Young Virgins For Sale - The Controversial Bride Market of Bulgaria
Ойын-сауық
Every spring, the town of Stara Zagora in central Bulgaria hosts a controversial bride market where young virgins are paraded in front of suitors who bid on them. The market is the biggest annual get-together for Bulgaria’s 18,000-strong Kalaidzhi Roma clan, a subgroup of the Roma people who face constant prejudice and exclusion across Europe. Unable to live off their ancient coppersmith heritage, the constantly sensationalised bride markets are one of the last surviving Kalaidzhi traditions. To find out why these medieval-sounding markets exist in modern Europe, and how Kalaidzhi girls feel about being sold off, Broadly correspondent Milène Larsson travels to the village of Orizovo to spend time with a family with two daughters as they're preparing for the annual bride market.

As a Bulgarian myself seeing this truly hurts. Seeing these beautiful young woman being sold in the gypsy community is so unfair. The lack of government control lead to this result. They’re ruining their lives at a young age without having a voice. These gypsy traditions leads to uneducated generations, low income and tension between the Bulgarians and gypsy communities.
@davidsimeonov

@@contgoogle181 I completely agree about this generation. It is truly hard to find a good partner these days. But still these people are not objects to be sold. They have to have the choice to choose who they marry. You can see in the video these girls being in love with someone and being sold to some guy which who knows what kind of person he could be. And just because they’re virgins doesn’t mean that they won’t turn into “whores”. The fact that they marry someone who they don’t love will eventually result to cheating or deep depression. What about their kids? What kind of environment will they grow up in? And unlike them who won’t marry someone they love, you can. And you can look for the kind of girl you want.

Video at 0:45 mentions Kalaitchi tribe of gypsy people. The word 'Kalai" in Sanskrit means coating of Tin on brass or copper vessels. Maybe the forefathers of these gypsy people who originated from India did this particular work as profession. The art of kalai (kalhai or qalai) is the process of coating an alloy surface such as copper or brass by deposition of metal tin on it.[1] The word "kalai" is derived from Sanskrit word kalya lepa, which means "white wash or tin". "kalaya-lepa" in the chapter of cookery or "supashashtra" which means applying kalai on utensils. People practicing the art of kalai are called Kalaiwala or Kalaigar.[3] Basically, Kalaigars or Kalaiwalas are community craftsmen.

This is not as described by the narrator where women are oppressed by this tradition. This looks like a big Kalaidzhi family gathering and bringing their children together to get to know each other and if it suits them to get married. They do not sell themselves, the price of money is like an agreed dowry. The meeting that day also doesn't have to involve a couple, but rather getting to know each other between families and it could be continued later with a wedding. This is a good tradition compared to what happens in Western Europe, where couples live in the same house but don't get married, which frustrates women, especially when they are pregnant and have children.

@Seh Yun Han it's not infringing on human rights. This is their culture and it's their decision to change as they wish. Also you probably didn't watch the video. This isnt a real bride market. At this point the "bride market" is just a gathering of unmarried men and women who meet up. The idea of arranged marriages within a tribe is an ancient practice.
@sholomantian
4 жыл бұрын
@Seh Yun Han you're still stuck in a western liberal lense. In England this doesn't work because it doesn't fit the value system. "Human rights " is a western construct that tries to apply western values everywhere. If you want to understand the world better try to keep an open mind. They are not executing people here. They have arranged marriages. It's very much a tribal practice for them.

@Seh Yun Han bottom line for me is that we don't understand their culture, and their frame of reference or their history. We don't understand the complexity of how they feel about it or how modern they are at this point. There are many very bad things happening in the west that people suffer in. Not to compare , but we try our best and we make improvements. Same for them. They've changed a lot in the passed few generations.

Man is the head of the family to provide and protect, but it is the woman who runs the house, this is her domain and this is where she excels. We have this tradition all over the world for a reason. It worked for thousand of years and it works for these Roma people till today. I did not see that these girls were unhappy. In fact this market had an atmosphere of a party to it. Also boys have to work hard to earn money for the bride and it teaches them the value of money and hard work, something a lot of young people do not understand.

Oli B Female mutilation has also existed for years. Does that mean we leave it alone? Do a little research of the high level of abuse that exists in the Roma community. The men want virgins but they’re not. That is BS!
@szobione
4 жыл бұрын
@@Itsallaboutlove52 As if male mutilations aren't practiced anymore. Ask a Jew. As for the biological virginity, men do not possess it. They also have external genitals easy to keep in proper hygiene. Women on the other hand carry theirs inside and every time they sleep with a random man they acquire all sorts of bacteria and they carry them around. Thus it is safer for a man to marry a virgin woman and for the woman not to sleep around and carry shit from casual encounters. Pure biology. Also promiscuous women have trouble pair-bonding, a well established fact. Mother Nature did not mean for them to sleep around. Btw, my wife was a virgin when we met and she was in her mid-twenties and she was neither unhappy about it nor ashamed of it. And she is not Roma.

If you ask your average 16-year-old girl what she finds as desirable traits for a boyfriend, I suspect he would get considerably different answers than you would if you asked a 35-year-old woman what she finds as attractive or desirable traits in a husband. Also. If marriage is something like leasing a car; that is when you get tired of it, you get rid of that one and just get another one. That is going to set some criteria. If, however, marriage is a union of two individuals to be bonded together as one flesh and remain faithful and true to each other and each other ONLY; and both people presume the relationship is to last until death separates them, that would sets higher standards on the criterion of choice, wouldn’t it? The standard, biblical rendering of what are commonly called “wedding vows“, are very, very, serious words… Serious promises about very grave matters, AND - spoken while looking directly into the eyes of one’s significant other, prompted by one who fully comprehends the gravity of the words being spoken, in front of what perhaps is the largest and most unique collection of BOTH persons’ seperate friends and family, and most importantly, before God, qualifying it has a sacred oath.
It's painfully funny how this shows in my recommendations when I'm sitting in my room waiting for something like this happening to myself 💔
Kids : Dad , how did you met mom ? Dad : I bought your mom and I will sell you soon. Kids : Oh shit ! 🙄

Very low standards, i see.
It is funny how most women in this comment section here are looking down on these traditions yet end up traumatized and depressed when they live the yolo life with their cats at 40.
