It is so hard when a pet passes away. Although we might get another, no two are the same. They all have their distinct personalities. You love the new pet without giving up the love for the one who passed away. The new pet will help the grief and empty feeling pass more quickly, but in no way takes away the love and memories of the other one.

Diane Benker Excellent comment! I lost my best friend 17 years ago and I still cry over the pain of loosing her. You NEVER forget!! It took me over ten years to be ready emotionally for another one and now I have a precious rescue furry baby and I love her to death but the pain of my last one will always stay with me.

Glad you have a new fur baby. Sometimes it takes years to be ready, and sometimes, for some people, it is best to get another one right away. Years ago I had a coworker who lost there 11 year old dog. She and her 2 young daughters were devastated. I went over there house the next day with a new puppy. I made sure it was the opposite sex and didn't look anything like the other one. In their grief were tears of saddnes and joy. It was especially good for the children. They loved their new puppy.

I hope this is true. I lost my best friend in the world, a mini-dachshund named Stella 1/31/22. She was. only barely 6. It was a freak accident and bad advice from a vet. It's felt dark and lonely since then. She was my shadow. I found out my dad is bringing my a new dachshund puppy in two days. When I find myself getting excited and then immediately feel guilty. I still cry nearly every day. I can't even look at her ashes. What if I love the new puppy just as much? What if I don't love her as much? I need some sunshine back in my life. I'm usually at home alone. We called Stella 'Jelly-Stelly' bc she hated me paying attention to anything else...lol. It is an incredible kindness from my father, and we have a dorkie who is depressed without his friend...so I think he needs her too....I've never been nervous about a puppy...lol.

Had to put my 18 year old cat down a week ago. At first i was not planning on getting another cat for a while, but would look online just to see who were out there. There was this bonded brother/sister that were having a hard time getting adopted because they were bonded. After my 18 year old passed i was struggling with loneliness, because she was the only pet left in the house, so it was really lonely. I saw these bonded cats and felt the need to adopt them because they had been waiting a while, and there was a petless house they could make their own together. I did this 3 days after losing my old cat, which even now surprises me i adopted so quick, but i needed someone and they needed someone. They aren't replacing my old cat, but its a new chapter.

I have an unnatural attachment to my dogs. It hurts so badly when an animal dies. My Instagram is all dogs that I grieve for when they pass! I have mental illness. PTSD, bipolarity, and schizophrenia. My dogs saved my life. I was lying in bed willing myself to die. Then I saw a photo of a pitbull who's eyes begged for compassion and love. I dragged myself out of bed and went to start the adoption process. Which led to rescues 2-7. They gave me a reason to live. I know they need to go out, eat food, drink water and exercise. I can't lay in bed any longer and wish for death. Lol Every single morning I start my day with my pack. Outside, breakfast, fresh water. It isn't easy in the desert with no running water or electricity, but they rescued me and I will spend the rest of their days pampering and loving each one of them!

My baby girl left this world 3 weeks ago on 1/20/2024. I’m still devastated and cry about her every day…she was my sidekick for 12.5 years and I adored her and she me…she took my joy with her when she left. But a week ago I became a foster to a senior pup and I was nervous but it’s the best decision I could have made. He’s helping me heal and I’m helping him. And I’m only fostering for now so there’s no full on commitment, although I’m committed to giving him the best life while he’s here…I’ll probably be a foster fail

I lost my beloved companion on 1/10/24. His name was Jax. I still miss him so, so much. I live alone, therefor he was my company day & night. I ask for signs from above to see if he knows I think of him daily. I've been going to adoption events & finally put in an application to see if I'm approved to adopt. I question if I'm teally ready or is it too soon. I tell myself if its meant to be, it will happen Mama. (In heaven above) will guide me to the appropriate pup for his mama.

When I lost my last dog the house felt so empty, even though I had 2 other toy poodles. It was like we were just 3 old ladies sitting around every day. So I looked for another male dog to fill the void. I got a schnoodle puppy that I had to watch every minute, when he was out of his crate, for 2 years! He wouldn’t sit or stay but he did the craziest things like opening the shower curtain every time to get water all over him. He would lay in the extra tub until I let him drink from the faucet (water bowl was always full). He would wait in a spot on the floor until I woke up and looked at him. Then he would crawl to me smiling. He sat for hours under his Christmas stocking staring at it, knowing it was full. Now he is dying of kidney disease. I will never find another like him. 💔💔 He is my heart.

They were my bestfriends until one of them passed away in 2018, and we had to put my other one down in 2019. I am now getting a dog in 10 days and I am beyond excited! But I am definitely having withdrawals. I will love this puppy with all of my heart but something tells me I’m not in it all the way and it scares me to think I won’t be happy.

