"We don't hire God to produce the same things the world can produce." Woah. I LOVE this distinction so much. The Holy Spirit produces fruit in us to glorify Christ through us. He helps us grow in love that we may use this love to love Christ and the church and the world. He helps us grow in patience that we may patiently wait on the Lord and show the world our confidence in God's faithfulness while we wait. He helps us grow in self control that we might continue to choose Christ over all other notions of fulfillment, that the world may see our delight and satisfaction in Jesus alone and wonder at the genuineness of it. It is not merely for our own productivity. But in keeping with the same thought - all things are for Him and to Him and about Him. Including the fruits the Holy Spirit grows in our lives.

I believe that self control is in part dependent on the believer's willingness to submit to the Holy Spirit (Walk in the Spirit); otherwise it would not be called self control at all. As we submit our will to God's will, He empowers us by His Spirit to do what would be otherwise difficult or impossible based on our own ability. You can see this principle in James 4:7.

Well said. There is an action on the part of the believer, of some sort. Submission may be the best way to describe it. Without some form of "self" control, there would be no basis for a judgement for either the punishment of the unbeliever, nor the reward of the believer.

It's actually very, very simple to understand. As a Christian, we are empowered by the Spirit to exercise self-control, but we are NOT forced to. WE alone decide if we will yield to the Spirit, or not. If we (by faith) yield to the Spirit we will reap life, if we (thru unbelief) yield to the flesh we will reap corruption, the choice is 100% ours as Christians to make, that is why it is both a fruit AND a virtue.

before i came to christ i believed in being respectful but on my own terms. i believed in patience and waiting for marriage. but after baptism it was just so much harder to maintain these things. i believe these things are of the spirit.

My control over self comes from knowing what the bible says on each matter. Whether its allowed or not,knowing that logical premises are behind these rules "logos" everything has reason in the bible.

Mark did what's right and stepped down for a season until God restored him to his work and giftings again. God used Mark to help me understand how precious I am to Him (God). And what I was to accept in my marriage, and what I wasn't, during a time when most pastors were telling wives to be a door Mat for their spouse no matter how you are treated by them. These are the things that truly inspire me to be a better person. I know that the one molding me into a masterpiece will perfect me even if it means he burns out the impurities in me like a sword being forged in a flame. I just need to allow him to make me better and be willing to go through this pain.

The Holy Spirit produces self-control that is not of this world so we can do all things to the glory of God. That is the difference between stoic (worldly) self-control and Christian self-control. 1 Corinthians 10:31 "Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do ALL to the glory of God"

Faith alone has led to many incorrect beliefs like this one. How can you preach to people that they have no control over themselves. That is disparaging the humans he made us to be. One could logically conclude and blame the Holy Spirit if I ended up having an adulterous affair. Do we have free will or not? You know who else claims we don’t have free will? The atheists. If we don’t have free will then Jesus wouldn’t say over and over things like: Repent. If you want to follow me, deny yourself, take up your cross and follow me. If you love me obey my commandments. Never does he say just believe in me and let the Holy Spirit do all the hard work of being righteous and grateful to God for our lives.

I know this man understands the Holy Spirit is needed for victory over sin but sometimes he just seems to forget who provides the power and just talks about how we must fight the fight.

The Old Testament was "obey or die" because of the law. With the new covenant through Jesus Christ, we are not to trust our own hearts nor think too highly of ourselves. We want to obey the Lord out of love because we have been born again, not because we're trying to earn His forgiveness which is what makes people become religious.

But God knows if we break just one we are condemned, so He sent His only Son to fulfill the ultimate sacrifice. If you believe Jesus took your past and FUTURE sins and nailed them to the Cross, you are a free man my friend. You don't lose your salvation based on performance. Please don't take away the power and majesty away from His sacrifice. Don't focus on your "trying to be good"...instead focus on how good the Lord is and REJOICE because you have been set free and you've been adopted by Him. Its not about keeping score, its about a relationship with the Lord himself. Paul says this in Romans 7; "What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? Seek Him above everything else. But to even desire this must require a series of prayers beforehand. I was caught in a myriads of sins, unable to obey God. I hated it too. So I just asked Him to change my heart and, if necessary, for Him to change the circumstances around me so that seeking Him would be the only reasonable option. In my case He did both and although it ain't pretty (horrible, atrophying chronic pain) it's definitely worth it. God bless

Yeah, because I don't agree with this 4 min message as a whole. The Holy Spirit does not control me. It works and guides with my will but I must make changes and surrender many things to have self discipline (same topic).

Real self control is doing God's will. Living by faith for him. What is self? If we are made in the image of God. Then self is supposed to be God's image. Therefor his will.

