Z Fold 5 vs OnePlus Open: Samsung is in Trouble!
Ғылым және технология
OnePlus Open vs Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5... which one is better? Well, the OnePlus Open has surprised everyone with how good it is, and Samsung and the Z Fold 5 are in some serious trouble! Luckily for Samsung that it has the S Pen because if OnePlus aded a dedicated stylus to the OnePlus Open, I'd probably jump ship!

It's not documented, but the OnePlus open supports a stylus on both the inside screen and the outside cover screen.

I received my OnePlus open, and I am really impressed. The previous OnePlus (8 - 10) devices always felt like they lacked something (camera, wireless charging, boring design). Even though the open doesn't have wireless charging, it has a lot more going for it. I was skeptical buying a folding phone but I'm happy I did.

It is. It's a beast. I wouldn't trade it for any other phone out there right now. The Open has a brighter display, lower cost for the same storage, the outside display is not freakishly narrow, the predictive text for swiping and texting is a lot better as well, also, the hinge on the open has about half the moving parts on its hinge compared to the Z Fold and the Pixel Fold, etc.

@@powgee22 , cheap brand. If I were you I would look up the difference between cheap and inexpensive and then use the right word. One Plus is not a cheap brand. It does tend to be inexpensive. if you're saying it's cheap because it has midrange phones that are inexpensive, like the Nord, then I guess by that logic, so does Samsung and most other phone makers. Which would mean they are cheap as well. The One Plus open uses one of the best processors that there is right now the 8 Gen 2. It has 16, not 12 GB of RAM. It has 2,800 nits at peak brightness, much higher than Apple's, Samsung's or Google's phones. It also costs hundreds less for the same storage of 512 GB. I have the phone and have had it for a couple of days. There is nothing cheap about it. It is definitely a high end premium feeling phone. The Z Fold 5 is way too narrow and almost unusable. The crease in the Z Fold 5 and the Pixel Fold is right there in your face, whereas the crease in the OnePlus Open is barely noticeable. I have played around with the other two and they are not nearly as nice as the Oneplus Open. Just something to think about before you pass judgement on the Open.

The Open looks good. I think they are going to force Samsung to step up their game. I think one other thing that will give Samsung an advantage that I didn't hear you say anything about is trade in deals. Samsung always has deals so that $100 price difference is negligible to meaningless.

Since all reviewers do not have the ability to assess long term durability or software update reliability we only get a 50% of a review comparison. Hey. I got a problem I hope you can help me with. I bought a 7a for my mom and me and dad have the 6a and 7. We all got android 14 when it first came out. Me and dad updated ours but mom never updated hers. Soo the other day I was out with my mom and I was like give me ur phone and I'll update to 14. Well when I went to her update the 14 update was nowhere to be found. It said android 13 and when I click to update it says it's up to date even when I keep on hitting the update. So the 14 update that was on her phone has went away. Should I just wait or what. I can put beta 14 on there and then not update that and hópefully it will automatically go to stable after 3 months or whatever. Her security is September as well so I dunno what's going on. I just got my Z Fold 5 but I would consider the OnePlus open if it had a 1tb option and stylus support. My candy bar phone is the Xperia 1 V which I believe I can get more natural pics with than my Z Fold but I am able to multitask better with the Z Fold. I'm wondering if the OnePlus Open will be optimized for multitasking as well as the Z Fold. I heard the screen can't change aspect ratio like the Z Fold. That's a great feature when multitasking.

I understood that the ONE+ open also has Active Stylus support. Then the choice is no longer difficult for me. I now have a Surface Duo 2 and because of the screen ratio, I never made the step samsung fold 5. the ONE+ open is already a bit closer and is much more interesting as an alternative to replace my Surface Duo 2.
I still love my Fold 5 but man, with each passing day and video I watch, I'm slowly waning in my desire to hang on. OneUI and Dex are probably the two things... This phone is incredible. No real drawbacks. So I'm going to nit pick. - No Wireless charging is not a real negative because fast charging and the 4800mah battery are more than worth the trade. - No Snap dragon 8 g3. We always want the latest and greatest especially in a $1700.00 flagship that will be kept for 3-4 years. I would have wanted the gen3 chip being that it is tangibly faster with similar to better efficiency vs the gen2 and the gen3 chip is launching soon in other flagship devices. However gen 2 is no slouch in efficiency or performance - Camera Bump. While beautiful, its large and it's protrusion is a tad annoying, especially when you sit or lay it down. The stock case helps just a tad, but I'm most concerned about scratches and impacts damaging the lens or lens bezel. Everything else is top tier no complaints. I'm loving and enjoying mine more everyday.