When I lose a pet the grief is just as bad and usually more so than the death of a person to me. I usually adopted older dogs people didn't want but they were the best so smart and grateful to finally get a home of love and luxury dog style. So with them being older I went through loss more often and it seemed the ones I got at couple or were close all died within a year of each other. The pain was so deep it was suffocating. But then a new life came that needed a home that eased the pain. It never got easier but I then realized that I could give another a loving home it had never had, at least for it's last years for however long that maybe and it helped. My motto is "There's always room for one more".

I have had many dogs and a few cats. When they pass away it is very sad and the only thing that ever makes me feel better is saving another life from a rescue or dog pound. When I adopt an animal I know about the relatively short lifespan. It is part of the deal. Since they have a good long life with me and I know they would not have had a happier/longer life somewhere else, I have to accept the loss. I give myself a few weeks to grieve, then start looking for another life to save. The loss is great but not enough to discourage me from adopting again. It is therapeutic for those going thru a loss now to read the comments and share their feelings about this so thank you for sharing this video.

I kept saying “I want another dog”, then one day I saw a picture of my friend w an English Bulldog and I just knew that was my dog. I contacted him and it turned out he needed a home. He reminds me a lot of my Yorkie, they have similar personalities. He found me.

You wouldn't be betraying them, I lost my boy if 15 years last August and my heart tore 10 ways when I had to say goodbye. Getting a new companion in your life will give you somewhere to send all of that love left from saying goodbye to your companion. You can never replace the one you lost, but so many animals sit and wait for loving homes and never get the chance.so don't see it as replacement, see it as helping, an action of helping each other in need.

I grieve during the process of losing my pet, and I have found that animals are able to spiritually connect and even show themselves very quickly. I've had them playing and running around very soon after burial. Also, I have been able to feel them, for example as I cleaned soon after losing fuff I picked up her round cat bed and hugged it to me. I felt her weight, and her Kitty love, and it was such a gift. Fuff was my daughter in cat form. she died on may 31 2014. May 31 2015 was my last day in my married home. That very day: As I talked with a couple male moving guys, a black and white cat (I knew whose he was but had never met him) locked his eyes onto mine and next thing I knew he was in my arms! (only after I got to know him and discovered he had great trepidations regarding men and big large trucks did I realize his decision was borne of desperation and that he had probably been the animal treed in the neighbor's yard by his bird dogs...I'd been out on at least 2 occasions to distract the dogs enough that whoever was in the tree could be on their way.) Asked if he was my cat, I replied that he was as of right now and I set him up comfortably in a room in the house and collected him early in the morning the next day. he fit in seamlessly with all 3 of my girls. As I photographed him one day, I went to crop the photo and my heavens IT WAS FUFF. I showed the cropped photo to my sister who immediately identified the cat in the photo as my Fuffy! Big Kitty (he would acknowledge no other name, and I already knew his prev.owners had called him 'Oreo #3') is a tuxedo, and Fuff was white with black on her head face and tail but their odd facial markings were entirely the same and I knew Fuff had helped Big Kitty in his leap of faith. I have pictures. I have heard it said that your last cat picks your next cat. Human dna is 90% frequency strands, which means 'paranormal' is actually quite normal for humans and other animals, as humans are in fact animals themselves. Non-verbal communication is of great comfort to animals, who do not do so well when that soul connection is absent. Always touch hearts with animals- even wild animals, as all animals commune naturally.

My wife and I lost our dog after 9 years of having him in our lives. It was very traumatic he died in my wife’s arms it was hard for all of us. We couldn’t handle the loss we had 3 dogs and now we lost one too soon we just had to get another one. We bought another dog 2 weeks later we love ❤ animals. Many people say it’s too soon but they don’t understand how painful it was on us and our house felt so empty we needed another companion to gives us comfort and for us to love. I feel it’s not that we didn’t love our last dog because we did very much I didn’t sleep for several days I cried continuously and still do from time to time. We loved our last dog very much. We will always miss him and we know he wouldn’t be upset that we gave another dog a loving home. He will always be in our memories.

I lost my 12 year old yorkie, my soul dog, I was in total denial of her slow decline, I think in my mind I thought she would just be with me forever. Its been 2 weeks to the day today that we lost her suddenly. I told myself I wouldnt get another dog but I have a remaining bonded dog who was her submissive, her sidekick -- and that remaining dog that I have is showing signs of grief and loss including a severe panic attack during a storm one night (she never had issues with storms before) and it just devastated me all over again for her, and for our loss. I know my yorkie Juju was a lover of everything living, she didnt know an enemy and loved doggies. She wouldnt want us to be so sad. I know 2 weeks is very soon but I feel the dog that came to me was sent by her to come to me. I saw his photo online and I immediately knew. We're bringing him home this week and I am confident in my decision. Im not replacing her, Im just passing along her torch. Ill tell Brody all about her and how much I loved her, and we will love him and give him a safe forever home just as we did with my precious Juju.

