@@coachc125 they would’ve been teammates Reggie got drafted in 1987 and Bias was up for the draft in 1986 they would’ve crushed the league by the early 90s they were too tall and versatile for other players man and they didn’t give up plays or turn down tough assignments like a lot of people don’t know Reggie wasn’t scared of guarding Jordan and he’s blocked a couple of his shots too. I can only imagine that match the Celtics vs Bulls from 1990 to 1993 it would’ve went down

Jordan was swept multiple times out of the first round of the Playoffs was because he lost to either Boston...a Multi-Championship Dynasty Team , and the Detroit Pistons...another Multi-Championship Team. Excuse Jordan and everyone else, if during the 80s their stood two Dynasty Teams stacked with Hall of Famers for each of them within the Eastern Conference considering from 1980-1990, 6 NBA Titles were won to the East during that stretch. You also act as if Pippen was "Amazing" right away...Jordan MADE Pippen become great, considering Pippens rookie season he averaged a whopping 7ppg...WOW, All-Star Stats right there folks. Last I checked, it took a Team to win the NBA title, not a One Man Show.

Looking back at this game now, I didn't realize Michael's greatness. I was busy with the Big East with Ewing, Chris Mullin (I was a St. John's fan) and Pearl Washington. For those who weren't around back then college basketball was a BEAST. There was also Ralph Sampson of Virginia and Akeem Olajuwon (and Drexler) of Houston just to name a few.

The days when US college players could dominate at the Olympic level

At barely 20 years old announcers goating my guy about his defense. Without his offense he could still win MVP. Dominating the game on both sides of the game and it jumps off the screen. Mf was relentless in a team construct. No other player ever touches the things MJ was capable of. They think athleticism is just being big and strong. Mj at 180 pounds was a menacing athlete. He was born to dominate this game.

Jordan was a defensive and ofensive beast even in college. (G.O.A.T.)

Len Bias was tough bro. He and Dominique Wilkins were similar players. Niq was always #2 for the scoring title. Bias and Niq were prototypical forewards of the day. Mid-range, Athletic, rebounding Dunkers. Bias and Nique were different because they did everything in traffic. Windmils in traffic in the Early 80s. Nothing like them since.

Bias was a better shooter than Dominique. By his senior year he could hit the corner 3 over any player, only caveat being there was no three point line. Bias would have been on another level. I watched a lot of Bias’s games back in the day.

The following season was Bias junior year. The jumper had expanded another 5 or 6 feet. The handle was improved and teams often doubled in hopes he'd give up the ball to a teammate. He was a force to be reckoned with. The first half of the 80s was the greatest era of college basketball. What a phenomenal time it was!

I agree. Teams were balling even before the 3pt line. The ACC was one of the 1st major conferences to use the 3 pointer, but only during the reg. season and ACC tournament. A lot of younger people dont know about Len Bias but he had game from day one. Could hit almost anything from mid range and could play above the rim too.

@Tedi L I am a Bias fan, but Bias was no Jordan. Bias wasn't particularly clutch, more power plus midrange and length vs Jordan's all-around athletic ability and wasn't all over the place as a defender like Jordan was.

By his senior year, Bias was the best I've ever seen. I've never seen a player imprive from year to year like Bias did.

Len would have been an All Star, but MJ showed glimpses of why he would become the best of all time. No doubt he heard the buzz about Bias and maybe he’s the best in the ACC and Michael as usual elevated due to a perceived rivalry and played out of his mind in this game defensively.

I remember watching this game as a kid after looking forward to it all week. This game was actually the tail end of a back-to-back for Carolina after dropping their first game of the year to Arkansas earlier in the week. Len Bias likely would have been a HOF player and not just an all-star. He was basically Dominique with a more consistent jumper, better handles and probably more strength for his age. Also, if he'd have gotten the chance to play with guys like Bird, McHale and Dennis Johnson his game would have become very polished pretty quickly and the Celtics may have had the edge on LA in '87, and Detroit in '88-90. Who's to say if they'd have still been in the position to draft Reggie Lewis but if so, it's safe to say that the Celtics may have disrupted some of those early 90s Bulls titles too. Just that alone would likely have affected MJ's greatest ever argument.

