Zecca Righi Funicular Railway. Narrow Gauge Underground and Overground Railway. Genoa Tourism.

Narrow Gauge Underground Funicular Railway. Cab View of the longest of the Genova funiculars having seven stops. At the crossing point, San Nicolo, changes to Overground. From Zecca, down in the city of Genova, the train travels underground to Carbonara and just as the carriages burst into sunlight, you arrive at the crossing point, (half way), of San Nicolo. Three more stops, Madonnetta, Via Preve, San Simone and your at the top of the mountain at Righi. Great Views !
The Genova Funiculars are a great visit for anyone that likes variety for their rail transport days out.
An interesting alternative for something to do in Genova.
Video is the full run of the trip.

Originally it was made up of two sections, with a car change at San Nicola, where now there is doubling with Abt type switches used for crossings between the ascending carriage and the descending carriage. In the Corso Carbonara stop it can be seen how the tunnels were shaped to accommodate the track for doubling the downstream section. The name Righi comes from the famous Swiss Rigi (pronounced the same way), reached by the world's first cog railway.

Dear @Luigi-uj5ml, Thank you again for contributing a knowledgeable and interesting comment on one of WooWooMad videos. I have only ridden two of the Genoa funicular and both are such an interesting trip to experience. If you have not seen it yet, do have a look at my video on the Ascensore Montegalletto Funicular Railway which is a "Transformer" design. That is, it changes into a elevator, (Lift), half way into its journey after being a funicular. If you have not been on this one, it is the one that is a must to be visited. This is an amazing piece of engineering. Thank you again. Very best wishes, WooWooMad.

@@WooWooMad For the AMT (formerly the municipal transport company, now the mobility and transport company) of Genoa, only those of Sant'Anna and for the Righi are "funiculars". All other fixed installations are considered "lifts", including that of Monte Galletto and the inclined lift for Quezzi. The Principe - Granarolo rack, on the other hand, is considered by the Ministry of Transport to be a "railway", although it is similar to a two-cabin funicular (1200 mm gauge, central station with Abt-type switches for crossings, etc.). The only railway signal it is equipped with is the one that protects the Granarolo level crossing on the railway side. A horizontal and vertical elevator similar to that of Monte Galletto is that of the "Villa Scassi", but unfortunately, after spending millions of euros, it is once again stopped due to technical problems. An aerial funicular is in an advanced planning stage between the airport, the Genoa Sestri Ponente station and the Erzelli hill. A classic funicular has been activated after years of standstill in Celle Ligure

@@WooWooMad Yes, I was born and live in Genoa. In the former gas works located in the "Gavette" locality (it was connected to the Genoa Brignole locomotive depot via an interesting non-electrified railway), where there is currently a bus depot, I had noticed one of the two carriages of the old funicular known as Sant'Anna, functioning as a water counterweight. Furthermore, in the entrance of the General Directorate of the AMT (ex UITE), in Via Montaldo 2, one of the motors that operated one of the two winches of the old funicular called del Righi in two sections was kept.

More than a funicular: a real cableway underground, with its stations! Dear Vincenzo Canta, Yes . . . This is a great system that serves the local community well. It is another example of interesting and efficient transport projects that Genova can be proud of. Very interesting ride with a fine view at the top. Thank you for commenting. Very best wishes to you and your channel. WooWooMad. Caro Vincenzo Canta, Sì. . . Questo è un ottimo sistema che serve bene la comunità locale. In the three main funiculars of Naples (Centrale, Chiaia and Montesanto), the concept of cableway underground is even more evident.

What I don't understand is the double catenary with double pantograph. It reminds me of italian pre-war "trefasi" lines.

Dear Max Art, Sorry for the delay in replying, been away. Ah! . . . I see what you you are saying. Let's be honest, I don't understand either! Never noticed that before and I should have !!!!!! I think that we are going to have to rely on someone else coming up with the goods on this one. I have noticed that there is a nice little set of double airborne points/switches in the power cables just as the car comes into the station out of the tunnel. Very clever! Lets see if anyone out there can help us out and send an answer to all this. Thanks for the interesting comment. Very best wishes to you and your channel, WooWooMad.

Can You Tell Me What's Wrong With That Thing What Makes That Funcular Has Seven Stops

  • @WooWooMad

FlashyDucy Dear FlashyDucy, All the stops on this Funicular provide a service to the local community who are living, in effect, on the side of a mountain. The first two stops are actually in the tunnel without a station as the higher vehicle is stationary at the higher platforms. Very Best Wishes, WooWooMad.

This asymmetry derives from the fact that originally there were two funiculars: one from the Mint to San Nicola and the other from San Nicola to Righi, originally called "Castellaccio".

Dear CaptainKrimson, Yes . . . that is a good point. I suppose that it gives the public confidence by showing that there is someone actually in charge of the funicular, especially on the way up the mountain. However, as you suggest, I am sure that there could be a system invented that could be more automated. But that may involve local politics . . . Thank you for the interesting observation. Very best wishes WooWooMad.
