    Discuses have no particular environment other than the tank itself. Where they are located is adaptable to your situation. Discus can adapt to almost any environment as long as that environment has consistent elements of traffic, noise and your interaction with your fish. Maintenance, Water changes and feeding are all important activities that build trust. If you are netting your fish and scaring them more than necessary, each time you approach the tank your fish will be suspect about why. If you make the experience a good one you build trust. Plan long term for your fish so that they can continue throughout their life cycle to experience the same environment and not disrupt their life experiences and patterns. This is True with all Tropical fish but some more than others. Discus fish are in that category where great care in planning a safe and stable environment yields the best results. They are not that fragile, they just need your trust. Good Luck!

    Buying same size discus certainly works with domestics, but not with wilds as some geographical variants of the same species might be more aggressive than others. I've recently added a few small Tefe greens to my shoal of much larger rio Putumayo greens, but Tefe discus seem to be more aggressive and regardless of being smaller they now on the top of pecking order chasing away much larger Putumayo specimen.

    Thanks a lot made my mind clear now!! I am trying to get an idea for my 4.5 ft tank with only hardscapes . Just one query I am still not clear with the background as I like Black background or grey is it safe concerned with the peppering part of the fish.

  • @aquaticconceptsbringingwaterto

    @aquaticconceptsbringingwaterto

    2 жыл бұрын

    Peppering is greatly minimized when the majority of the tank is lighter in color. It can happen in certain strains of Discus regardless of what you do. I recommend you talk with a Discus Specialist or read articles on that subject and look at your fish very closely when purchasing to see if some of the lighter color fish have it around their faces when they are 4-4.5 inches in size. If they do it may be something that gets worse with age or it may be very limited. I avoid any fish I see that “peppering” starting at that size. Buy colors that are not know for that. There are also Domestic or Hybrid species that peppering has been breed out of them. Do your homework. Please like and subscribe and again thank you for the comment!

    Nice to hear from you I was wondering what happened to you? 33 Gallons is really not ideal not because of the size but because unless it is a mating pair they will not do well in a shoal of less than 5-6 and that tank would be to small! As far as the island in my office Discus Tank in that Video, the rocks are just stacked and the plants are just tucked between cracks and not even glued! I don’t glue plants if I don’t have to. I can give you the name of a breeder in Florida at Jack Wattley and he can ship you a breeding pair but they will not be cheap! Let’s think of another Centerpiece fish for a tank that size. Nice hearing from you and if you need any help Scaping that tank do not hesitate to ask. Please throw me a like! 👍

    This is a 75 gallon JBJ Ultra Clear Glass All In One Setup. I am Running two AquaTop Submersible Pump NP-306, With two Chambers of Sponge/ Seachem Purigen Sacks, (Your options on how much) 2- Sacks of Ceramic Bio material, 2 Water soxs that are washable and reusable, I also have a Aquatop Forza 9A UV External Canister that I have running as supplemental filtration in the back area. This just provides me with extra clean water and the UV gives me the ability to keep bacteria and parasites from taking up residence in the tank. I have no Carbon in the tank as I think it is not needed with enough filtration material to do the job. Also nice if you need to medicate not to have to worry about carbon. Sand is vacuumed once a week at second water change and is only a light dusting to cover the bottom. That way I can remove and replace after 3 months easily for a fresh look. My Lights are made by WRGB Full Spectrum Aquarium Light with Built-in Timer, Brightness Adjustable, for Fresh Water (50W/70W) I turn off the red and green as my plants do fine without the extra colors and it seems to keep the algae of any kind almost completely clean from the tank except a bit of build up on the glass that the snails take care of. The build on the inside is Mountain stone stacked (Design optional) , With 2 CaribSea Super Naturals Moonlight Freshwater Sand, 20-lb bags Anubias and Java Fern just tucked into the rocks not glued so it is easy cleaning. The wood is a large piece of seasoned Spiderwood broken and not cut to fit the tank with a natural look (Never Cut Wood or It Looks Manmade) 8 Discus Fish all the same size at 4.5" (one not as big at 4") My Clean up crew are 5 Julli Cory's, 1- Bristle Nose Pleco, 3 Siamese Algae Eaters and various Mystery Snails. I have also added 17 Black Neon Tetra for looks as well as cleaning any food that might get to the mid section of the tank. My lights come on at 8:00 am and go off at 4:00 pm My working hours. My water Temp. is a constant 86 Degrees with a digital heater and I keep a backup on hand. I change water 2 X per week at 25% each time. My Water Parameters are as follows and always stable. pH: 6.8, Water Hardness between 1° and 4° dKH (18 to 70 ppm), 0 Ammonia, 0 Nitrites and Nitrates at les than .10 ppm I like to feed 4-5 times a day a variety of frozen and flake or pellet foods. I feed more frequent small meals to keep the tank clean and nothing is left behind. I hope that helped you and you can maybe adjust a bit where you see I may have some differences that you might want to try. I hope you will both like and subscribe. Thank you!

    @@aquaticconceptsbringingwaterto The area where i reside...my tap water is primarily borewell water pumped out by huge pumps and distributed throughout the locality. So it's essentially hard...the Gh is high. Lots of dissolved solids. The probability, Kh is also high. Ph is also high. The iron content in the water is high. Is this water suitable for discus. New theory suggests..you AGE the water for a time period ( let the CO2 get released from the water for the Ph to get adjusted ) and let the water SIT for the desired consistency or chemistry ( declorinated water ) and preheat the water with in accordance with tank water temperature in WC schedule. If Kh is high adding buffer will not help because the Ph will swing back once again. So chemically trying to reduce the Ph will not be viable. Is this going to help or RO water...which the Ph can sometime crash if trace elements are not combined. WHICH ONE IS MORE BENEFICIAL FROM MY POINT OF VIEW?

    I have great luck with dark everything in a heavily planted tank, i dont think heavily planted tanks are the problem but there needs to be a large front area in which you feed, discus are very bad at eating and often pick the bottom for food they missed, its not the plants itself causing them to not be healthy its not being able to find the food because its to heavily planted. t really depends on the fish you are keeping. Darker heavily planted substrate is perfect for most fish with some exceptions. If you are raising Discus or Angels the lighter more sand like the substrate the better. They fish will not darken up or camouflage which gives them a better look obviously. Also a bare bottom tank for the Discus and Angels is always easy to clean. These fish require clean water and you will be able to see waste or uneaten food better and clean much easier.