Everytime I walked into the office, I would cry and that was back in May of 2019 and still miss her. My Clarise passed at the vet's office too, she passed of congestive heart failure, she passed in my arms, she was 16. It seems like I cried forever, good thing my son was with me and we both cried. I did have the cremated and they will both be burried with me when I go. Clarise passed in January of 2022. I miss both of them dearly.

When people say "I'll never get another pet", I tell them how can you be so selfish? Don't you know that when you adopt 1, you're saving 2? The one you adopt AND the one that takes Their place in the shelter. I know it's hard to open yourself up to another pet, but think of the LOVE you get in return.

My beloved cat dies last November 2021, and we as a family were in deep mourning, for me she was my world after a horrible divorce, and she was my constant loving companion! Two days ago, I kept feeling the presence of my dearly departed cat, heard her paws walking on my stairs. Etc, it was simply because I missed her., so much! Just then my daughter called to say a sibling pain of kittens much the same colouring as my old cat were available, but, one has the same name as my cat! This felt to me like a sign to adopt these cats needing a new loving home!Of course we cannot keep the same name, so I’ll change it, but I feel as though my departed cat didn’t want me to be alone! So I’m adopting ( never replacing) , these two needy cats, after exactly 3 months after my cat dies! I have a memorial garden for my old but munched loved and missed cat! Thank you for sharing your situation too!😻🐈🥰

Thank you for this video Dr Jones. This helped us a lot knowing our grieving processing is normal. We had to put our 8 yr old yellow lab to sleep a week ago because of hemangiosarcoma cancer. She had internal bleeding in the stomach and around the heart. She was completely normal a week earlier but the cancer spread so quickly the vet suggested we put her to sleep. It is so devastating for my wife and I. The hardest thing I ever did in my life. Our dog Madison was our entire world. We miss her every second of the day but we need another sweet dog in our lives so we just looking for now.

But now I’m finally at a place where I recognise that I will definitely adopt a cat or two but after sometime when I’m finally fully comfortable with getting a cat and know for sure I can take care of them and give them all the attention and not rush into it .

True no other will be her however my fiance really benefitted from our " new addition / not replacement" rescue cat . The new one picked me at the shelter and she's better than I deserve but just who my fiance needed to laugh and smile again . For that I'm grateful . I still miss you Minna if your watching me type this to this person . ❤

We offered to help anyone with a dog when our Alaskan Malamute Pinga died in Sept 27 2017. We felt we could not live without a dog as we loved the kind of routine dogs brought family life. In fact Pinga was family who could never be replaced but taught us ways to love another that could not be ignored. We found a sympathetic Alaskan Malamute breeder who allowed us to visit and spend time with her dogs. When a puppy, one of three became the only surviver of her litter we became involved with helping to socialise her as we waited on the list for our own forever puppy because Sojourner Truth was going to be the breeders dog trained to become a future therapy dog. We run a childcare business from home and work with children with special needs . The breeder recognised that we needed TLC support while we grieved the loss of Pinga and saw the benefits of exposing Sojou to new life experiences so she allowed us to take Sojou home from time to time. We also looked after another puppy who was given a forever home with friends who fell in love with her and had been grieving the loss of their dog. Sojou was extremely bright, friendly especially with children and was the perfect fit for our family. I begged the breeder to allow us to continue to be a part of Sojou's life and we now co-own Sojou with the breeder because she would one day like to breed from Sojou. The great thing is we wanted eventually to have 2 dogs and now we can have one of Sojou's future pups. Life without these wonderful creatures is no life at all and the magic like your Tulula is when they find you. Thanks for sharing such a difficult subject Dr Andrew Jones.

My Patterdale cross was diagnosed with leukaemia during the 2020 UK lockdowns, she passed, aged 9, over a year ago. I'm very devastated I miss her every minute of every day. Despite the earth shattering news that pushed our family & I to limits at times, with all of the medical adjustments we had to remember, I have not ruled out getting another dog. Another dog, another pet, cat, rabbit, whoever they may be, will never be a replacement for your lost loved one, I'll never stop grieving for Charlie. Something in me is saying she would want me to help another dog, so I have just asked a rescue centre a constructive question, I've just been reading about a dog of the same breed as Charlie was, even looks very similar, however the rescue centre's in another country

Now they are so popular, it seems hard to get one. This time after my last 2 go I will have to take a break because of my health. But I will be looking forward to adopting a dachshund puppy when I get well. I have never had a puppy and I am just so excited. Thanknyou for all that you do.