Excellent video. Samsung will either have to redesign their Folds or make a Fold Ultra version to keep up with the competition.
MKBHD mentioned that his phone already has screen damage, and it's as simple as folding and unfolding it. Some testers I watched on KZread said that the hinge of the OnePlus isn't as premium as the Fold 5. They found that testing, opening, and folding both devices yielded similar results, for example, the 180-degree angle, but the OnePlus didn't seem as sturdy.
...umm...WE DO REMEMBER THAT THE PURPOSE OF THE OUTSIDE SCREEN ISN'T TO GIVE YOU A BIG SCREEN. IT DOES WHAT IT'S SUPPOSE TO AND WHEN YOU REALLY NEED TO MULTI-TASK AND ALL THAT JAZZ, YOU OPEN TO THE BIGGER SCREEN 🤦🤦♀️Who will buy a folding phone that they don't need to open? 🤔🤔🤔 just saying
Bro can't even compare the crease on this to the pixel fold. The pixel crease is WAY worse. I literally can barely feel it on the open even when I try to find it. I've yet to even notice the crease on even a white background. It's a way better experience all the way around on this phone. I got the black one and it's sweeeet
The camera hardware is superior on the 1+, but the results are not showing that superior advantage except for the zoom and interior camera.
Oppo Find N2 pen can be used for the OnePlus Open or Oppo Find N3 and it can be used for external and internal screen as well as other Bluetooth function. Maybe you can review this and try this in an update and review
I saw that the stylus pen from Oppo works flawlessly with it. Both screens support it. If you can import one, then you'll have a strong comparison going.
With launch day update it adds stylus support from what other users have said
I guess Steve Balmer was right about pens and Steve Jobs was wrong.😂
Pssssss... Oppo find n2 (the previous generation) had a Bluetooth pen. If you import it, it works on this phone! And on both screens!!! Major L to Samsung, ngl.
I hope they add a TPU case for the Open that hides that camera bump. Its pretty massive....otherwise its the one to beat!
Really loving the Oneplus open. It is hands down the best foldable I've ever owned. Only thing that I do not like is the OnePlus website/Application and their customer service. It did not let me apply the $50 coupon when checking out and now my Account has nothing under my orders tab. Even the original receipt I received through email is blank whenever I go to it. Based on the research I did online this is a very common thing for people that have traded in devices. Sent out my trade in device to them today. A bit shady that they are not allowing me to see my original receipt or is is just a glitch in their system. I'd be curious to know if this has happened to anyone else. But the device itself is a home run for sure. Form factor, software are superb. Hopefully some of the bigger case manufacturers will start making cases for the open soon.
It feels like a lot of people are saying that "Samsung is resting on their laurels" and although some of that may be true, there is more to product management and product delivery when it comes to such a big company with many different products. Samsung practically did nothing new ever since the Note came out in 2014 for a long time. They just refined their flagship "bar" phones a little bit each year. However, behind the scenes, they were working on their flexible OLED display to eventually come out with the Flip and the Fold. Samsung also pioneers displays for many, many other phones and devices as well. So yeah, it may seem like nothing is happening on the surface but they still dedicate time and resources into innovating something new. It could be that there is not much they can really do with their current Flip and Fold aside from making small changes here and there to stay on top of the competition, or they can use that resource to create something completely new again in 4-5 years.
I have now both z fold 5 and oneplus open lol. I just dont get why samsung is in trouble when they have more features than oneplus open. The only advantages that open have is it has a bigger screen and bigger battery. I bet if samsung has the same screen as the open then people would get samsung. Lets see how durable, compatible and reliable open is before we say samsung is in trouble lol.

I'm a big fan of my Fold 4's form factor. Closed is great for one-handed use. Open is great for 2-handed use. The only thing I would want it wider when closed for, is if my inner screen fails - because if I've got two hands free to use my phone I'm gonna open it, and if i don't have two hands free then I want to be able to reach the left side with my thumb. Also the S Pen is nice to have. Also I'm not made of money, so I'd be in trouble if I decided I wasn't happy with my current phone every time something new came out.

@durianepicurean6382 I mean, can I technically reach the left side of a bigger phone with my thumb? Yeah. It's just not as comfortable to. If I do hand gymnastics I can reach the left side while open with one hand - I just would prefer not to do hand gymnastics. And the _comfortable_ reach of my thumb is a hair further than the closed width of the Z Fold.

I hope Samsung don't change the form factor. I like how easy the phone is to use single handed when closed, and if i needed a bigger screen i just simply open it. Then people will just complain that they rarely open the phone and that the company should've just produced a normal/compact phone.

