Homeless woman died shortly after this interview. Her death could have been avoided.

***This interview was taped April 6th. Catherine died sleeping outside homeless and alone on April 30th.
Catherine's story hits close to home in several ways. I know Catherine. We've been friends for over four years now. It's always broken my heart that she is out on the streets, and it's extremely frustrating she was housed and then kicked back out onto the streets for smoking cigarettes. But what really bothers me is that her only hope to get off the streets is having her hips operated on so then she can just die in a board and care facility.
Catherine was an RN. Because of a bad marriage and lack of jobs, she found herself trying to survive on welfare. GR, or general relief, barely pays for food much less housing, so she ended up in a homeless shelter.
I first met Catherine while I was working at a winter shelter four years ago. She is brutally honest, and I like people that "tell it like it is"! Catherine is one of those people who just slipped through what we call "gaps in the safety net".
A former outreach partner of mine worked very hard to get Catherine into housing. That alone was nothing short of a miracle since Catherine keeps getting turned down by SSI. She was housed by a partner agency and all seemed to be going good. I wish I had a photo of her apartment to show you. Not sure where Catherine found everything, but she decked her apartment out good! She made it a home!
Then the building owner sold the building and everyone had to move. This partner agency relocated Catherine in to a nonsmoking building, which is kind of dumb since Catherine is a long-term smoker, and quitting smoking is harder than quitting heron. Let's be real here, homeless people smoke, so housing a homeless person that smokes in a nonsmoking building is "dumb in a no dumb zone". I remember the day Catherine was placed back out into the streets. She left all the cool stuff she acquired to make a home and just walked out. And people wonder why some homeless people have attitudes. For all she has been through, Catherine has earned a lot of grace.
For a while she stayed in a temporary shelter, and then was transferred to the winter shelter, and now she sleeps outside! SHE SLEEPS OUTSIDE!
Truth is, Catherine should not be homeless. It's just ridiculous that she was housed in an apartment that clearly didn't fit her needs. Just like in so many other people's situations, the "system" failed.
It is completely unacceptable that people like Catherine, and there are many, go through the homeless services system over and over and over just to return to the streets! It is completely unacceptable that Catherine's only hope now is to have a major surgery so she can be placed in a nursing home! It is completely unacceptable that several homeless service agencies have given up on Catherine!
Please share Catherine's powerful story with everyone you know. My hope is that somehow this video will get seen by the right people who will take action to help fix the broken homeless services system. While we say "whatever it takes", the real truth is people just like Catherine die on the streets everyday! With the boomer generation reaching the senior years we are going to see a lot more people like Catherine living without adequate housing and support. If we cannot take care of one senior woman in fifteen years time we're in a whole lot of trouble next few years.Distributed by OneLoad.com

All of your comments remind me of the famous quote by Jiddu Krishnamurti. It goes like this, "It is no measure of health to be well adjusted in a profoundly sick society". I have some experience of helping homeless people and I can honestly say that the more empathetic and enlightened a person is as a human being the higher the chance that s/he will be discarded by society. Probably because enlightened empathetic people do not possess the capacity to play the game that society deems necessary for survival.

She is probably an ungrateful person who won't contribute or follow rules of the people trying to help them. I seriously doubt her kids haven't tried to help her. You cannot help stubborn people who won't help themselves. I know a lot of people in situations like this because they REFUSE to get along or respect the people who try to help them and it becomes impossible to help them because they won't help themselves or do their part to cooperate. I've tried helping many people just like this and they take advantage of people who pity them. Some people are toxic and reap what they sow. There are people who make a living conning others who feel sorry for them and use a sob story to milk sympathy just so they can take advantage. She admitted to efforts of assistance that she just complains about and sabotaged in order to smoke. Her family is probably tired of trying and being taken advantage of by an ungrateful person who won't contribute to their own recovery.

God allows us to suffer the consequences of our wrong attitudes and actions to motivate us to change our ways. If you continually refuse to be honest with yourself and hang on to your stubborn pride instead of taking responsibility for your own life, you choose the consequences of your actions. God has infinite Grace and mercy but he's more worried about the state of your soul than your temporary physical comfort and convenience while on earth. Perhaps they had to make a decision based on the safety and emotional well being of their children. Just the smoking thing alone, I would never want that around my children. I have a feeling she reeks of cig smoke like many smokers do. Want that around your baby, or even yourself? It’s a sad fact that many homeless people suffer from mental illnesses. Perhaps she isn’t safe to be around, isn’t able to get her pills easily or refuses to take any. I myself am bi-polar and I know I can’t maintain relationships well, even with my son and his family. There are so many holes in this story.

I am just surprised that people always immediately blame the system/government before even considering the first line of defences which are the family, friends or even acquaintances nearby who chose to turn a blind eye to her. That’s IF she was being truthful about why she lost the place. You don’t know that her family didn’t try to help her. She was clearly either very stubborn or mentally ill if she refused to walk outside to have a smoke. Instead, she chose to lose a warm, tax paid apartment and be homeless 24/7??Clearly, she wasn’t playing with a full deck. Being a former RN, the woman could’ve been a drug addict. We don’t really know. But it’s probably not the best thing for grandchildren to see. Again, you don’t know that her children’s hearts aren’t broken because they couldn’t help her.

DiDi whatever the circumstances were doesn't make this any less horrible. If you didn't have good parents that's unfortunate but that doesn't give you a license to treat your parents like crap. I know several people that had horrible parents but never let them effect their relationship esp. when they needed help. You only get one mom, good or bad she's still your mom.