Thank you Dr. Andrew~ when my 60 lb. dog Taco passed from Cushing's disease. I couldn't stand to go back into the empty house. So I jumped the gun... went to the SPCA got a dog that was a boxer pit mix that looked a lot like my boy. Nursed her through kennel cough. When she felt better she started showing her true colors. Which was to bite me, and Corner me. Had to let the SPCA take her back. Wasn't her fault, she had a brain tumor. I know this is going to be a long comment, but I had to tell you. Now I was grieving two dogs. While sitting on the porch I glanced over at the screen door and the Lord showed me a black dog. I said I don't want to Black Dog Lord, I want one that look like my Taco. I was grieving some more, looked over, and saw this full grown black dog again. This happened 3 times... Said... don't want to Black Dog Lord. One day the SPCA called me back, and said some new puppies came in. I said oh Lord I'm too old to raise a puppy. Well I went anyway, I saw this little runt of the litter black puppy. The Lord said that's the one. Took her home, and now that's my Ashy girl. Amazingly enough when she grew up she looked exactly like the black dog by my screen door. Of course I had no idea she would turn out looking like that. You never know what you're getting with a mutt puppy. She is the most wonderful dog, picked out by Jesus himself. I guess what I'm trying to say... Please don't try to replace your lost dog. They all have different personalities. Don't be in a rush, she is now 8 years old, and I love her dearly. I know some people don't go for the God thing. But it sure worked for me. Telling you this, as a testimony because I know you believe. Just like Tula was sent to you. Love, prayers, and blessings to you, your family, and furbabies!💝

I think it's when you have that calm feeling you want a fur child back in your life, not done in so much as I want a replacement, because they are never ever the same as your fur child that passed. And some times people hope a pet will to be the same as the other one,. I'm a dog cat person, I can't be without a dog or cat for long, I'm lucky mine have been very long lived,. I can't talk about the ones passed without tearing up,. But that's who I am, they are forever in my heart. I do believe they have a spirit and one day we will be together again. Believe it's not the end in their passing, some bi ke teaching say they don't have a spirit, but they do because I have seen their spirit leave, hand on heart it is true

I lost my nine month old puppy this morning and I don't know what exactly caused it. We took her to the vet three days ago and they told us she was going to be fine and that nothing was wrong. Yesterday night, however, we found out that they gave us the wrong antibiotics. This made her sickness worse. We had another appointment for 9:00 , but she passed away 7:30 . How unlucky we were. I have learned to be a lot more careful about what vets to trust. Some do it more for profit as the one we went to, charged us $185.93 just for a short 10 minute check-up

Hi Andrew. Thank you for the video, we all love our pets like family and when they pass away it is very sad. My dachshund goes to the vet Saturday, I plan on asking them for different anti-inflammatory. I wrote down the one that you told me was better than rimadyl. Last summer I put compost soil around one of my baby trees for nutrients, of course she started eating the dirt. I assume it is because she is missing nutrients and the dog food that I feed her period last dachshund had anemia and started eating things that she shouldn't as well. I am asking for a full blood work exam at the Vets tomorrow so I will know if she is lacking nutrients. Thank you for everything you do for us animal lovers. Give Tula a kiss for me❤

So the thought of adopting another cat isn't appealing, I think it would make me feel worse. But it also feels sad the thought of never having a cat again. I am in a similar situation as well. We lost our beloved Opie (Chinese Crested Powder Puff) about 8 months ago I am still not over it as he was kind of my dog per say (Took to me the best). Your Video made me cry! My wife has been asking about getting a new dog for my 7 year old son to grow up with. My problem is we still have 2 older Cresteds one 14.5 and the other 13.5. Do you see any issue with bringing a puppy into the family with the older dogs? I just do not know how that is going to effect the older dogs that are slowing down. I am just scared the new puppy may push the older dogs over the edge. Thanks for any thoughts!!!

Is there any sort of doggie day care in your area where your dogs could be exposed to and interact with younger dogs/puppies? This would give you some idea of how well they would deal with it or not. Maybe even volunteer with your local shelter to foster a dog for a while. Just some thoughts. :)

@@chadfleming8234 You're welcome! Either way, they are both temporary situations so you can end them at any time if it's a no-go. :)

We had a pack of eight, two who were the parents and six who were their puppies. Over the years, they have been leaving us one by one as it has been over 10 years since we welcomed them into the family. This year, we lost two in one month: one to cancer where we were unable to get her in chemo becaise she had an open wound that would not close for another three months(snake bite+bad initial care from the emergency vet who refused to give us antibiotics leading to infection and resulting in a large necrotic patch that required debridement), the other to complications after surgery to remove a large group of tumors in her spleen. There are now three left, and they all have problems with their health since they're all the same age. I'm worried about my parents who have been blaming themselves (it was not their fault, just nature and time running out) but at the same time... I don't know how we could ever adopt another without feeling the grief of remembering the ones that have passed away. But if we don't, I fear that my parents would not be able to deal with an empty house. I didn't think I would miss them this much. After losing the first three I thought I would get used to it, but I came home for the holidays today and the house is so quiet...
