens.

Thanks for the video. When I bought my Leica M6 35mm rangefinder, the first lens I purchased for it was a Zeiss 35mm f/1.4 because I loved the images I had obtained from the four Zeiss lenses (21/28/45/90) I used on my Zeiss G1 35mm rangefinder.

It is nice to see beautiful photos of your family! I mean you had captured well the natural lovely mood in between you and your family.

I got the lens myself and barely use it because it’s so big and long, the results are great,but I prefer the Zeiss biogon-c 35/2.8 much smaller/cheaper and fantastic results especially when you shoot f8 /f11 like I do.

Nico, I appreciate your thoughts. I’ve been using the Zeiss 35mm F2.8 for about 6 months and it’s been phenomenal for the price. I then recently purchased this lens and the size is overwhelming initially compared to my Biogon. But at every aperture the the distagon exceeds the Biogon. And portraits especially truly shine when made this lens. There so considerable edge delineation / contrast and detail and sharpness are amazing. I’ve found that subjects seem to “pop” out from the frames somewhat. Also the fast aperture allows me to keep using this lens till late evening compared to the Biogon. Thank you Nico.

Love how you're getting out of your comfort zone! Bigger lens and color film!! I'm even shocked! Good lens and to your shooting style I can see how this lens wouldn't fit the family documenting style of shooting but I'm glad you've pointed out the pros to this lens! Surely is no slouch whatsoever!

i have just shot this on Digital and its amazing. Sharper than the FLE Lux, handles light and flare amazingly

Thanks for the review! I agree; a Summaron 35/2.8 is a very good alternative! One of my favorite lenses on the M2. I prefer to use Zeiss glass on bigger cameras, like the Zeiss ZF Distagon 35/2 on the Nikon F3 or the Zeiss Planar 50/1.4 on the Contax AX..

Thanks Nico. I can think of situations where f1,4 would be welcome, but I can’t recall that I ever needed it. In 1975, I bought my Rolleiflex F 3,5. The F2,8 was too expensive for a half stop and also heavier. Bokeh had yet to be invented, and with 75mm, depth of field was quite narrow at f3,5. For 135, I love Olympus, both film and digital. Small and lightweight. I am sure that after a couple of hours of carrying a camera with this Zeiss f1,4, I would be prepared to sacrifice the superb colours and sharpness.

Does it get in the way of the viewfinder?

Years ago picked up a Voigtlander f1.2 because got a really good deal. At times do regret getting a f1.2 because of the size but at the same time I've shot indoor at f1.2.

Yeah, I could see myself using f/1.4 indoors but nothing f/2 cant do most times.

Got to love the unpretentious approach “I shot family that’s what I do” but isn’t most m glass pretty good if you stop down to f8-f16?

This Zeiss will be perfect on a Leica SL camera.

I love the 50mm Zeiss Sonnar f/1.5 ZM. The size is small like the 50mm Planar.

The 35mm Zeiss Biogon ZM f/2 is my go to 35mm and it is decent but not as crisp and sharp as the 50mm Planar f/2.

F22??? High aperture actually creates more optical diffraction and results in loss of sharpness.....Ansel Adams f64? Do you use f22 on medium format or large?

Nico I love having ⅓ stop clicks on my two Zeiss lenses because by Voigtlander R3M camera only allows me to change shutter speeds in full stop increments. Having the extra degree of control over the aperture allows me the degree of control over exposure than I want/need. So there can be an advantage to those extra clicks, but I respect that you don't care for them.

Yeah, I can see it being useful to some people, but in my use unless all my lenses were like this I would go nuts.

I would love that lens, if my vision were good enough to nail focus wide open. As far as image quality, my favorite is the Sonnar 85/2. Its bulk is a different matter...

Some very nice pictures. Don't apologize for shooting pictures of your family. Beautiful portraits .

That one is nice and small.

This lens seems like it would feel more at home on an SLR, with either the ZF or ZE versions. A little more balance for the size of the lens, easier to focus with closer to wide open, and higher shutter speeds to better utilize the unique look of Zeiss glass.

There is a lot of much smaller, and more affordable options available. I use a M39 Voigtlander Color-Skopar 35 ~ 2.5 with an M-Mount Adapter when using my Leica CL, and still get Excellent Results, with a Super Tiny Lens! $350 Can. Used..

The last thing you want on a Leica camera is a large lens. Let alone a really big 35mm lens. I have a Summaron (f2.8) which has the same aperture range as my Hasselblad and Rolleiflex. So having 2 extra stops with my Leica is NOT necessary. 2.8 is fast enough

The Konica 40mm 1.8 is wonderful for the price - tragically the Konica cameras aren’t as wonderful so it’s better on Fujifilm.

The Zeiss ZM 35mm f/1.4 is a great lens. One is paying to have a high quality lens at f/1.4. It seems a bit pointless to start by noting that one isn’t that interested in shooting at f/1.4, which is the entire purpose of paying for this particular product. If you want to shoot at f/1.4 during the day on a film camera, it is probably also useful to invest in some ND filters to keep the shutter speed down. All of that expense is about getting a high quality image with subject isolation at f/1.4, so a rangefinder CLA is probably also warranted. If you’re not after subject isolation, get a smaller, cheaper lens.

It is pretty long. Leica has the Summilux very contained in size.

I looked at that lens. It's too big. Period. Spending the extra money on the 35 Summilux is worth it. The Summilux is tiny by comparison. And has a focus tab. Buy that Zeiss to adapt it to a Sony A7 or something, but it does not belong on a Leica M body.
