Young Homeless Woman Shares about Surviving on Venice Beach Los Angeles

Dakota is 29 years old. She has been homeless off and on for 10 years. This time for four months. Dakota has no ID so she cannot receive welfare. Without identification, she can't leave Los Angeles even if she wanted to. Most of us cannot even imagine what this young woman has to do to survive the streets of Venice Beach every single day.
As a young homeless woman, Dakota tries to make the best of it. She left an abusive relationship. Domestic violence is a leading cause of homelessness.
I am spending this week in Venice, California learning about local homeless issues by talking to homeless people and local residents. One thing that's really struck me about the Venice homeless community is the number of people who have adapted to a life of homelessness.
Most people when they first lose their apartment or place to live, try to better their situation. The problem is homeless services doesn't make it easy for people to get off the streets and there are not enough resources to help people. Over time, people get used to homelessness. Learned helplessness sets in. They stop trying to change their lives and develop a survival mentality. The beach culture of Venice ends up becoming a lifestyle. Many of the homeless people I talked to don't ever see a path out of homelessness.
WE MUST CHANGE THAT! We need to be able to help people when they first end up homelessness long before learned helplessness sets in.
Venice is building what's known as a Bridge Housing. It's a huge step in the right direction but we need more housing and homeless shelters for people. If you'd like to learn more about Venice's Bridge Housing visit: BridgeHomeVenice.com

About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as KZread, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

I was homeless for about 4 months, and the local meth addict took me in, gave me a tent and would feed me if I didn't have food. some people judge too much, but that "lowlife" cared more about me than the "succesful" people.

Seems if this lockdown continues a lot of ppl will find out what it's like. It's not something I would wish on anyone. Perhaps a vision I have had of communities forming where tent cities and rv/cars are formed where if you're homeless you can come and start a life again. Before I became homeless I knew it was coming and started trying to help. I got ripped off repeatedly. I pray about it every day and have vision of parcels of land where the disadvantaged will find safe haven. No one will make them move if they nap in their bag or on a blanket. All will contribute to the community to have pleasant grounds and to expand as the need arises. Anyone with me on this? I'm ready. Let's get this started before the numbers skyrocket. It's going to happen pretty soon I reckon. A 5 acre piece of land is a good start. Get a business plan/license and start taking donations!!! Who's with me?

I was living out of my van in the Venice area. It can be sketchy and I am a guy. I was so lucky to have a van where I could lock up my stuff and sleep in peace, with my piece under my pillow. I got into CSUDH and did the homeless thing in front of that university while I finished up my degree. Got myself off the street but it was a mix of luck and hard work, mostly luck. Lucky to be a guy, lucky to have a van, lucky to get into school and lucky be able to pull financial aid and student loans. Now I am in debt and working. Modern serf, indentured to the system. Just a few paychecks away from being back on the street. It is a thin veneer that separates many of us working stiffs from the homeless.

...........in 2009 I was shit canned from my job. I did not know how things would turn out. I went to SSDI and applied. I went to the VA and asked for their help. Luckily, they both came to my assistance. But with that all said, I never once think that I am secure. Not even the fact that I own 3 homes. Not fancy homes at all. Kind of run down actually. I don't rent anything because I don't want the headaches. I bought a small camper 2 years ago in the event the shit hits the fan. I think it's going to. I keep my tow vehicle filled with fuel. I have 10 extra gallons in my garage. That's enough fuel to get me into Canada. I would load up my cats, grab all the canned goods I have on hand, my generator, long guns, space heater(s), books and be on my merry way. I would survive without being a panhandler. I know I would.

