Homeless Man on the Streets of NYC after His Wife Died

It's about to get cold in New York City. When I asked Richard what he was going to do, he responded, "the same thing I do every year. I bundle up." Sleeping outside in the winter is a sad reality for homeless people who cannot find or affroble stable housing.
Richard has been sleeping in the same area for over a year and has been homeless for six years. Richard's tried the NYC homeless shelter system. After two years of working with case managers, Richard was placed into a shared shelter situation, but with the roommate, he was partnered with, Richard felt sleeping outside was better. I hear this a lot about New York City, and from my own experience living in shelters, many are horrible places.
Richard was the caregiver to his wife. Unfortunately, when his wife died, he was evicted a few days after. It's a familiar story that when a person dies, often the caregiver is left without the ability to cover housing costs and basic needs. For Richard, it was even worse, as the insurance company came after him for unpaid medical bills.
Richard says he gave up. He started doing drugs. Richard lost most of his teeth using methamphetamine. He no longer uses meth. Richard is trying to rebuild his life, but the homeless services system doesn't make it easy for people to get the help they need.
Richard says he needs just two weeks of stability before returning to work, but the truth is that people who have been outside for long periods need time to heal. Besides that trauma that causes homelessness, being on the streets creates more trauma. The thinking someone can go from the sidewalk to employment is not realistic or practical. But people can heal. They can maintain employment. But they need time inside and support first.

About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Our groundbreaking educational content reaches millions of people every month. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

FINALLY! I’ve been looking for Richard every day this week. (photo posted in the community section) His video went virtual. People have been bringing him money and food. I hate that he’s still sleeping outside, especially in the NYC cold and wet. Richard told me a friend will let him stay for the holiday. That’s awesome, but we must fix housing and homeless services to get everyone inside. Richard shared with me his Cash App $rparry976

I work here @ the hospital in Miami,FL. But I currently plan a visit to NYC about every 6 months (mainly October). I come across alot of warm hearted people that could really touch your heart and appreciate the reality that they seem is a impossible fantasy. I’ve seen all the sites I’ve seen all the tourist attractions but one thing that always draws me back is the people. I sent this man money as well and shared his cash app with some people in my hospital. God bless this man and may the people of NYC continue to have kind hearts and help him it takes a village.

Is it easier for me to send him a Western Union or Money Gram shipment. :) I just need his name as it is on his ID and his ID number and the city where he is going to make the withdrawal.

i heard him say he turned down 95 dollars from services, and walked away. Some of us could buy groceries for a week on that, sounds like he doesn't need the money after all. Then I got madder hearing him turn up his nose at food stamps, complaining that he doesn't want to live off sandwiches every day. He isn't starving or he would NEVER say that. I've gone hungry and lived off gas station food, no hot meals -- he is obviously not starving except by choice. How insulting.

@@natashaletourneau5368 It's exactly the same in the UK. We have a huge problem with homelessness and it's rapdily increased these past 5- 6 years. Like Richard said in the video, there's very little support out there despite what the govt leads people to believe. As for welfare, it's ridiculous the amount of hoops that they make claimants go through for a shitty pittance. I know several people that told the dwp to forget it as it's not worth the hastle of the stress of it all. The system is a trap and once you're in it, you struggle to get out of the loop. The govt also set up these stupid organisations were the unemployed have to go see someone every touch and turn to go over the same crap that they discussed the week before. They don't help people and there's a lot of money to be made by the spivs that set up these govt funded organisations. Also, despite it appearing that there are plenty of job opportunites out there, what's really going on is that different platforms like cv library, indeed etc are being used by companies and employment agencies to advertise for free. People are applying for jobs that often don't exist. The unemployment situation has got worse since 2020 with everything that's currently going on in the world. The govt would have people working in work houses if they could have their way. it's such a stressful, cruel and evil world out there and people shouldnt have to live like they do.

