I make a point to see at least one of my boys every year in person (have exceeded that goal every time). Phones have made it easy for my generation; I always think about how tough that must have been for the Marines who came before. I can't imagine going through WW1, WW2, or Vietnam with someone then losing contact as life takes its turns.

About 50 years ago I went to a Navy Aviation School. About 1/3 of the class were Marines and the camaraderie between them was on a higher level than the sailors. I used to run 3 miles by myself on Saturdays for fun and sometimes would pass them as they ran in their group as they were required to do it. They invited me to run with them after seeing me a few weeks by myself. They called me their Swabby Brother.

"We few... we happy, happy few. We band of brothers... For he that sheds his blood with me this day shall be my brother, be he ne'er so vile. This day shall gentle his condition. And gentlemen now abed in England today shall think themselves accursed they were not here. And they shall hold their manhood cheap, whilst any speaks that fought with us upon this St. Crispin's Day!" -- Wm. Shakespeare, 'Henry V' Act IV, Scene III I hope the entire Enderle family will accept the regrets and condolences of an old US Army cavalryman. A respectful tip of the Stetson on your loss. And Jake, some advice: 1. Head on swivel. Stay alert and stay alive. 2. Listen to your NCOs. They know shit. 3. And don't get married until you hit E6. Trust me on that one... 😉
