Your Weather Radar May Be Wrong

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

If you have a Stratus or any other ADS-B in Weather device and have it paired with your iPad you have a fantastic tool that gives you full color radar. Right on your iPad you can overlay your route of flight giving you just about all the information you need right at your fingertips. There is one catch though… it may not be accurate.
ADS-B Weather radar being received through a stratus or other ADS-B in device may be late, and if your iPad processor is running slow and not populating as it should, your weather radar may be really late. Basically, the weather that you are looking at on your iPad may not be what’s going on out the window.
This exact scenario happened to us on the way back from NY to DC on a super hazy day. We had been talking with Flight Service Prior on about the exclusion zone around the Hudson river corridor and they had been watching our path home.
Yes! I bought an airplane! This program has some initial numbers and breaks down the monthly expenses. Owning an airplane can be affordable... but the upgrades.... That is what will get me. Watch this program to find out what ownership costs.
Have you always wanted to learn how to fly but now you are over 50? Get out there and start and learn! There are so many people in there 50's and 60's who are just starting to fly so what are you waiting for?

Great video and advice! We have some amazing tools available to general aviation these days but they do have limitations that can get you into a heap of trouble real quick if you don’t fully understand the technology. I’m no guru but this is generally the process I follow once I’m in the air (in addition to talking to ATC, Flight Service, etc.): (1) If VMC, I look out the window and try to match up what I’m seeing on my iPad or other cockpit glass that might display weather - means I avoid flying near any sort of convective weather at night! The idea of flying into an embedded thunderstorm that I couldn't see scares the crap out of me! (2) I listen closely to the communications between ATC and other aircraft (deviation requests, precipitation reports, etc.) I try to picture in my mind where those other aircraft are in relation to the weather and myself. The great thing about ADS-B is that you can often see the other aircraft on your iPad. (3) I’m fortunate enough to have both ADS-B and Sirius XM weather - I compare the two feeds to what I am seeing out the window. It seems to me that Sirius XM is a bit more current but both can be seriously delayed. (4) When in doubt, I reroute! I’m always thinking about where do I go if I don’t like what is in front of me.

Nice day to have a copilot. That was excellent help from flight service, I haven’t gotten referred over to them like that. Usually I’m on an ifr flight plan these days, even if not needed just to be in the system. But this time of year weather changes fast. I do use adsb weather resources, and yes don’t rely fully as delayed. I’m also getting used to understanding what it shows vs what to expect in real life though. Amazing tools we have today vs just 20 years ago in the GA cockpit

you are correct the NEXRAD images are delayed, by the time a full sweep of the radar is made, the image is processed and then transmitted the image is a minimum of 15 minutes old. Might be good to see trending but not good enough to pick your way through thunderstorms. Look in the AIM for update intervals for the FIS-B products, there is how often it is retransmitted and how often it is updated.

There is a good video AOPA accident of a piper in Texas with delay in weather as the fault.

I had some awareness about the inherent delay in getting Nexrad sweeps over ADS-B in (about 15 minutes), but the reminder (or warning) that you can have additional issues with the device not updating is very helpful to know and keep in mind.

Great tip! Many years ago in "I Learned About Flying From That" or Student Pilot, there was an article about how someone failed to take into account that their weather radar was actually providing a snapshot from about 5 minutes previous to "now". Almost got them in big trouble with the weather. P.S. Maybe it's my imagination but the new engine sounds great!

This was fantastic! I wish you'd kept going though so that I could have seen how it got resolved with approach. Did you get the Bravo clearance? Did going that way avoid the weather?

Yes but the camera battery died right at the end of that segment so what happened was we requested an IFR clearance and diverted to Baybridge airport in Maryland just outside of Annapolis - after we made the turn and started flying directly west we could see both thunderstorms on either side of us and it was hazy in front of us but once we cross the Delaware with river and started going south it was wide open and it started to clear up. I’m glad you liked it it was a good episode for me as well! Thanks for watching!

@@Over50andLearningToFly Thanks for the explanation. By the way, I started watching your videos in February and they convinced me that at 53 I hadn't missed my dream of flying. I'm just finishing up my PPL and I put a deposit on a Cherokee 140 that I hope to be able to pick up with my CFI in a few weeks, and will take straight into instrument training. You were a big influence on getting here. Thank you!
