YouTube Has a Problem

Ойын-сауық

KZread has problem with unfairly disabling comments on many channels. It seems to be mainly affecting smaller creators, and no one is really talking about it. This is my entire sequence of dialogue with KZread support over the past two years about this issue and what I've learned so far. I'm hoping that this will bring awareness to the problem and hopefully actually get it fixed!
So far the problem is on and off for me and I've only noticed it on shorts; it doesn't seem to affect my long-form content and it sometimes stops happening for months at a time only to randomly start happening again.

you can when you upload a video switch sort "sort to newest first". default is top comments. large channels with hundreds of comments have this problem too. and with top comments yt censor at will. this is at least usefull as reason that i not pay for yt this censory of youtube start extrenme heavy in feb when war begin. yt creators should write they do disable sort of top comments because yt censor too much.

When you post a video, do you mark "content is made for children" or "not made for children"? You should mark not for children if it's not specifically made for kids (It's not the same as saying adult content, it just means not aimed at children). Maybe that will fix it? Good luck!

The absolute worst thing is KZread flagging channels for "child content", in a weird way to protect children, even though if it WAS for children or didn't want comments, they could just flag for either. Theres so many ways to make content for kids, but Child Content disables comments AND makes it harder to search for.

This never ending back and forth without results seems like a common thing for youtube creator support. It’s almost impossible to reach a person who can actually change something unless you have millions of subscribers (and even then..).The automatic algorithm systems they have in place are a double edged sword.

The best thing the KZread creators can do is this: show up, in person, in front of KZread Headquarters, in the THOUSANDS so that you can DEMONSTRATE against all the ways that KZread has done you dirty. Mass-demonstrations are the REAL way to get things DONE! Petitions are just a waste of time and money.

Obviously! Have you ever tried to get help from Google support as a user? Even a paying user? There's no fucking way to contact anyone that can help about anything. It's a never-ending labyrinthe of pages with hints and small lists of how to do this or that, and when you give up and finally try to contact help by asking a question in the void emptiness and hoping an answer will come eventually, you learn at some point that NONE OF THE DUMBASSES THAT WILL ANSWER YOU AND SUGGEST POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS ACTUALY WORK FOR GOOGLE! It's all a big network of users with more experience and time to waste trying to help other users that don't even realise they are not talking with a Google employee, because it's not stated, my even hinted and even when told that this is the only help you can get, it looks so much like the way you would contact actual service from a company that many users never even compute that they never spoke to anyone that has the power to help them about anything and there will never be any possible way to do so. Except maybe fly to California and show up at Google hq with a baseball batt. And even then I bet they will get another google user to try to fight you off campus. Fucking bunch of assholes

Ergh, that does seem incredibly frustrating. What gets my goat about it particularly is that very often the issues creators face don't really seem get looked at seriously unless a big stink is kicked up by very large youtubers, which really shouldn't be the way things are. I hope it brings the issue to the support team in a way that truly escalates and changes what's wrong, and with priority for timing. Having worked support (not YT) myself, I can agree that it sounds like the staff are unfortunately only going through the motions that are allowed, which are circular and useless, and agree with you that the structure of support is therefore broken since it's useless for resolution of issues on the platform. I hope the issue gets genuinely resolved, instead of the multi-year runaround that you're getting now.

I have 420K subscribers and I have been having some of the same issues. I have reached out to KZread support about this problem several times and the problem only got worse. It seems the larger my subscription base gets, the number of views decreases. I feel like I am being punished for bringing it up. I was getting more views at 100k than I am getting at over 400K. I have decided not to make a video about it because I have seen others do so and nothing changed. I liked your video and will share it on my channel. Good luck to you and keep up the good work! Hopefully things will change in the future.

Yes, protecting minors is important, especially on a platform so big and open as KZread. But that is a process that just can't be automated while casting this wide a net. And your experiences with their support just shows something I have been saying for a while. KZread is not a platform for creators anymore, it is a platform for brands. Brands big enough with an impact to actually reach somebody at the other end of the support page. I still really hope they adress this problem at some point. I am not affected as a creator (20 subs and never showing my face lol), but many creators whose work I enjoy might be, so... This just sucks. Good luck Rachel! May the odds be ever in your favor. 😆 And have fun with being thirty later this year. I still have till November, then I'm officially OLD. 🤣

Maybe use a face mask as a test to see its effect while keeping other parameters the same? You can also play with makeup to see its effects. I doubt its your voice or de words you choose. One by one, changing a parameter at a time foe each test video may be faster than interacting with the support teams. Don't know if you've tried these ideas. I feel for you 💜

This would be my guess too. You might consider casting this as an issue of sexism: it seems highly unlikely that the algorithms would confuse a 29-year-old man with a child. And if makeup or dressing differently is required for a woman to be seen as a woman by KZread then 😬.