Oneplus open is just as easy to hold one handed.
I actually just purchased and am using /learning the Honor Magic v2. I like the Oppo, of the two (fold and open), and I've been a samsung loyalist since the Note1. I can't neglect the over seas devices, simply because they're better(even the software). Thinner, more polished, more up to date, cheaper, bigger and more advanced battery tech, and they actually work. I'm speaking mostly regarding my v2, but the majority of the Chinese devices have these advantages. Yes, a few work arounds, but even my folds, I had to do work arounds. And the form factor is simply much better than the folds. And you can get them, in a couple days! Even with the small annoyances(and the support is just as bad as with samsung, if you have a mechanical problem in my experience), it's going to be hard to consider another samsung device. It took me this long, to move from the ecosystem, and now that I have, I will probably keep moving..
Id like to think i inspired the idea for this video by my question on the live stream the other night lol. That may not be the case, but thats what im telling myself
Too soon to say. I would like to wait few more month to see durable, battery life, software update, speed test, drop test... in real life, not just on many YT "talk show" channels in the last couple day.
The Open looks like the best foldable I've seen yet. The only real gripes I would have is the fact that they released it late in the year with Android 13. If they had waited a few weeks and released it with Android 14 you could make the most of it's four years of OS updates. In addition, a slight delay in its release could have afforded them the time to give the device the Gen 3 chipset. This used to be the same strategy when they offered the T variance later in the year. On the other hand, have they done that it would have probably coincided too closely with the release of the 12. Still, if I were interested in a folding device this would be my choice.
Samsung is not in trouble 😂... people buy their phones also for the software what it runs on it and Samsung One UI for me is unbeatable. I like android and I wanted to try so many times different brands, but when I checked them in real life..just felt like way behind what samsung offers. People could also change from Apple if they only would look for the form factor as all phones look the same (exept foldables) but they still stick with IOS.
I think OnePlus avoiding being carrier subsidized is a great mistake. If they want to become mainstream, they have to appeal to all financial sectors. I've been with OnePlus since the 6T, and still to this day when I show someone my phone they asked me who makes that phone? No one in America knows oneplus

Im definitely getting the Oneplus Open once the price drops under $1,000
Honestly OnePlus has done everything great on this phone. I can choose it everyday. May they include stylus pen 🖊️🖋️

I wish they did.
Oneplus open can get down to $1200 before any trade-in deals, it could be quite tempting for some of us who are just watching and waiting
On the contrary, samsung fold 5 sells cheaper by about $600 where I live. That itself is a no brainer to get the fold 5. Also thanks to Samsung's solid trade in programme.
I have a pixel fold and honestly love it. It fits better in my pocket and my hand when closed than a longer phone like a zfold. Not sure why u feel it's a red headed step child.
I would get the Z Fold 5 over the One Plus Open, simply so i can trade in the 5 for the Z Fold 6.

I see what you mean. You will basically get to use a Z Fold 5 for very little money in the mean time because nearly all of the cost will go towards the Z Fold 6 with the trade in. And most likely the Z Fold 6 will be similar aspect ratio as the Oneplus Open.

@@jasonculver3516 Well yeah because I know Samsung isn't gonna offer much for a Oneplus phone and I have more brand trust in Samsung.
Samsung pretty much had a monopoly in the usa in terms of the fold market for 4 years and just got lazy, until finally now the Google fold and now oneplus.
Mine arrives on Friday 🎉
I would be afraid of scratching the lens cover on the One Plus
The fact that Oppo/bbk electronics perfected it in China first with the n fold for 2 years before launching the third generation worldwide was a fantastic way to go

Although, it is also true that Oppo and oneplus did a legitimate collaboration for the N3 and the open which is actually the same device.

The first Find N was already better than the Z Fold

@@dr.fitprofessor4363what? OnePlus is a sub brand of Oppo. Oppo is the only company involved here and the Find N3 is identical.

@@ChrisJohannsen actually, they are not a sub-brand of oppo. In fact, oppo, oneplus, vevo and realme are all under the same corporate umbrella and are sister brands. All four brands function independently of each other but, occasionally they collaborate when it's appropriate.

Absolutely
OnePlus Open does support pen, so basically Oppo Find N3 which is same as OnePlus Open but for the Chinese market has a pen which works with OnePlus Open.

It does support a stylus
One big difference over here in Europe: the Oneplus Open sells for about $300.- MORE than the 512GB Samsung Galaxy Fold 5, and thus unfortunately won't pose any real threat to Samsung sales here...
OnePlus open definitely looks much better, even though I am ready yet to jump on foldable phone wagon yet, looking forward to Oneplus 12 release.
The Open has stylus support. Just no case for it.

It doesn’t have official stylus support. Someone just discovered that the Oppo stylus sold in china happens to work with it.
Rip Samsung. If they don’t extend the front next year. They’re going downhill
Having a good stylus is paramount for those who edit anything on their phone.
If I'm correct the OnePlus open supports a stylus. But you would most likely have to order it from China.
Even with your comparison. I still overall see the fold 5 as a better buy overall. You get more for your money hardware are software wise.
Not sure why people value wireless charging. How is it helpful if it charges your device awfully slow?
Hopefully this forces Samsungs hand to make significant upgrades to the fold 6.

I think it will. I hope so anyway
Samsung is in double trouble with BBK Electronics because the OnePlus Open and the Oppo Find N3 are basically the same exact phone where OnePlus is the sister smartphone company to the Oppo company.
OnePlus did come out swinging and they've nail it. Using lighter material to make the phone body did made the phone lighter and that is necessary and beneficial for consumers hands. The almost invisible crease is very impressive seeing it from my position. 😎💯💯💪🏾👍🏾
First time since the one plus 1 I actually want a oneplus phone. But I just drop a but load of money on the fold 5
Oh wait I forgot you had a Z-fold
