    Love that people are talking more about the role of the jaw in whole body & even mind/mental health. Unfortunately, some people will need to see a neuromuscular dentist. If you're a mouth breather, have a small mouth, or have had extensive dental work, & of course if you have TMJ/TMD, it could be a sign you might benefit from some additional help. I for one have had a number of teeth removed from my upper jaw b/c of my small mouth, which sets my jaw further back and creates chronic tension. Most orthodontists are not aware of this and will fix your teeth cosmetically while causing you issues years down the line. The Life Stylist Podcast #509 offers great info for those interested. Thanks again Conor.

    Anecdotally agreed. This fall has been very effective - started school and took as a project to always stand in public transport. Approximately and hour a day. A lot of muscle growth for free, but also much less one-sided bite. Like just the left foot has experienced a lot of change, from feeling rather curved to having a lot more contact area. At some point I had noticed it was difficult altogether have the molars meet, I had actually chipped a front tooth again just due to biting them together in a funny way at the end of fo the summer. Although stressing out and compensating with coffee also made neck really tense and cause a lot of jaw fatigue, teeth grinding together. But anyway, after some months of standing in the public transport, back is much less imbalanced, the hip doesn't feel as stiff and pushed to one direction and molars meet easily. Body is such a complicated chain of events.

    One thing that helped me dramatically was getting the glue residue off from where I had my permanent retainer. I had braces and then a permanent retainer placed on the back of my teeth afterwards. Well my permanent retainer ended up breaking and I never did anything about the glue on the back of my front teeth. The glue caused my bottom teeth to rest upon it, leaving me with a perpetual open bite. I never thought anything about because I could “somewhat” feel my molars in the back of my mouth. After trying the exercise and techniques and only making marginal improvements I went to my dentist and had them remove the glue on the back of my front teeth. The moment that my mouth closed and I felt my molars truly touch together my whole body shifted and I started breathing into my diaphragm. It was dramatic enough to feel like someone turned on a light switch in my body that had always been off. Even the dentist commented when my body shifted over. A plus from all this happening was that my face became more symmetrical and nose became straighter 😂

    As a hyper mobile, dyspraxic and autistic person, I find this fascinating. I have very poor proprioception and very unequal “feedback” between my left and right sides. A crowded palette and scoliosis are both common in hyper mobile people, because of our tissue laxity. My teeth did not “stay fixed” after braces. I would love to see you work with a hypermobile specialist coach (Tracey rudriguez is good) or autistic advocate. I have a hunch that there are physiological drivers behind common autistic stims, this video has me thinking of oral stims such as chewing and why they are so grounding. Ooh, I'm not hypermobile but am autistic and I wonder this too about stims! I've also wondered if being autistic is part of why it's been hard for PRI to "stick" effectively with my body, because of how much more inherently dysregulated it is due to sensory overload, etc.

    @@sciencensorcery it’s fascinating to me how different bodies need different regulation tools. I worked as an SEN support educator for a few years, and I’m convinced that lots of the spinning , swinging and hanging upside down stims that my students needed to be regulated also served to support hyper mobile vascular systems where the blood tends to pool in the lower body. I think that as autistics share our experiences online, the absolute deep need for stimming becomes increasingly apparent.

    I'm really curious what your opinion on Kjetil Larsen's (from msk neurology) method of fixing tmd. He says you should habitually learn to keep the resting posture of your mandible slightly forward to relieve tension and stress on the jaw joint. "TMD is caused by posterior shearing of the mandibular condyle. The mandibular condyle is too far back in resting position, due to a too posteriorly established occlusion, once again caused by underdevelopment of the maxilla bone. This will cause tearing down of the joint, disc, and so on. By gently protracting the mandible in posture, without co-activating the supra hyoid muscles, the joint will be allowed to heal permanently."

However, when in 'resting jaw' mode, I sense mainly the canines. Is it important for the molars to occlude when the jaw is resting? Also, I have had obstructive sleep apnea and a posterior tongue tie diagnosed. Would / should the splint help with this? Thanks in advance!