One of the parameters it has likely picked up on through its training data is verticality of video, with minors more likely to post vertical videos, hence, more likely to mis-identify your Shorts as including a minor. But since that was never explicitly programmed by anyone, KZread developers can legitimately say "Shorts use exactly the same system as other videos".

Hoping somehow that this can be figured out. I watch a lot of your videos. In fact, you were one of the people that inspired me to finally pick up the guitar in the first place. I was always nervous about how difficult it would be for me to learn guitar on my own (with my online help, of course). But you really mapped out my expectations with your videos highlighting your beginners journey. That may seem silly, but I really had a good idea of how long it took for someone like you to learn. I knew I couldn't dedicate as much time, but it did basically help me understand the incremental improvements I might make over the first couple of years. So yeah, I consider you a strong influencer in the guitar world. And your videos and your wisdom is far more approachable to someone like me because you learned the same way I am, and you don't have a decade and a half of guitar playing experience like some of these people. They're great as well. But your channel helps to keep all that grounded in my mind. So yeah, all of the automation here sucks. I hope KZread can figure it out. I consume a lot of KZread Content, some from people that may also have similar issues (young looking, but not a minor). Good luck, Rachel!

I genuinely wonder if the cause of this repeated issue is because the automated system thinks you look too young🫣 I’ve been following your channel for a few years now and thought you were a teenager until you said you’re 30 (you’re elder than me hahah!) I do hope this gets resolved though, people like you motivate me to pick up my guitar every now and then❤️💪🏼

Yes, doubtless her appearance closely matches what the black-box AI thinks a kid looks like, and posting the videos vertically is probably also characteristic of something kids tend to do, which is why it happens only on Shorts.

I noticed a while ago a bunch of videos from small folk music creators were disappearing from playlists/watch later. Also noticed that some of them when I came across them again, as well as some similar music content - were flagged as directed at kids. A creator that I follow on Twitch also said they'd been having problems with YT flagging their content as directed at kids. YT content directed at kids doesn't have comments and can't be saved to playlists, in itself this nukes the algorithm recommendation of content but I also suspect impacting SEO. I came to the suspicion that a lot of these disappearing videos weren't being taken down, they were being lost because of algorithm auto-flagging them inappropriately. This seems to be a problem that most substantially impacts smaller and independent creators that don't have clout for YT to take them seriously which is devastating for growth potential for the creator, and makes it really hard for me to keep track of content I enjoy as someone in the audience. Really disappointing to hear that YT just don't take it seriously, give you the run-around for trying to fix it and just trust that the algorithm makes the right decision without questioning the system in place which is demonstrably not fit for purpose. I guess the only thing you can do is swear profusely in your content so it won't get flagged as targeted towards a young audience.

In any decision process, even using humans, there are false positives and false negatives. The equilibrium depends on where the decisor put the weight on one or the other. A downside of the KZread's paranoia about minors (a general problem in current US culture) is that they assume that false positive identifications are not so bad, so they are not worried about it. As Aristotle said, the virtue is not in the extremes. I hope you get a solution soon!

This sounds really frustrating! I remember talking to some KZread folks at a panel once. They said that even with manual review processes, they don't actually watch entire videos. It seems that there is some software that shows them at a glance some key frames and they make a quick decision, I think perhaps spending less than 30 seconds? Maybe even less than that. So it could be that they are just seeing some key frames and agreeing with what the algorithm said, instead of actually watching the moving video. I understand why they have to do it. There is so much stuff to review, they do it quickly and are trying to err on the side of caution. Though you'd think after so many times, they could take a few more minutes to actually look into it. Especially if it's escalated to an internal team and bugs were fixed. I think they'd perhaps have some time to watch videos and test things out and all that. I noticed in that one video with the guitar, the thumbnail could be construed as being a minor. But that seems to be the crux of the problem. Only evaluating based on video frames, rather than the actual video in motion.

Infantilizing women is a societal problem and as an IT specialist I always knew that it was eventually coming to this point. Algorithms and therefore programs reflect the real world and the programmers' biases. That's also the reason why facial recognition software identifies black women as black men and generally identifies women less accurately than men.

