Yuval Noah Harari on GOP losses, conspiracies, AI, religion & history: Melber 'Summit Series'

Why is the 'New Right' turning on conservative traditions? Why are conspiracy theories so potent? Why don't humans use wealth and technology in ways that benefit humanity? Renowned historian and 'Sapiens' author Yuval Noah Harari tackles those questions in an extended discussion with MSNBC’s Ari Melber, who asks Harari about his scholarship, its applications, recent AI developments and criticism of Harari's writing. The discussion also covers how history is written and interpreted, storytelling and 'fictions' as a force in society, including 'money' as a fiction; the implications of evolution and Neanderthal DNA; the existence and meaning of God; the enduring impact of America's 'founding fathers'; and Harari's views of his own intellectual reach, success and its perils.

Its hilarious seein a clueless boomer discover long form interviews for the first time in december 2023 and from a pretty mediocre interview in MSNBC of all places. He's viewing history through a post-modernist perspective, and initially he was fellating himself, lol. Most of this has been discussed in the 1960's. "Fictions" are just descriptions of "grand narratives" and his examples of "competing truths" is well integrated into modern academia. His analysis seems to originate from Foucault. He has the bald head and glasses, too, lol. Even Ari has to call social structures what they are "social constructs". This isn't to crap on post-modernism, it definitely has a place for analysis, however I don't like the idea that it's an original thought and would prefer he use the proper context and vocabulary while discussing the subject. It makes it come off as disingenuous and plagiarized. At halfway, and he's describing "Post-Modern dialectics" which was borrowed from Marx's "dialectic and historical materialism" by Foucault. The only real value from the interview, which lasted less than a few seconds, came from a description of progress as defined by the French Revolution. Particularly around the idea of "liberals" vs "conservatives", where liberals BECOME conservatives as society advances on social issues and the previous conservatives become reactionaries and try to radically change society back to a previous period and culminates into conspiracy theories and capitalization on culturally engrained narratives. It's a major element of fascism. Likewise, the inability for liberals, now conservatives, are unable to protect the new conservatism because they don't want change, they want to conserve. So, a new left forms calling for change, so the center can't hold without massive reforms. The best part of the interview wasn't even engaged in.

Over the past 8 years, "narrative" is pretty well established in American political discourse. He himself being every inch the virtuous Christian Imperialist despite being a Trade Union shop Steward and Labour :Party Convenor. He was of the WW1 generation but got a desk job in Paris, Royal Navy. Lucky *******.. So who changed the rules? How come Anthropology is being studied at Sussex (liberal institution to end them all permanently critical,. anti-establishment) Me engineer 1981 to 1984 Nat. Geog. Anthropology is the study of the origin and development of human societies and cultures. Culture is the learned behavior of people, including their languages, belief systems, social structures, institutions, and material goods.

Fantastic conversation, thank you. Melber is an exemplary host, challenging some things but in a way that opens conversation rather than shutting it down.

Grown up? He can't make up his mind what he believes. Make a decision, then we can talk. Besides he is saying that priests believe their lies. Even if they do. It's still a lie and the people who believe lies as truth should never be taken seriously . What matters is facts. The truth is made of facts. Lies have alternative facts.

The most invaluable insight that I gained by reading Sapiens is that our species not only survived but thrived as a result of our ability to conceptualize, to make abstract concepts snd values real. We actually need and create mythology for our identity. Humans are meaning-making beings. We have a psychological need for a sense of purpose. We give everything all the meaning it has to us. Which means that reality is essentially malleable and based on psychic projection. With such great intelligence , the human being is the greatest of creatures, because our capacity for consciousness. We are also the grossest of animals because of our capacity for consciousness.

This is an amazing book and I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to experience Yuval Noah Harari and Ari Melber sharing thoughts, ideas, and even philosophies with each other. I felt some conflicts within as I read this book - and that is a good thing. Paradigms are built to be shifted from time to time! At essence this book opened a worldview to me in a way that was easy to comprehend even as it dealt with the complexity of our history/changes throughout eons. Ari, thank you for bringing us this interview, and Yuval, thank you for your skill at storytelling - one that makes sense, pushes buttons, and generates much food for thought.