    I had same thing, the MAD gave me TMJ/TMD eventually. Go see a dentist who is PRI trained, or Pankey Institute trained. They can fit you with a bite split that will help with occlusion and tongue position. Then once you have the bite split go see a PRI trained therapist, they can give you exercises to help ensure you are properly diaphragmatically breathing and getting proper rib cage expansion. My dentist says MAD's probably won't be prescribed any more in 5 years, because long term they cause more problems than they solve.

    @@teleplusdeluxe It seems to be a treacherous road! The occlusal splint I was given caused a strong cross bite so I took it out pronto. Am planning on getting it adjusted (the dentist in question is working with a PRC trained therapist) so we’ll see how it goes. Am sort of nervous of doing permanent damage with a poorly fitted splint. A world with physios and airway focused dentists all working under one roof would be ideal. Maybe in 20 years time…

    Mewing can be great but one thing to watch out for is asymmetrical pressure being unconsciously applied by the tongue as a consequence of a misaligned jaw/asymmetrical tension throughout the cranium. This was an issue I had for a couple months without even realizing and it pushed me further into my dysfunctional patterns.

I also have to shift my jaw intentionally to right(to a straight occlusion position which is "unnatural" for me) while doing so to try to get rid of imbalances. After all that mewing became much easier to me. It's too early to judge in my case but overall it helps me get relaxed throughout my whole body and use my diaphragm to breath. I also consider an orthodontics in my late 30s. This can be your solution too

    Videos like this kind of make me feel hopeless. I have braces for a malocclusion (bad bite) and a resulting asymmetrical jaw. Am I just fucked or is there anything at this point that can help? And what types of doctors can help with this? I have searched for an entire year for someone like Conor around me but no one seems to have the top to bottom approach. Or they just straight up say I'm crazy when I show Conors videos (I've literally been put in the psych ward for suggesting my jaw affects the rest of the body). I just want some help somehow to live a normal life. Like what caused this in me? Can I ever be whole again or will I always deal with imbalances from head to toe? I really can't bear that thought. Just screaming into the void basically but if anyone has overcome this affliction, please respond and tell me how you started

    "What caused" - one of versions: it is developing because of mouth breathing and improper tongue posture/improper swallowing. The tongue should rest on the upper pallete naturally otherwise the upper palette won't develop correctly and this will develop into improper jaw aligment. Incorrect swallowing pattern leads to muscular imbalances in jaw causing it's shifting

    What you’re looking for is a neuromuscular dentist. They specialize in what Conor is talking about here. They won’t think you’re crazy. Also, when your body is misaligned, it starts to compensate which leads to imbalances and potentially injuries down the line due to favoring one side. Look up “eight Romano stretches” and do it daily. It’s a routine that puts your body back in alignment.

  • @conorharris

    @conorharris

    6 ай бұрын

    You would push to the opposite side you have less molar contact on. For example, in the typical right-shifted pattern (Left AIC), you would have better molar contact on right with jaw going left. So you would push your jaw right and expect better L molar contact, with some positive change in shoulder IR and ER potentially. It’s imperative you do it on the proper side, which is why I don’t think many people should do this stuff without oversight from a practitioner. Assessments are helpful, though. If you do it on the proper side, measurements tend to improve. If you do it on the wrong side, they get worse.

You get the point. Until i discovered that my teetht might be the issue, i made the doc remove the fillings. I put a finger from a glove in my nose with a device to blow it up, and over the course of the last 1 year i made my facial bones move back into place, my neck is still under "construction" . March last year i had my lower back "fall out" i knew exactly in that moment it went back into place.. Had major issues with my sinuses, now they are back and open. I wash them with 3% diluted H2o2 and it burns but the sinuses are unblocked. My eyes were also affected by these issues, made me cognitively into an "apeman" with low thoughts regarding myself and lower IQ sin some wats i believe...
