When installing a jack plate you’re setting the engine further back. If you look at how the water comes off the bottom of your boat it starts low and raises to the wake or crest behind the boat. The farther you set the engine back the higher you can raise it. You said about 2” in the factory in configuration. With your offset you may be able to raise it more like 3” and have great results.

Your right. I was able to raise it 3". It has helped my mph and hole shot, I have found with friends in the boat changing my prop pitch from 10p to 9p helps alot.

I've had my Vance JP similar to yours but in anodized black with black HDPE for over five years now. Still looks and works like brand new and it has exceeding all expectations. I would have no reservations buying another one of these for a small boat application.

Great video, very informative! A few key points though. For marking the holes on the transom, I would advise investing in a set of transfer punches. You can get a set from Harbor Freight for $12. Well worth the few bucks to make sure the holes are perfectly aligned with the jack plate! Also, you should always hold the bolt stationary and tighten the nut when possible. This is a good practice in general as it reduces stress and damage to the bolt as well as gives an accurate measurement when torquing the nut. However with the CA4200, or any sealant for that matter, on the bolts it is even more imperative as it could cause the sealant to not properly adhere and seal any voids. Just food for thought. Keep up the good vids!

I have the 7" for my Yamaha...its been great. But man, dont rely on those engine clamps...run some bolts through those clamp plates, it will hold it securely and also help protect against theft. Good job on the install man.

c.shoe - My 1232 boat has no trailer and the 6 HP motor lives on a stand in the garage. I deliver it to the water in the back of a truck, and therefore I must clamp it off and on as needed. You are correct to warn against relying on these clamps. I manage by checking them several times a day when out on the water. My brother-in-law had a motor come off while travelling along at a decent clip. It threw him out of the boat in 30 feet of water 100 yards from shore in November when the high temp for the day was mid 40's. He was dressed in insulated coveralls, hunting boots etc, which all got waterlogged and would have pulled him under had he not been wearing a PFD. The 25 HP outboard sunk, but stayed attached by the battery cables. There was no one around to help, and he had to swim it to shore, quickly build a fire, and get naked so as not to freeze to death. There was no cell service. Luckily he was a mechanic and had a few tools in the boat. He managed to get the motor back on the boat, get it started and get back to the ramp. The entire ordeal took over 3 hours in dropping temps. He was lucky to live through it. In other words - don't ever trust those clamps!

It's a CMC trim until very good unit I have one on my boat that's what made me put one on my grandsons I think you like that better

Darn, makes me wonder if other outboard companies have shaft sizes that would've fit without the plate. I've never seen one on a Jon boat but maybe those guys didn't care about mpg and speed. Looking forward to mph update!

Yes I saw a few Jon boat jackplate videos do it as well. But yeah I need those rpms to raise, I will be putting the speed test video out soon, have to redo it due to file corruption.

I just installed the same jack plate {Vance Manufacturing # JPL2410SB) on my AlumaCraft 1232 to accommodate my brand new Suzuki DF6 outboard and raise the anti-cavitation plate to even with the bottom of the boat. It worked great, and Vance Manufacturing was great to do business with.

@@fishingistherapy I never tried the new motor without the jack plate. It was obvious I needed it, so I just ordered the plate and installed it before I ever took the boat out for the first time. With the jack plate the anti-cavitation plate lines up perfectly with the bottom of the boat and it runs out fine, so I'm pretty sure I did the right thing. The jack plate is really nice.

Also the brace you put on the inside from left to right top bolts. Could you not have gone from top right to bottom right on same on opposite side to install brackets to all bolts?

Yes you could do it anyway you like I guess, but per the instructions, this was the way they recommended. To have more surface area I put the bolt on from the inside and also to avoid seeing the bolts sticking out, which doesn't look good in my opinion. Lastly putting them on from left right keeps the jackplate leveled, same idea as putting on a spare tire using the star pattern.

