Yuval Noah Harari Speaks to Young Readers & Teachers About 'Unstoppable Us' | Aprendemos Juntos

In this long-form discussion with an audience of young readers and educators, historian and author Yuval Noah Harari explores the stories that have built and united humankind over tens of thousands of years.
Drawing from the words and illustrations in his new children’s book, ‘Unstoppable Us: How Humans Took Over the World’, Harari decodes the big stories of today (nations, money, gender roles, religion) to empower young readers to question our shared history and change the future.

    I do and it showed me that we all hate each other and we think how bad we are and we dont live by love, hope and faith. Also insted of helping and work with one another we compete and extinct one another exactly like in the story crazy yuval told at the beginning of his talk. We became a real humans only after we returned to God way of living. And I am talking Catholic way of thinking about God and human and the world. Since this is the only way which teach as compassion, love of others and hope through the love of God insted if force and killings and viewing others as a lower class or even as animals. There is just two forces in the world good and bad which are represented by God and by evil. Same as a night and day ect. World is based on opposites because we got a free will to choose. If we were only given a “good” way and “good” especially in today human view could be very questionable we would live oppressed and miserable prison like life. This man has an obsession and he thinks he can fix the world so we can say he thinks about himself as a god but there were many like him before and it always ended very bad for the world when another human being is trying to “fix” the world.

The book that we're told since childhood to follow is typically the Christian Holy Bible. We're typically all shipped off to churches every week to learn lessons about it. How would you feel if someone told you that the real lessons are in the Holy Bible and that all truth, love, and wisdom is with Jesus Christ? It's being told to people every single day, probably thousands of times per day, by people who claim to be certain that this is truth. Often they threaten that you'll find out in the afterlife if you refuse to believe them now. Do these people know?

    Dear Sir Youval Noah Harari ... I find you so interesting to listen to. I recently heard you comment on another talk show about the Ten Commandments and the term slave. I thought you may find it interesting to know that at that time in history there was not a word for employee. That was a time there was no grocery stores or hospitals or police or emergency aid. There were competent me who cared for women and children for food and shelter. The world was in it's infancy in developing. A man may have to be responsible to care for his wife and other wives and children and even his employees/slaves. You are a very wise man Youval Noah Harari but you don't seem to understand these stories very well. You are smart and reason out things if you lived in that time how you would think and feel but this is a different time and people did not think like we do now. The stories you speak of are incredible believable and are worth searching into and meditating on carefully and deeply to really understand what you are actually beholding.

  • @rolodexter
    @rolodexter8 ай бұрын

    I agree with Yuval Noah Harari that the ability to admit that you don't know something takes honesty and courage. It is often easier to pretend that you know something, even if you don't, but this can prevent you from learning new things. When you admit that you don't know something, it opens you up to the possibility of learning something new. It also shows that you are humble and willing to admit your limitations. This can be a very attractive quality in a person, and it can help you to build relationships with others. Of course, there are times when it is not appropriate to admit that you don't know something. For example, if you are in a job interview and you are asked a question that you don't know the answer to, you may not want to admit that you don't know. In this case, it may be better to try to bluff your way through the question or to ask for clarification.

    I always enjoy Noah Harari's work. He has influenced me a lot and was one of the drivers for me towards university studies. But in recent years, I have a principal point of criticism in his approach: He often reduces human issues very easily by calling them "stories". He then proceeds to distinguish between "good" and "bad" stories, which is something that is ultimately subjective. This is simmilar to what many people are doing: they are deconstructing ideas, and by that, crowning themselves as kings of the ashes. I don't think Noah Harari is as extreme as those people, but I think the way he presents his views, is prone to be misused by the masses, and these include very strong, influential and intelligent people with good intentions. I am not speaking against his intentions, but I think that a degree of humility is often missing in Noah Harari's underlying message.

    You really need to go back and read again. Harari clearly tells us, there is no such thing as good and bad. His point about stories, is how powerful they are in our lives and in fact, often overpower truth

    00:56 💡 Early interest in history and big questions Harari became fascinated with history and big questions about suffering, death, and myths from a young age. He aimed to understand where suffering comes from and make sense of the stories people tell. 04:28 📚 Studying myths and stories throughout history Harari studied history to understand the origins of myths, stories, and religions that people believe. He traced how narratives are created and passed down over generations. 10:22 🧟‍♂ Many other human species existence Contrary to modern times with just one human species, Harari explains there used to be many other human species like Neanderthals and Homo floresiensis. Over time Homo sapiens outcompeted and drove them to extinction. 17:02 🖐 First known human selfies Around 40,000 years ago humans made some of the earliest known self-portraits by outlining their hands on cave walls, possibly for self-expression. 26:51 🧠 AI's alien intelligence unlike any prior invention AI represents an unprecedented invention, with the ability to make independent decisions unlike any previous tools made by humans. Its intelligence is alien and incomprehensible. 36:17 🤖 Promise and peril of AI technology AI holds promise to help humanity but also peril if its decisions and goals become misaligned with human values. We must make wise choices about its development now. 49:19 🌱 Three big challenges ahead: ecological, AI, conflict Harari lays out the three big challenges facing humanity: ecological destruction, uncontrolled AI, and conflict between groups. 53:20 🧠 Moving beyond imagined superiority Harari argues we must move beyond stories of imagined superiority over other groups, which prevent cooperation on shared threats. 59:43 ⏳ Lifelong learning is crucial now With rapid changes underway, lifelong learning and flexibility will be essential to keep adapting and reinventing ourselves. 1:04:23 🌎 We shaped our societies, we can reshape them Since humans constructed modern institutions and narratives, we have the power to reshape societies when existing structures cause problems.

    The evolution and globalized cooperation of human beings is due to writing and knowledge passed from generation to generation through these records. Today, man is born with access to mathematical formulas, physics, etc., all explained with access to cutting-edge technologies, accelerating this evolution. In short: Man is a being who has imbalanced nature to the detriment of other species.

    It is truly concerning that there are so many people commenting about this being inspirational. He literally said “human beings can be hacked”. He is ready to give a complete new world order. It is painful to see that he is targeting children to think that we have no consciousness or souls! : looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:2

    Absolutely phenomenal! I just love that Yuval wrote this book for principally young children, preteens. Their lives will be most affected by the 3 threats to humanity that he described, but also they have the most power to change those threats (because they don't know the "limiting stories" that adults have already inculcated). Bravo! He is a superlative thinker, and communicator.

    Part of the point is that there actually are not many differences between humans and animals. Humans do have a superpower though: telling stories. It allowed us to survive and possibly defeat myriad other species of humans that once lived. These other humans were also quite smart and could use tools and create art too. It's sad that they are extinct.

    The stories humans tell usually relate to keeping the world flowing and procreating more humans. Girls were told not to go to school because at the time they were desperately needed at home. As it became possible and easy for children to thrive with less input from the women through healthcare and modern tech the story changed.