The only way to find out if this true, ask God in the name of Jesus Christ, to reveal the spirit of truth to you, and submit yourself, to the will, of God Almighty Creator,!!!

It all begins with the will to do good!.

So if a man doesn’t have self control when he gets mad etc... and breaks things curses me out and than asks me to forgive him and begs me not to leave him and to accept hum just the way he is. Dear Irena, I am so sorry. I believe 1 Corinthians 7 indicates you can separate and remain chaste. You need to be safe and your husband needs to repent. Keep praying for him and remain true to the marriage....but go somewhere where you feel safe until and if he is truly repentant.

Irina Quintero, I was in a similar situation, but so very committed to staying with my husband no matter what! This article helped me a lot, gave me direction to think about, pray on, and act on in my own power as a wife ( bible.org/seriespage/11-characteristics-godly-marriage-1-peter-31-7 ). Peter tells us that we are powerful as wives and our example can bring our husbands to true dedication to Jesus Christ. I believe it is true. My husband's outbursts are no more. He is in prayer constantly instead of trying to do things on his own. I am so very grateful for the change God has brought in him. Praise God! Thank you Jesus! Praying for you and your husband too.

The blood of the Christ of the new covenant secures for us Christians the working of Holy Spirit

God gave us the freedom to make decisions, he gave us temptation in order for us to use SELF control . The Lord gives NOTHING to help us.....UNLESS WE HAND OVER OURSELVES TO GOD. Then he gives us LESS power because he trusts we will walk with him. But by God do we have to prove our worth. The Lord is not weak, he wants sensitive Warriors who will give their all. Not following peasants who are scared of their own shadows. He wants us strong, tough, gentle, forgiving and merciless but all full of mercy. Why so many contradictions? He wants us to be human and lay it down before him, he'll not give one iota until he sees the whites of our eyes , the blisters on our fingers and the skin off of our knees. Our Lord is mighty!! Do not accept cowardice and expect your shitty sinful ways to be forgiven because you THINK you are a Christian who prays but then covets his neighbours wife time time again... He wants us true and only the true get to the next round.

We fail to look at the message of the Bible wholesomely. God's charge against mankind is that he rebels, meaning that man can but chooses not to obey God hence guilty as charged. "He came to his own but they did not acknowledge or receive him." "Put to death the passions at work in you" "Resist the devil and he will flee from you." "When the gentiles who do not have the law do those things required by the law it shows that the requirements of the law are written in their hearts." Israel had the law but refused to obey it. Surely we cannot say that God gave them laws that they couldn't obey. So, I think Piper is stretching the text to fit into a calvinistic perspective. How is stoicism different from the self control encouraged in scripture? He says that word is the same then says we cannot "hire God" for just the ordinary*(emphasis added) self control. He is clearly speculating and going beyond what is written or what is the logical conclusion of the text(s). According to Piper the self control of the Spirit "must" be different. There is no way God can work in us just ordinary self control-he is speculating. The implication here is that God is charging mankind for a sin which he did not equip them with the ability to resist. This is accusing God of Sin. This is a calvinistic doctrine which violates scripture.

Not only that, he says the self control of the spirit is different, but never states how it's different. I have no idea what he's trying to say here. I don't think he's implying that God is charging mankind for a sin which he did not equip them with the ability to resist. I don't understand where you're getting that from.

@@JohnL9013It's a consequence/implication of saying that the self control of the Spirit must be different. It amounts to absolving man of guilt & charging God with sin for God says that man is guilty but he did not equip him to resist.

So , we accepted Christ, because he made us accept him. Then, my friends this is not love. We have to choose to accept the gift of life. We don’t love our spouse because they made us love them, but we decided to love them. Provided by once and for all sacrifice of atonement paid by our savior Jesus Christ. John 3:16-17.

Ingrid Garcia No you got that wrong. Self control is not the holy spirit how could it be called self control if you your self are not in control but the holy spirit is? Thats not what paul is saying and if you have something that shows you the greek look it up and you'll see what paul is saying. As for me slamming "a sister in an abusive marriage" You are a fool to listen and beleive just her side of the story. This goes on far to much in the church today and only on the witness of two or three others can the truth be established and that after hearing both sides. As I read all the stupid comments in so called christian advice to her it is hard to read such nonsense. People telling her to divorce (sending her to hell by doing so), and not a word in reality. Women always make out that they are completly innocent in these situations but they know the constant insults and put downs, or the desire to be with another man so cause trouble to break off the relationship and run around making sure every one knows how her man shouted and did stuff but don't tell everyone how for days or weeks or months they deliberately built up the anger in him. Thats the reality of it. No one will get away with helping to ruin a marrage no matter if its a person giving unbiblical advice or a person in the marriage trying to make it fail or a man or woman being abusive. God will judge all. Grow up and follow what your bible says not men or women that make rubbish up. The holy spirit will overpower your emotions but you have to submit and call out each time those emotions rise up and the person you are in the flesh never changes no matter how long you have been saved. So if you walk in the flesh you instantly return to that same nasty person.