Looked for an update, did you ever get around to testing the boat after the jack plate was on? I'm installing this on my 14' boat and I had a similar situation where the cavitation plate was about 1" under the back of the boat and I added shims for 3/4", but just couldn't get it out of the water and could tell that was hurting mph and speed. Hopefully it was worth it! P.S. How do you like the 20 hp on the 1448? I have a v-hull currently, but the 1448 w/ a 20 seems like a nice setup!

I'm actually performing a speed test this Sunday if the weather holds, so the video will be out by next Friday. Also, I added a hydrofoil because I did not see the gains or lift out of the water to plane the front end that I wanted. I currently run a 9pitch prop to accommodate my heady load and 1 or 2 buddies, but I'm seeing 18-19.5 with a buddy. I am switching back to a 10 pitch prop because I have noticed my rpms are over 6100 on the 9p by myself only gets me 20-21mph with me not being able to run WOT. Also I love the 20hp on my 1448 setup just trying to get the front end to lay down and plane quicker with a heavy load. We will see how it works out.

Have you released the speed test video? I’m in a similar situation, looking to see the difference it made for you.

I haven't released the video yet. I gained about 2mph. But with my heavier load I usually run a 10p or 9p depending on load. Will add it to my list if content to get out asap.

I agree with you. If I would have known that measurement prior to, I would have got a jackplate from the beginning, but I still love their outboards!

Wonder if they sold you the wrong motor. This motor seems to me long shaft maybe the application should be a short shaft motor on the Jon Boat. Thanks

Thats a interesting point. They sold me this one because my transom is 20" and the long shaft is 21 inches.

ALL Jon boats have a transom that is 2-5" too short. Why do boat makers do this? I had the same issue and sold the boat. I got a 14ft mirrocraft and the trim plate is level with bottom of boat.

my 12 foot seanymph is a light wieght car topper and with a 9.5 evinrude back 5 inches when i reach back to pull the starter the transom is 6 inches to the water line ! the puget sound freezing cold mid summer water line in seattle. a 14 foot john with that 20 horse wont dip mutch at all your good tell you mount a 35 -40 then float pods ? i made my pods with 1/4 inch plywood and 2 inch foam alternating 4 times with 6 -10 inch carriage bolts compressing the layers to the transom then fiberglass over the top i drilled 1 inch holes to reduce lb. when there's no salmon the boat goes on the roof of my ford explorer to 4by up to lakes with no boat launch where Amanda and i catch big rainbows and cuts ! the seanymph fished like 25 lakes all over washington in my younger days its getting a second life with the blessing of Amanda in my life .pops has a 15 foot lund and a 23 trophy on bueis in front of his vashon island summer home the seanymph spent 20 years rowing out to the big boats but as time goes by the big boats spend more and more time on the trailer with pops in his 80s so the seanyph is back fishing the northwest providing therapy it gave my whole life i am 61 and i love my little boat ! Because I have a 21 inch transom and the outboard is a 20inch shaft. But the way the biat rides with weight and passengers on board is why I needed a jackplate.

@@fishingistherapy I went through the same thing, you buy the correct shaft length and it isn't always right for the boat and how it runs. The 20 shouldn't be to heavy at 95 lbs, but maybe the hull was designed for an even lighter 2 stroke? Who knows for sure, it can be tricky getting an engine dialed in on a boat with depth, trim, and different props.

Man, you said it well. I have been trying to get that sweet spot. But I know running a 9 pitch like I have to push a heavy load is costing me mph but I feel I need it to push me at atleast 19mph without being sluggish. Going to hammer out the speed test this Sunday.

That's all well and good but I think I would have spent my money on trim and tilt you get better performance out of your motor I just put one on my grandson's buddy's got the same motor same boat he gained five to six miles an hour faster

I gained a solid 2 mph. I think I still need to adjust it about 1inch more to get it to optimal height for the cavitation plate to riding right at surface level to gain a few more rpms and maybe 1mph. But I'm pleased with the jackplate.