I saw mj play after 2nd retirement during pick up games. It was the same. He wouldn't even come out his jogging pants. I realize he was just born with the speed and jump. He only retired because he couldn't heal up over night like he used to. It would take like 3-4 days for heal to heal up. But once he was feelin good, it was the same.

UNDERRATED comments about MJ's defense by the broadcast analyst . The analyst is spot on when he said MJ's defense alone is enough to win him MVP honors.

This was a young Bias vs Jordan ready to go pro. Bias was 6'8" and Jordan was really 6'5". Within the next two years Bias got bigger, stronger and unstoppable. A better friend circle and had he lived, Bias' ceiling was still very high.

I’m 51 yrs old here in September 2022. I remember watching MJ as A kid and I watched his whole career. Look at how MJ basically already had everything. Like at 1:15 baseline move, catch with back to the basket, jab step turnaround jumper. The midrange J, the defense, I mean he was showing a little bit of EVERYTHING. And listen to the of the cuff comments from the commentators on his overall play and athleticism. And then MJ in the interview- so humble when he answered the questions.

I from the tarheel state, even I knew about Len Bias when I was a toddler. Baltimore and Maryland areas are some tough spots to grow up in. God bless you if you still there. Everytime I go up there, I have to check myself. I get the same feeling when I go to NY, durham, newark, DC and baltimore; watch the shadows.

MJ was so deadly from both ends of the court. Even then, there was no question that he would take the NBA to a higher level.

Jordan’s competitive nature on full display. I imagine that Len Bias deservedly was getting a lot of hype coming into that game and Jordan was intent on showing that he was superior. MJ was just incredible. I do believe that Bias would have had a hall of fame NBA career if he had lived.

Bias, absolutely! He would have taken the baton from Bird. As he grew, he would have become even bigger and stronger. He was also a smart player. And, you can't teach the "coil" that he sprung with his body. I really can't think of a great comparison, but he may not have been as good as Jordan, but a perennial 1st team all-star.I was heartbroken myself.

Nah college don’t mean anything. Maybe if he played this well in the G-League or overseas. Really though he’d be lucky to be half as good as the Bias kid. The NBA is a BIG Man’s league and Bias looks like a total STUD! He’s gonna be great if he keeps his head down and 👃 clean. I doubt Mike Jordan will even be picked in the top 3 of the daft. Well maybe if a desperate team like Chicago gets the 3rd pick but they’re a terrible franchise and has never won a championship so I wouldn’t worry about them at all.

They would've definitely had the best of the lakers that decade had bias been there. And the '90s would've been a war zone if bias had lived and stayed healthy of course. I still see jordon winning multiple titles but i also see bias winning in both those decade's also. He was just that good already, plus on a stacked team?. Oh my goodness. Bias was like a mesh of LeBron James, Sean kemp, Wilkins, Grant hill, except with better footwork and low post. Plus great offensively and defensively. The man could do it ALL. And at 6'8. Keep in mind that there were doubts about drafting Jordan because the thought at the time was that you had to build a franchise around a center. When the Bulls drafted Jordan third, the GM was disappointed that they didn't have a better option of a 7-footer. He said they would just have to "make due" with Jordan and hoped that he could be a good role player, LOL.

Fortunate to see Len Bias as a Celtics invite in preseason practice in Marshfield Ma high school. Place was packed and standing on a table I saw this guy fly and dunk over big Greg Kite. I said who is that…some guy yelled, “Len Bias!” Damn.

Len bias scored as much as Jordan. Except jordan was jordon he also had a year on him and was on a stacked team. M.j. at that point was already an n.c.a.a. title winner. But Scary part is bias got even better and by '86 he is drafted by that elite Celtics team of the '80s. But tragedy struck as we all know unfortunately.. Which Altered the series of event's to what we know today.

MY TWO FAVORITE college players of all time. I went to Maryland when Bias was there, attended all the games. What “could’ve been” with Lenny Bias just really hurts. Bias was changing into a phenom right before our eyes (and that is a huge understatement). If only.

Whats really funny is I played against Len and his brother Jay (and with) in pick up games in College Park. Then we all went to the Mc Donalds after the games. Gatlin was there all the time too. Its was on the courts outside under the lights like way back in the campus.

