YZ Fenders on a Yamaha XT225 ? Mod with Polisport Fenders

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Can you put YZ fenders on a Yamaha XT225 to upgrade the appearance? I gave it a go on my 2006 XT225 using blue 2009 YZ front and rear fenders, with mixed results. Spoiler alert: the front fender worked with some adapting but the rear fender ended up being more work than I was willing to tackle right now, and I explain why.

My videos also consider the perspective of short motorcycle riders (when it’s helpful and relevant) in choosing and modifying bikes and equipment.
I’ve been hooked on motorcycles since 1975 when, at the age of 11, my dad brought home a shiny new Suzuki TM75 for me and a Suzuki TC185 for himself so that we could trail ride together in the hills of West Virginia. Since then I’ve worked as a mechanic, owned countless bikes, and even worked in the motorcycle industry for a number of years as a photographer and journalist. Now I do mainly video production and enjoy nothing more than making and sharing these motorcycle videos on KZread.

Front fender looks good. I have read that the rear fender has to be notched around the frame, so no surprises there. You should power the LED off a battery and see how bright it is. The tail light I bought is much brighter than the stock XT light and even with the smaller surface area would be more noticeable. You just need someone 100’ behind you to see it, Lumens matter, not size.

The logic side of my brain knows you're 100% right about the lumens. I'm considering ditching the luggage rack for something else at some point so I might revisit the whole back of the motorcycle then.

Great video. This is a mod I have been wanting to do. After seeing your video, and the troubleshooting you went through, I think I’ll hold off on doing this for a while. I installed an aftermarket oil cooler that mounts on the frame downtube so I’ll have even more complications getting front fender clearance around the oil cooler. Even though I won’t be doing this, your video saved me from some headaches. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, I'm glad it was a help! I probably could have made this a two-minute video and just said "get four longer bolts with half-inch spacers" and that would have been sufficient, but I figured the whole journey might be informative for others. I'm interested in your oil cooler, too...what do you think of it?

I installed the TW200 oil cooler that can be purchased from mekdad1 on eBay. The TW200 is such a close sibling to the XT225 that many parts are interchangeable. This oil cooler is an exact fit with no special modifications required to the XT225. I don’t have any data on the cooling efficiency it is providing. I’m sure there is some cooling benefit but I can’t quantify the benefit. I ride in Phoenix where summer temperatures are extreme so I like to add any cooling options I can. I also added an aftermarket exhaust hoping the free flowing exhaust will more efficiently evacuate heat. Once again, no idea how much that helps but I think there is benefit.

@@dustydualsport4366 thanks, that looks like a really clean, durable, well-positioned oil cooler setup and it makes perfect sense for Phoenix. Even without data it makes sense that the extra oil capacity alone should be a benefit. Same for the exhaust. I've heard that wrapping an exhaust raises the exhaust temperature but really aids in evacuating the heat from the engine, though I've never done it. Thanks again for the tip on the oil cooler...I like your approach to sensible mods!

G'day mate from Australia again loved you clip and will be doing the same front fender on my xt225 but for the rear fender I'm using a ttr250 it fits with little modification and looks better still has big brake light , keep up the good work can't wait to watch more thank you .

G’day! The TTR rear fender sounds like a good way to go, I’d love to see a photo if you get a chance. The YZ rear fender sounded good in theory but I just couldn’t believe how far it stuck out the back..the YZ has very different dimensions. With the Polisport tail light and license plate holder it stuck out a good 6-8 inches further and it looked vulnerable in case of a crash or loop out. The brake light is integrated into the TTR fender, isn’t it? That sounds like the way to go!

You could also trim down the front fender and make it like a super motard. Free mod. Just dont go too short.

Hot air gun on the fender and a piece of pipe to mould the channel you need for the wiring loom. 👍🏻sorted

I enjoyed your video, very well done! On my own XT225, I have been striving to make a lightweight dirt bike that is both capable in low speed off road situations as well as being small enough for buddies and introducing new riders to the real dual-sport experience. I do wish to dump the big tail light and wondered if you feel the us rear fender would allow a decent match to the rear frame, width wise particularly? I’ve got mine working where I can do small jumps an use it for even spirited dirt road rides. The hearing is amazing.

Hey, Cogent Dynamics, I think I need to contact you about some suspension help! That's my next hurdle to clear and I'm a big fan of your work. I'm not sure what you were asking about the "us rear fender" but can share this much - I did try to fit the YZ rear fender since this video, which was a fail, but I'll post that attempt in the future since it could be educational. I did pick up a UFO universal rear fender recently that will hopefully do the trick and work well with the Polisport LED tail light, so that will be coming soon.

Just installed fender, still need to trim it also a guy on KZread installed a yz450 rear fender on back with a Drz400 tail tidy looks good . I’m going to upgrade my springs to the stiffest ones procycle offers,do you think the travel with be sufficient. I didn’t want to do the spring mode that you did I’m 6’ and about 220 so I think I need more stiffer springs any suggestions.

hey man does your front headlight cover fender kinda thing have any bolts on it? mine didn’t when i bought it off of the guy and i just crashed mine doing some stuff in the dirt and the headlight cover fender thing flew right off and now whenever i put it back on it doesn’t stay like it did before. i could t find any bolts bolted into it or anything so i’m kinda confused maybe you could somehow help me figure it out. thank you

Hey, Jonathan, the headlight cover attaches at three points: one screw at the very bottom and two press tabs higher up on the back, one on each side. So definitely make sure that the screw is in place, check to make sure that the tabs are there, and also the rubber grommets that fit in the tabs. If the grommets are missing then the cover will not fit snugly. I hope this helps!

@@tomforward990 Right on! Eventually one will turn up. I was casually looking and then this one appeared nearby with 5400 miles. Of the XT225s for sale that I've seen, about half of them are low mileage and in great shape. Here's hoping you find one soon!