It's so heartbreaking that just one mistake can lead to a lifetime of consequences. When your heart is broken it's so hard to find self worth and the energy to try from scratch. I've noticed many homeless have a problem staying in victim status. The key is to forgive yourself, forgive others and ask God everyday for the strength to move forward in the right direction. If you have addiction issues start with rehab to get off the street. Go from there. No man is going to save you. You have to save yourself. God bless you sweetheart. ❤️

I've been homeless. Being homeless in Venice isn't like being a bum anywhere else. There actually street performers on Venice that make it an awesome place. 80 percent of the performers out there are from that street element. Some people just don't function well in normal society. "Go to work, pay your bills, soccermom etc. This doesn't mean there not proper humans. They just might have never been taught correctly and in some cases have mild or severe mental health issues. edit: invisible people is also one of my favorite channels and a real cool way to use this platform for good. ✌

I snuck into Arroyo Seco park at night for months, using trees to block the cop chopper thermal vision so I could get to my spot pull my Coleman popup tent with bedding already inside out of it's covered hole and set it up in a good cover area right by the hole. It was 75yards north of the archery range, off the trail, just hang a right into the brush. Pasadena had the best food outreach in all of LA. Malibu was the best area though, Bluffs Park a mile up the road from Ralphs.

Life is hard. I feel exhausted most of the time. I work hard, go to work everyday even when I’ve gotten three hours of sleep. It’s not easy, but it’s something I have to do to be able to have food to eat, a roof over my head and a bed at night. I never wished for it, I just did it. I didn’t have a job for four months once and put in over 500 applications and went to 25 interviews before I was finally hired. During that time I was in bad place mentally I thought there was no hope for me and although not similar to being homeless in anyway, the feeling of hopelessness is what these people feel. But as long as you’re trying then know that there is hope.

Im sure shes well aware of her mistakes, she doesnt seem crazy or anything, so she literally deserves nothing but support because that is the ONLY way she will ever improve. No one hardly ever hears someone say something horrible about them, then goes "u know what U RIGHT, ima change right now" But , people do change their entire lives when they have SUPPORT and unconditional LOVE .....

Watching a day slowly tick away to finally go to sleep in a tiny back seat. Before that I slept in the park I use to fish at when I was a boy. That was scary. There are a Lot of people wandering around at night in the riverbed. Under the bridges. I am fine now with alot of hard work. Every story is different. Drugs was not a play in my situation. My business went under and I lost everything. When you have nothing it is amazing how those good friends turn their backs on you. Be kind to each other. Count our blessings as small as they may be.

Bless her that must be hard not seeing your kids. People judge the homeless so badly, but I always see broken humans that need love and support and just do not have it. With the wealth in this country there should be no homeless yet its astounding how many there actually are. There has to be a bridge to go from the people that want to help, directly to the homeless. There are alot of people that can and want to help. We need to make this happen somehow. Im working on ideas, because I literally lose sleep over homeless people, it makes me so sad for them. We are all children of God, no one is better than the other, the homeless, broken people mean just as much to God as the celebrities living in their mansions. No one life is worth more than another. All these homeless people are someone's child. And we are all children of God.

People are sick and twisted . You never know the real situation but it could’ve been a situation where she had to leave to save her own life and wanted to come back for the kids . I personally couldn’t leave my kids but I’ve been in situations where there’s no way I could get four kids safely and myself out the house . Especially when he’s came in drunk in the middle of the night . Kids in different rooms - never know what people are going through . Just saying .

He did unspeakable things to me, I was battered and abused and terrified... long story short, I got my child and got the hell out of there and never looked back. I had no money, nothing, just the clothes on my back. I would not and could not leave my child with such an abusive man. She could have called the cops, after she got out and got the kids then, the kids would have told the cops what he was like.. There’s is definitely more to this story. But she is now homeless and I do feel compassion for her❤️ nobody is perfect!💯

Maybe at the time she was abused into believing they were better off without her. Does anyone know what emotional and verbal abuse can do to a person especially a young mother? Dont judge what u haven't intimately experienced. Even if you have everyone is different.

The thing that tells a part of every story is at the end when asked what 3 things they would like or change. First was someone to cuddle, maybe first should be the children left behind.

what she said in the end: "homelessness is a home for the lost that come here to find themselves" is the most eyeopening thing about homelessness i have ever heared. Now it was worth bingewatching this channel for 10 hours having negative thoughts about homeless people.

Yes, but she wants them to be there, with her, living rough? I can't get past that. She wants to "go out every night"? And occasionally tell them that she loves them? That's no way to raise children with love.