Len was nice. Such a tragedy. He reminds me of a Dominique, raw, super Athletic. Mike was just different though - even to this day no player IMHO is as smooth / acrobatic / skilled / explosive.

Mj def the most complete perfect basketball player that’s ever lived. Physically no one has that next level speed and hang time. Mentally no one has had that drive he had that truly made him the best ever. It’s hard for me to even watch the nba without him. He was true greatness. No one has that in the league now. Kobe tried because he stole all his moves /idolized him but that’s the closest he still didn’t have it but close

I'd never seen anything from Len Bias but read that he really could challenge MJ. Based on this sole game, not even close.

Development wise, Jordan was a year older here. That's a monumental difference maker for an elite athlete. Len obviously never could've challenged MJ to a draw, even if both players went toe to toe at their hypothetical maximum in their mid 20s. But that doesn't take away from the superior NBA talent Bias had, and the superstar potential that likely would've come to be, had Bias survived that encounter with trafficer-grade cocaine.

If Kenny Smith hadn't got hurt that year,they would've at least made the Final Four UNC didn't have alot of depth that year 2 1st team all- Americans and lost in the swee 16 to Indiana ,3 losses that year in a total of 7 points

I used to think that when I was younger As bad as I hate to admit it they may have come up a little short in the Final Four Georgetown was tuff on defense I hate to admit this also but they barely got by Dook twice in the regular season and wound up losing to them in the semi finals of the ACC tournament I misspelled Duke on purpose of lol Indiana D'd up on them in the Sweet 16

Man I used to watch Michael play in college and then be so excited to go work on my game. So lucky I got to see live at the 84 Olympics and play his Rookie season in the NBA. He is the GOAT 🙏🏀❤️

There is no comparison. Jordan highlights in COLLEGE are better than certain players NBA career. 50-50 offense and defense. The perfect player. Rest In Peace Len. He would’ve been an all star easily. Great upload.

Len Bias was really good. But Michael was clearly the best player on the court. He dominated on both sides of the ball.

I am a Jordan fan and followed him in college and through the pros. I will say this having watched both of these men when they were in college. Len Bias was all that and more. He was just as good as Jordan was in college. The highlight reel does not give Bias justice. This man gave it just as Jordan. I was excited to see him go to the NBA knowing he was going to give Jordan a run for his money. He is having witnessed his work in college is the only person I can say could have been even better than Jordan and I am a great fan of him. You would have had to see this man to understand what I am saying. Hats off to Len Bias and those great Maryland teams of that great era of college basketball in the ACC.

Great content. The 1980's era of college basketball was so phenomenal, you got to see all of the great players developing before they hit the NBA.

I agree. That was an era where players stuck around for at least two or three years in college and often played deep into the National tournament. That level of experience made things a lot easier back then for GM’s. Well usually, Portland still couldn’t figure it out as they selected Sam Bowie over MJ. 😊

Thank you for sharing this video. A lot of us did not see Michael Jordan at college time. What I see here is really phenomenal. The fondamentals, the little gaps that he sees and make him always so different from the other players. He was certainly a very smart worker. I still would like to meet him in person, to feel how deep he is involved in what he does. He is very inspiring. And Len Bias would have been a very great player too!

MJ heard that Len Bias was "The Stuff" and took it personal, LOL!!!

All respect to Len Bias, I'm sorry that he ended in such a fashion. But let's be realistic, man, he and all others weren't even close to talent that Jordan had. Back then, he was already complete. He had all the moves already, he had defense like no other, and above all, he was athletic freak out of this world.

Agreed, people hype him up because he was the second pick and died around draft day but let’s be honest I’ve watched a lot of his college games and the guy was a good athlete and had a good midrange game but he had bad footwork, mediocre handle of the basketball and was an average defender. The guy wasn’t in Jordan’s league and I don’t think he was even a better player than Reggie Lewis

I said what I said about Len bias, maybe playing with bird would’ve made him a better player but this whole projection that people have created about the career Len bias would’ve had in the nba is nonsense when he still had some very noticeable flaws in his game coming out of college

This is the comment I've been looking for. My eyes just don't see a equal or better talent then Jordan. I think the Len Bias hype train has definitely been in constant over drive when they talk about his talent and how its comparable to MJ's at the time and what he could've been once he was in the NBA.

