    Simply a world-class performance - and interpretation. Chopin used a soft-toned Pleyel piano, gave few public concerts, preferred the intimacy of a 'salon' performance. Yuja gives us all of this tenderness - encased in the occasional showering sparkling jewels of a concert performance. She re-creates the music from the inside - out to us. Never misses the inner conversations. That's what makes her special. Far from trying to turn this piece into a Rachmaninov-like piano showcase, she always pulls back, inside the music, with the technically difficult decorations just trickling off her fingers. Amazing! And an equally tender, careful, and listening counterpart from Michael TLC (!) and the SFS

    Chopin was well known for his clear, transparent and unpretentious piano playing. He hated mannerisms or romanticisms....Yuja Wang does the same! No jumping up and down on the piano bench and making silly grimaces like so many other pianists do, simply perfect piano playing with good taste! 👏👏👏

    It's also refreshing to have Tilson Thomas's unpretentious conducting further to the exaggerated nonsense that one sees here on YT from the likes of Wit with Kissen, and Casadesus with Buniatishvili. Despite the sometimes intense emotional quality of Chopin's music, it's orchestration doesn't necessitate that it be conducted like a Wagner opera, while their gestures are for the most part - sorry to say - bullshit ones that merely testify to Norman Lebrecht's view that conducting is, in many respects, a fraudulent profession. While MTT might not achieve the kind of intensities further to his slower tempo's that make one want to march on the current White House administration (one that is hopefully ended after next Tuesday!), this performance is a great lesson in performance objectivity, even if I have to say that I'm not a great admirer of Wang, despite her technical expertise. In my view, these combined passional and objective aspects are best heard here on YT in those excellent RCA performances of both concertos by Rubinstein.

    I love how Yuja’s comments have changed over the years (thankfully overall less critical). It’s quite fun to be on this journey watching her playing evolve. Whether you’re on board or not she’s still one of the best on the planet and her interpretations have tremendous value and to me much joy.

    Interesting...yes, in the past some of her comments have been a little snarky...even when describing her parents. But there's no denying the mastery of her instrument. However, she has basically said that she didn't practice nor add to her repertoire during COVID isolation...which was surprising to me.

    @@jbbevan I think A L was referring to the critical comments she was getting on KZread all those first years ago, James. A combination of KZread tightening the rules against trolls and haters, along with her lasting as a significant artist till today (no flash in the pan) has muted many of them. Her trolls still exist, but more still against her dress rather than against her musical performance. Not sure where you get the 'snarky' toward her parents from; she has lived apart from them now for 21 years, and her lifestyle is most definitely not theirs. But I have never seen anything to indicate anything but respect on both sides. And, having played the piano since she was 6, no one should be surprised she took a bit of a break. As in the notorious case of Horowitz, it can make you a better pianist (and potentially a better personality) in the end.

  • @jbbevan

    @jbbevan

    @@bloodgrss The "snarky" comment came from an interview she did when the Blue Hour album with Andreas Ottensamer came out. In that interview she basically said, "My parents don't have a clue what I do..." Her mother was a dancer and her father a percussionist...so it's not exactly like Bernstein whose father owned a hardware store...so I thought her comment was at the very least unkind since they would be more "clued in" than most parents of gifted children. As to her dress, it neither impresses nor depresses me...that's her choice...with a body as diminutive as hers she can wear whatever she wants. She's not exactly Gina Bachauer. Artistically, I really have no complaints whatsoever. She said in one interview that her "best musical experience" was working with Claudio Abbado...impressive comment. I'm glad she does chamber music and/or sonatas, also. Just haven't seen much of her lately...

    @@jbbevan I agree with most of what you say. Her parents allowed her to come to Canada at 14, and she has been 'out of the house' since. She has stated they are very communistic in outlook, which she is not. So, distance, time, and philosophy differs. And, outside travelling to some of Yuja's key performances, and getting together when in China, it is rather hard to say how close they may be. No big leap to say thy ARE 'clueless' about her life. In fact, she has said their attitude was always 'whatever makes you happy, dear'; an attitude that sometimes did frustrate a daughter needing some emotional support. In such circumstances, I do not find her attitude 'unkind', much less 'snarky'. They did raise a talented, independent, and comfortable with her look and body woman, something she has stated many times she appreciated. They have simply been, artistically and socially, in the wings for 21 years...

Thank heaven, for now anyway, the Covid restrictions have been lifted enough for concertizing to begin, and she has been phenomenally busy. Anecdotes from his day show that Chopin played with extreme rubato, that is, with extreme expressive freedom in rhythm as well as in dynamics. To achieve that sort of rhythmic shaping while staying in synchrony with an orchestra is not at all easy, but Yuja manages it with precision. Obviously there are other fantastic pianists performing today; Yuja is as good as anybody.

I dont think we really know how much rubato Chopin did or did not play. She does have very good technique and color. She is quick and powerful and does play as well as a lot of today's well known pianists, but I dont think she is as good as everyone. She does have a huge repetoire, to her credit.

    @walkercatenaccio. That is an interesting story about Liszt and Chopin. I havd not heard it. I wonder if Liszt meant it as a barb. Although they were friends, it is also known that Liszt was not known for always being ,ind to Chopin. I have nothing against Yuja..she is well known and highly regarded by many and has earned the right to interpret as she sees fit. I just dont like hearing anyone say any one pianist is "the best" of his generation. There are many and even more coming up right behind Yuja. I am waiting to hear later this year Hayato Sumino perform Chopin PIano Concerto #1. I admire his golden touch, technique, and dynamics with little to almost no rubato. He is the one to watch..still very young and improving all the time

    Interesting to compare with Rubinstein's rendition. There is more contrast in moods and sensuousness in Wang's interpretation (especially the 2nd mvt). With Rubinstein there is more consistency in sound,. Rubinstein's gives the impression that it is more directly from the composer's thoughts.

    Poor Chopin. How can a composer who has written some of the most passionate and emotional music be played in such an inconsistent way? All Yuja Wang has to offer here is a purely decorative playing where everything is seen through the prism of delicacy and softness and becomes completely hollow as it goes. The atmospheric caricature of Chopin. She should listen to her compatriot the late Fou Ts'ong who calls this way of playing Chopin: "chopinina", and says that he does not agree with this conventional idea about Chopin. He rightly says his range is enormous and his passion and emotion are volcanic. The exact opposite of Yuja Wang's girlish Chopin. kzread.info/dash/bejne/aId-l9evl8u4lrg.html

    The sound is hollowed out in this recording. Of course it sounds soft. And this is very early Chopin, when he wrote a lot of fluff pieces. Yes he wrote some of the most emotionally complex pieces but not when he wrote this piece. That all came later. By the way what you call "volcanic" emotion I call crude control of touch.

    @@cprae It is not me who speaks of passion and volcanic emotion but Fou Ts'ong, and I agree with him. Chopin is undoubtedly the composer who touches me the most, and I can't stand it when it is played with cuteness and without scale. I like Yuja Wang a lot but her mannered view of Chopin is unbearable to me. Sure there are many nuances p and pp as well as leggierissimo, dolcissimo and delicatezza in this youthful concerto, but there are also f and ff as well as risoluto, appassionato and many con forza. Where are these latest for Yuja Wang? Her palette of nuances goes from ppp to mf and she plays in a narrow way without passion and above all without spontaneity.

Just irrelevant, nonsensical musical prejudice over this fine performance. The "gross caricature" is more applicable to the critical bias you bring to her play, and the whiff of mere musical pompousness that rises from it.