St 1111 You showed them that you can’t set reasonable boundaries and that aren’t worthy of self-care. Why would they help you after being taught that? We always teach our children with every action we take. Trust me- I have a mentally ill child and have been through the absolute ringer with her so I get it on some level- but sometimes teaching her the right lesson has meant telling her I can’t be the one to help her and pushing to have her hospitalized. Sometimes that means NOT giving her what she wants but giving her what she needs. This woman was given a place to live and refused to not smoke in there. Frankly, I wouldn’t bet on her and go out of my way for her. She isn’t willing to do the bare minimum to help herself.

My brother is homeless and a smoker. He picks up discarded butts on the ground and collects them. Occasionally he might bum one. For those saying how much cheaper it is to buy food, you are thinking of food you can bring home and prepare. Many people don't have the tools to cook on the streets. Buying prepared food isn't cheap. My brother is also an RN. He has some psychiatric issues which got amplified during stress and as a result got let go from his job. His license has just recently expired I believe. He had neither the money, the technology nor the hope to renew it. As with many homeless people, what should have been a temporary and unfortunate hurdle in his life, has only snowballed and made it near impossible to get out. I mourn who my brother was. And even I have become extremely hopeless that anything with him...and so many others...will ever change. I look into this woman's eyes and see my brother. I am sad society did not catch her when she fell. And I wait each day for a similar call about my brother.

Where I live, the school had a night where any child who volunteered could "camp out for homelessness". Essentially, they slept on the hard floor in the school. It's not quite the same, but it was an eye opening experience for a lot of the kids none the less. Just one night on that floor was very difficult.

Billionaires get richer and richer and hundreds of millions have nothing. The world doesnt become better it's getting worse every year. I live in Switzerland and I'm 35 years old. I expect World war 3 to come until 2050 and I know just by observing how terrible the last year was and realizing that it doesnt get better. If I become old I dont think the world will be the same then. As long as the fucking billionaires get richer and politicians all over the world spread corruption and misery humankind will for sure see another big war. China is the worst country the worst government. I think they are capable for anything they could easily start a war and then things will change dramatically everywhere in Europe and US and everywhere else...

They need to stop blaming others. I know because my sister would rather steal lie rob and take pills after it has taken everything but her life. The dead know not anything... did you know that when you lay down to sleep each night you are practicing death? It is the Spirit of God who wakes a person up each morning of their lives until their death... Beware of spiritualism thought by soo many churches today that has its origins in paganism, taught by ROMAN Catholicism- its a false doctrine... I n , Everybody in Heaven is fabulously happy and healthy and Excited. We hope she is Heaven but she was not on the path to get there. You might want to learn that there is another reality ,more credible, orthodox, and widely believed than your simple view. She didn't live the Life of Christ, the sacred life of a holy, pure, sanctified life, partake of the sacraments, attend Church, etc etc. If she committed suicide that is a selfish act which is a mortal sin against the Holy Spirit, It's not probable that this woman is in Heaven. This is not an unkind perspective but it's a more mature, realistic, sagacious, and truthful outcome. I wish her to be in Heaven but Jesus Christ decides and He told us how to get three but this woman didn't take up his holy plan, and live His life to go to Heaven. It is not incorrect to say this because it is stated with honest, sincere humility and charity, only good purposes to educate the edify here. We can pray for her, that's the best service we can provide.

So, before you go on being a hypocrate and judging other people....maybe you should take a longer look in the mirror. If you really do believe you book, maybe you should actually follow it? I used to be a Catholic, so I know all the verses in your Christian books. 1 “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. 2 For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. 3 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 4 How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

Catherine was tired, she just closed her eyes and slipped quietly away. I'll bet nobody even noticed except her Father in Heaven who welcomed her w/ open arms and said, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant. Enter now into the home I have prepared for you."

sad part is that there is never going to be world peace. As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:John 14:6 - Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 🙌

@chief tp me as well. I can't stand hearing it over and over. I am a single mom of 3!!! Worked 2 jobs. Took a roommate so i lived simply and SAVED. 30 percent of my income was SAVED. At 42 i was diagnosed with cancer. I had 3 months with no income before my disability kicked in. I was prepared. With 3 kids to feed. Also have to stop and think about the individuals not having 1 friend or family member who you can count on?? Not one?

@@sebastianharrington5041 again anyone can do it Has nothing to do with family. At all. Rent a room if thats all you can afford. I worked minimal wage with 3 kids on my own. I did it. Put myself through nursing school. I had to pay back student loans. I always lived with in my means and had roommates so i could have savings. Only those who live in the now and foolishly don't save find themselves in a situation like this. Sorry but making excuses is not being accountable and everyone has a choice to do right.

Its sickening to read the comments of people who are casting her to be the bad guy without even an ounce of thought for what she has been through. "She wanted to smoke more than she wanted to have housing." Some of you must not know what addiction, depression and pure dread feel like when it all hits you at once. When your life gets flipped upside down you look for at least one vice to help you forget, even for just a few minutes, how bad your life is. Those tears are not from some selfish broad who Pitied herself for being buried in a hole she dug herself in. Those were the tears of someone Who, despite THEIR efforts to help as much people as they could, was left hung out to dry and failed by the very system they worked for. Someone who had learned the hard way what the ugly side of humanity truly looked like, and had simply "gotten use" to that. You could see it in her eyes, her smile, how she cried, the way she laughed, she was tired. She wasn't some drug addicted narcissist, she was a nurse whose divorce accompanied by a shortage of jobs left her without stability or a means to live decently. So honestly, shame to you who judge her because she smoked, as if that is any reasonable cause for her not to be able to live like a decent human being...
