Homeless Woman Sleeping Rough in London after Domestic Violence

Lavane was married in an abusive relationship for ten years. The last time the domestic violence was so bad Lavane was hospitalized. Upon release, Lavane went home, grabbed her dog, and has been homeless sleeping rough in Central London ever since.
Please know that Lavane is safe from her partner. As a rule, we never post interviews with domestic violence victims unless the person is safe. Sadly, although Lavane is not at risk of further abuse from her partner, she is still sleeping rough. Rough sleepers face all kinds of danger every day, and it's especially hard for elderly and women sleeping rough.
Lavane's dog is her life. Lavane says she would never be able to survive homelessness if it wasn't for her dog. Sadly, the London hostels (UK term for homeless shelters) that allow pets are all full. Like many homeless people, Lavane would rather sleep outside than separate from her dog.
While recording this interview, a woman came up to Lavane, scolding her for having a dog outside. The woman was obviously more concerned about the animal's wellbeing than Lavane being homeless. I love animals and currently take care of my mother's dog, but I don't think I will ever understand how some people care more for pets than humans. And if you're one of the people who care more for a dog than a homeless person, then let's get both inside. Housing ends homelessness for both people and their pets.
Lavane survives by food and soup runs in Central London and begging for money. She says some regulars come and bring her blankets and dog food. There's lots of controversy over public feedings. Many homeless service providers are against homeless people getting food and sleeping bags, saying the charity enables them to be homeless, but the real truth is people need to survive. Since there are not enough shelter beds, housing, or support services, we cannot just leave people to die outside.

About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, a living wage or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Each year, our groundbreaking educational content reaches more than a billion people across the globe. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

I was on the streets for 3 years until March of this year. 2 and a half of those years was with my dog that I rescued from abuse while I was out there. People often told me I shouldn't have her because "I couldn't provide for myself, how could I care for my dog?" Even though I always made sure that she never went without her needs and she always came first. I did the same things as this lady, I took advantage of the resources around me and I panhandled to make money to care for my dog and I as well. Many people only stopped by because they were asking about my dog having food or something, many people made fun of and yelled at me too. Every day I was made to feel less than human. My dog is my entire world, she gave me a purpose and a reason to continue on every day when I had nothing. She kept me safe from predators. She saved me as much as I saved her. Now by the grace of God we both live indoors in time for the winter and she is as loved as she ever has been. I hope this woman and her dog find housing together soon as well. No one deserves to live on the streets being judged and belittled. I truly feel for her. ♡

@Heather mf Very glad you and your pup are okay now. Many times pets are the only source of love and also protection for homeless. It is a small % of traveling kids & homeless that use pets to get more money and abuse them. It gives all the homeless who love their fur babies a bad rep 😞

Listening to her shivering voice from the cold is heartbreaking! My cat is my lifeline so I totally understand where she is coming from - I feel the same way about my cat, I could never in a million years leave him behind. If I had a choice to live in a million dollar house without my cat, I wouldn't take it. I wouldn't in a million years leave my cat behind. When I go for a weekend trip, I've had friends tell me, just leave the cat food and water while you are away. I tell them NO! My cat is very social and is very dependent on me and leaving him home for the weekend would traumatise him. I once put my cat at a pension for a weekend, and my cat didn't drink or eat. Since then I always make sure my cat is at a friends house where he feels comfortable and where I know he is safe.

Michael G Algerians are influenced by Islam. The quran orders wife beatings. sura 4:34 They have that type of "culture" brainwashed by their fanatic religion. True story: My brother in law' s brother works for the police force. He lived in an apartment and every day he would hear the screams of this Muslim woman living next door. One day he knocked at the door, the woman had bruises on her face. He asked her who was beating her. She would refuse to talk and kept accepting the abuse. She even would mention that was "Allah " ' s will. Look up statistics, medical journals and pew research on Islamic treatment of women. An animal has a better life than women.

@Bob Bobbertson Helping others is what good people do regardless if they're in your city or not. A lot of people do both- they help people in their own city & outside their city. People donate to starving children & animals all over the world, etc. The bottom line is if everyone gives it would make the world a better place. I find it hard to believe that you do anything for anyone based upon your attitude. You seem to lack compassion & empathy as a human being.

@Bob Bobbertson Also people need BOTH charity & income when they're homeless! Duh! You try working while homeless. First of all who will hire a dirty, homeless person who smells? Nobody! But if given a few months rent so they can get into a safe home & clean themselves and take care of their basic needs, then provide job placement, that's what would end homelessness. There are people who are drug users & alcoholics but there are others who just fell on some hard times and if given a chance, they'd be able to become productive members of society once again!

This is a reason why I woudln't want a pet, if you ever become homeless or have to move, it is very hard to bring the pet. I don't see why a landlord would refuse a sweet little dog like that. A lot of places make you pay high pet rent and deposits and insist on expensive vet visits. It seems people used to mind their own business more and let others live their lives. Now everything you do is so controlled.

Hygge Musings - Would we as fellow "human beings", like to be treated like that? Regardless if mankind is demising in values and compassion, which is evident in this video, I believe in treating other human beings as I would like to be treated. With dignity and respect for their welfare as I would my own or yours. Otherwise we become "no better" than those "bad" uncaring people. It could be us or a loved one on the streets - tragedy and adverse circumstances can strike anyone. Would animals in that circumstance be more important with humans being less equal of deserving compassion then? No. We need to put ourselves in their shoes. It is not my or anyone else's place to judge this woman. She is a fellow human who deserves the dignity of a roof

@@who798 There is no indication that she uses drugs. In fact she says in this video that there are OTHER homeless people who DO use drugs, which is an indication that she does NOT. There is NO REASON To make an assumption like that about a person whom you do not know. Would you like someone making a statement like that about YOU for no reason?????