To which your God placed there intentionaly. For you entity to be so powerful and forgiving, but allows thousands of inocent women and children to die every single day. To send down ITS SON as a sacrafice. If your entity has a some great plan, then that plan mean Billions of inocent lives dying for no reason. Lets not forget the fact that your Jesus was a Jew, yet you took the Jewish religion, turned into your own, and made up these stories about Hell to use it as a Fear tactic to deprive people of their lives and make them fear death. There many things wrong with your Religion, Christianity is too brainwashed and full of fear to even accept that fact.

Jolly Cooperation It is not my fault you hate the truth. Yes it does imply force. Christ is your Creator and your King, and you will bow to Him along with your father Satan. There is no choice. I don't care if that offends you. Truth hurts. I can clearly see you hate God. The One who gave you life, sustains your life this very second, and died in your place to save your life. You are evil and you will suffer the same fate as Satan if you continue in your rebellion. *Christ is King, every knee will bow to Him and every tongue will confess He is Lord.* I'm sure that statement offends your father the devil as well.

@@FanofAslan it's his personality. But having said that, i'm not a christian type of guy. I grew up a catholic, and many of the christian people i encountered over the years i found bigoted, closed minded , and hypocritical. I was a buddhist monk for a while in a tibetan monastery. I am not a fan of people who think their path is the only path, and if not ; you're going to hell for all eternity. That really does not resonate with me. But this guy, i dunno!!! I'm a good reader of people , and there is a bad resonance going on

Christians, me included, are all hypocrites; we champion the need to repent, to turn away from sin, yet we all still sin. However, a true Christian hates his sin and yearns to be rid of it. He regrets each mistake, each fall, even each deliberate indulgence, confesses it to God and thanks Him for forgiveness. He ought to do this without becoming critically judgemental of nor unloving to others. Bigotry is an accusation thrown at Christians a lot these days. One person's bigotry and close-mindedness is another person's resolute mind. Today we are supposed to accept just about everything and everyone as fine; this is referred to as a virtue of tolerance. It's a question of re-drawing the line of sin; we can all agree that murder, rape, acts of terrorism and under-age sex are wrong; but God has drawn the line already; humans have subjectively shifted it to do with justification what they want to do: have sex out of wedlock, kill the unborn etc. The eating of the fruit in the Garden of Eden symbolised this: we want our own understanding of good and evil. I ask you: is a parent of a toddler bigoted for not allowing the youngster to get his own way all the time? Living without boundaries isn't freedom; it's chaos. The gospel is beautifully simple yet amazingly profound. Christ offers everyone redemption. His acts of deep love, taking the rap for the things that we've all done wrong, enables us to walk out of the court freely. We are all guilty, but the debt is paid, the sentence is commuted, we are free to go and live, inspired by the love of our Creator God to walk in faith and love ourselves. An unloving Christian is not in touch with God. John Piper has a tremendous zeal. He desperately wants for others to come to know the real God. Not every prescher, teacher or singer inspires me or any other Christian, and some are (we are warned) wolves in sheep's clothing. As a former Buddhist, I guess a more tranquil style would resonate better with you. I like Casa de Jesús, a gentle man who has simple but profound messages on KZread about the love of God. Is God in your imagination a loving God or an angry God? I think many see God as angry with them. Read the story told by Jesus of The Prodigal Son. There is the nature of God. Yes, for those who choose to stay away, His anger at their waywsrd living remains on them; but for those who return to their loving Heavenly Father, an eternal loving, gentle embrace awaits.

Jesus is claiming that there is only one way that makes us acceptable to God; to trust in Jesus. We often want to be accepted as we are living. "I'm good enough!" we think. "I deserve to go to heaven!" You might have lived as a "good person", rarely doing bad stuff and never doing the very bad stuff. So you might be thinking "Why should I answer to this God?! I'm good!" I have to tell you that you're not reaching the standard God set for heaven: a sinless life. Only one person did that. If you accept this one person as your saviour, God sees you as He sees him: perfect. Jesus is, if you like, your ticket to heaven. There is no other way. That news makes some hugely grateful; they humbly confess their wrongdoing and pledge to try, through God's help, to lead a better life. For many, their response is "Pah! One way? Nonsense. I'll do it my way." This is where the road divides, on this choice. We must all choose.

The Way I don’t think that’s necessary here even though I don’t agree with Calvinism. I don’t really disagree with anything he said here; did you disagree on some points?