Although we will never know I’d like to believe Len Bias would have been in that NBA All-Time Great category. He was the most exciting player in not only the ACC at that time but in the entire country. Horribly sad story!

Jordan was like a wolf on defense. Other guys would get sat by the coach for going for those steals and blocks. Its hard to recover so much ground.

Thompson was phenomenal in college and helped beat UCLA and Bill Walton 80-77 in double ot in the 1974 Final Four before going on to win it all. Who presented Jordan for induction into Naismith Basketball HOF? Yup his boyhood idol David 'Skywalker' Thompson.

Whenever I see a Len Bias video, my heart breaks (because of his passing) and I also cringe... cringe at a lot of comments that Bias was/would have been equal to (or greater) than MJ. I LOVED watching Bias. Incredible player/athlete, jumps out of the gym, quick, strong like a bull, very good range on jumper, good rebounder. HOWEVER he was an average defensive player at best (career average 0.6 steals, 0.7 blocks), and was never able to take his team past the round of 16 in 4 NCAA tourneys. He probably would have been a HOFer in the NBA. As a Lakers fan, I was literally in fear when the Celtics drafted Bias. And being Bird's teammate (and seeing his work ethic) would have helped his game tremendously. So I'm glad I don't see many comments in this vid about Bias being MJ's equal. RIP Len Bias! 🙏

MJ had a much better team around him than what Bias did and in this game Jordan was older and they were at Carolina which in the college game is a huge advantage.

You do know bias an already talented player all around waa going to become part of arguably one of the greatest teams of ALL TIME...The 1986 Celtics. A team even jordan could never beat. Len was going to be part of that team. Can you imagine the kind of impact and influence it would've had on an already talented player? I see bias winning a title with them that decade in the '80s especially, since bird probably wouldn't get injured playing so many minutes, so he get's to stick around longer. And As for the '90s if bias stayed healthy of course, who knows what would've really happened, had he lived. Maybe, Jordan still wins his title's, or that changes, with boston staying around for a little longer. All, i know is the east would've been an even crazier war zone had all that happend. But we'll never know now. All because of this one night of partying and making one tragic costly mistake.

Just look at the conference records in the beginning. The ACC was LOADED back then. I remember watching this game live.

First, this is a FANTASTIC post! Thanks for sharing. Second, it almost hurts to watch this given the "what if?" aspect. I am a long time NBA fan and Bulls fan (45+ years) and Jordan is the best player I've seen (never saw Wilt, Russell or Robertson play and I didn't see Jabbar in his prime). That said, I always thought Len Bias would have been great. How great? Not sure, but he had a chance to be very, very special, IMHO. Think of their respective teams going at it in the NBA - would have been awesome. And the Celtics' history would have changed as well if Bias was able to give Bird and McHale a break as they aged. Anyway, great post. And, btw, the quality of this video is great. That, coupled with the Enberg/McGuire broadcast team with so many great insights - this was college basketball at its best during my lifetime.

1) Michael Jordan was not only athletic but he was so efficient! 2) MJ's passes were on point! 3) Len Bias had a sweet jumper for a big fella! 4) Bias was insanely athletic to be a big. 2 of the most athletic players of that generation 💯

Jordan & Bias played against each other four times. The first two were in 1983 when Len was still coming off the bench, playing limited minutes. The last two were in 1984, and this was the 2nd where Jordan scored 25 & Bias had 18. Their previous contest has become the more famous one b/c Len (24 points) scored three more than MJ (21) and the latter ended the game w/ an iconic cradle dunk at the buzzer. Though according to stats gathered by uploader starks23, the rest of the categories were dominated by MJ w/ 12 rebounds (Len had 4), 2 blocks, & at least 4 steals. Regardless, two games between two starters hardly qualifies as a rivalry. Bias would go on to record similar senior year stats as Christian Laettner.

Len Bias was my fav player in college...what a physical specimen, athlete, & scorer! I couldnt wait to see him in the NBA! The day the tv flashed across the screen Len had passed away after the shock I couldnt stop crying! What a tragedy, this gifted kid was taken away so soon, till this day it still hurts me.

That play late would have started a fight in today’s game but mike just shook the defender’s hand for contesting the dunk attempt