This is not a “Closing the stable door after the horse has bolted” type of issue. You have had positive control of your content from day one. Your honesty and enthusiasm speaks volumes for your determination. I wonder if we are in a very transitional time as KZread,Google, X (Twitter)… take efforts to hand the sorting of content over to an algorithms and minimal human interaction. Maybe we’re seeing initial descriptors associated with your channel early on pigeonholing you and KZread staff can’t see it and/or do anything about it. Your channel is inspiring and your documented progress is a controlled study in self taught guitar playing. It’s very valuable data. I’m a play by ear musician. I take away a lot from your channel. It sounds to me like there are several analytic engines at work here, and they're doing different things and not in the same way nor updating each other that a video has cleared for risk content. Seems like when in the doubt the whole system will default to the disabling activities that you're seeing. It also seems like the responses from support aren't even from people, feels like its auto responded from text analytics. Clearly, this is a systemic issue that is affecting you and others. I think it's awesome that you're bringing it up. The issue needs to be escalated from support side. It's possible they've done so already, but if there's a myriad of engine analytics in play, no one knows the single spot where they integrate. That's just my two cents, keep up the good work. I really enjoy your videos and have followed your channel for several years now. A crazy idea, find a gandolf costume or something to look 300 years old. See if that beats the system !

KZread creates problems that quite literally NEVER get fixed. They care very little about fixing stuff. Here's an example that affects viewers (not creators). If you Cast videos to a TV, VERY frequently Ads will mysteriously turn Captions on. The Ad will turn Captions on, all by itself (no human involved). If you toggle them off, later Ads will turn them back on. When it turns the Captions on in the Ads, that carries forward to the actual video. I've watched playlists of videos cued up 20 at a time and literally had to pick up a remote (or my Tablet being Cast from to the TV client) after EVERY Ad to turn the Captions back off. There's a Tip about turning the Caption setting off under the same account in the Windows KZread Browser mode (so a non-mobile browser) instead of just on the Android/Tablet client and/or the TV client This inhibits this behavior with the Ads for a few hours... then it all happens again. My point here is if you search Reddit youll see this has been an ongoing issue people have been complaining about for about FIVE years. But never fixed. KZread literally doesnt care. In fact, because its probably forcing people to buy the Ad free KZread (to get rid of Ads that are doing this(, KZread probably WANTS the bug. Summary: THEY DONT CARE.

I've had this same comment disabling issue off and on again for years on my long form content. It seems to come in waves where I'll notice that a brand new video's comments are randomly disabled and I'll have to fight the system for an hour or so reenabling the comments. Then, I'll notice a handful of other older videos have also had comments disabled (at some unknown point because, like you, I get no notification of this) and have to repeat the process for them as well. This will continue for a week or two's worth of new uploads before seemingly resolving itself. It's (thankfully) been an infrequent enough issue for me that I've never contacted Creator Support about it, assuming it was just a weird glitch. But hearing your story, I realize that I've also probably been dealing with this same misidentification issue. The fight to continually reenable comments has been a frustrating issue, though thankfully not as frequent of one for me as it seems to have been for you. But it's certainly got me wondering about how much it's potentially been affecting my recommendations and channel analytics all these years.

At this point I would consider fighting automation with automation. It would be perfectly possible for someone to write a script that checks all the videos on a channel, and if any of them have comments disabled, automatically re-enable comments, and notify the user of the script or log it to a file. You set up such a script to run automatically on your computer every day, every hour, or every 5 minutes if you like. The only potential problem I can see is KZread accusing you of hacking, or something ridiculous like that.

Here, have a like and a subscribe. KZread is a platform for advertisers, not for content creators. Whenever the interests of advertisers clash with the interests of content creators, it's always the content creators that get the short end of the stick. Also, they are fully aware that it's impossible for them to manually review videos, and I don't think they every manually review videos or channels, and so they rely solely on robots to do that, and as most people are aware, robots are woefully poorly suited to do this sort of the task. I'm sorry to hear that you're having these issues.

  • @Konzertheld

This is absolutely wild. Like the copyright system, this is some machine learning algorithm that technically cannot be fully understood, so KZread employees don't actually know what is flagged for what reason and yet, they don't have a system to correct things if they go wrong, not even after correcting single cases once (like re-enabling comments). Do they have a verification system for your age like banks do (WebID or whatever) or do they just take the age you entered in your account? I also find it pretty wild that to watch content that has been flagged inappropriate you just have to login. Also, more often than not, "inappropriate" content is a 90s dance videos showing women in bikinis.