Jeremiah 5:21chapter context similar meaning copy save Hear now this, O foolish people, and without understanding; which have eyes, and see not; which have ears, and hear not: Isaiah 43:8chapter context similar meaning copy save Bring forth the blind people that have eyes, and the deaf that have ears. Isaiah 35:5chapter context similar meaning copy save Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Sadly, whosoever are not willing to advice others humans to seek out GOD and to cry out to GOD, haven`t given real, valued help. Let me share you a mystery - a life changing mystery about this place we call: EARTH: We share it with another offspring, who pretending to be us, but are not even close to being us. BIBLICALLY: THE TARES Matthew 13:30chapter context similar meaning copy save Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn. We share earth with another offspring, the hybrid creatures, BIBLE CLEARLY TALKS ABOUT AND WARNS ABOUT. Dear soul, dare to read and study the only book, which shall give you all needful answers. THE BIBLE (KJV). Matthew 13:25chapter context similar meaning copy save But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way. Matthew 13:26chapter context similar meaning copy save But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also. Matthew 13:29chapter context similar meaning copy save But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them. Matthew 13:40chapter context similar meaning copy save As therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world. And to all, who state that BIBLE and GOD IS NOT NEEDED, let me ask a question: How the hell can you be sure, that whosoever you`r dealing with is human being and not just trying to look like one? (yes, it is 100% logical question to ask, and if soul has truly read and studied the bible, then answer is not hard to give). The answer to the question is: YES BOTH ARE NEEDED 100%. Mark 8:18chapter context similar meaning copy save Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember? ????? - so you aint seeing that more and more people become therapist , bringing forth new problems, that should not even exist? Now why is that? Man aka human being trying to help another human, ain+t making things worse? How long are we conna deny, what we, as mankind are busy doing and letting to be done? Please notice my wording: not as individuals, but as mankind, the whole living population of humans, and may i shock you again? Humans are far less in numbers then 7 + billion. We are far less. I leave you in peace with all that i said. Re - read all my comments ( IF NEEDED) to finally get what i truly told. Peace. Psalms 115:5chapter context similar meaning copy save They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not: Psalms 135:16chapter context similar meaning copy save They have mouths, but they speak not; eyes have they, but they see not; Luke 10:23chapter context similar meaning copy save And he turned him unto his disciples, and said privately, Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see: Isaiah 32:3chapter context similar meaning copy save And the eyes of them that see shall not be dim, and the ears of them that hear shall hearken. Isaiah 44:18chapter context similar meaning copy save They have not known nor understood: for he hath shut their eyes, that they cannot see; and their hearts, that they cannot understand. The tares are: among the police, among the doctors, among the politics, among the family three, among the singers, actors, among the regular population.

Now I drive an $80,000 vehicle have a nice house, It's astonishing how many fake people approach me trying to be my friend now. Living on both sides of the fence really changes your perspective on people also makes it difficult to trust them as well. The thing that bothered me the most when I was homeless, was the fact that I met so many people who went and fought for our country/freedom that were homeless, I know for a fact none of these people were lying, I seen their military ID cards. We need to have a war on homelessness! 👍

Step by step, one foot in front of the other. Prayers are great, but you have to change what you're doing, or nothing will change. Accept the $95.00 every two weeks from welfare and start saving for a car or apartment. Get some room mates. The prisoners gets free housing three meals a day they get to watch TV they have no bills they can even get an education all for free and the poor people that works hard all their life gets s*** they need to help the homeless people

I truly feel so sorry that we treat good people like this lovely gentleman. Someone that has lived through the horror of taking care of a fatally sick partner, living with the dread of racking up incomprehensible bills. He is a true hero for doing this interview and showing the world the other side of homelessness. I hope he gets a chance to find stability to get his life back on track. 💖 True strength to still be fighting after being so lost and alone. I challenge the richest people to walk in his shoes and see how well they fare. God bless you.

This breaks my heart. We are all just a few disasters or just one away from being down and out. I cry with you man. 💔 This almost happened to my father in law when my m.i.l. died. Such tragedy. She was sick for 10 years, no assistance after trying, it went until she was on hospice care then she got disability. She was in her 50s when she passed. My father in law had to work but the hospital bills came in it might as well have been a million $ with insurance. I think through hospice he was able to declare bankruptcy and live again. But they stayed with family if it weren't for them theyd been homeless. Family is so important. I dont know whats harder being homeless in the country or in a city. Either way is hard. Hope hes safe and happy you have purpose and you are loved. You seem like a good dude. ✌

I hope there is radical change in this nation some day (sooner rather than later) and as a whole we prioritize taking care of and loving one another. I’m not talking about blocking off borders and not caring for our global neighbors… I mean I hope an end comes to the hoarding of wealth. It’s insane that some are able to amass more wealth than they could ever hope to spend in their lifetime, even if there only job was going out and trying to spend all this money before they leave this planet. There is enough to provide the basic necessities of life to everyone, and yet people still starve to death and die easily preventable deaths because they lack the resources to access basic healthcare. You’ve only typed 3 short sentences and whoever you are, wherever you are, my heart aches at the mention of losing your son. If positive vibes can bless the lives of others even in some small way, I hope I can direct some your way. Wish I had ability to help or hug you. I cannot begin to imagine your heartache and struggles just to provide for yourself and keep going. Within a 5 year span, I lost my dad, sister, and uncle to suicide. Plus during that time my stepmom and grandmother that raised me died. It was a wicked hurt. What kept me going was my own 3 children and my niece(sisters daughter). I felt it was my role to mother my niece. She endured the same tragedies I did. She went on to have 3 kids in her early 20s. She was working so hard to provide for her sons. Then her youngest unexpectedly passed at a month old. I thought I had a strong understanding of grief from my own lived experiences. As I watched my niece fall apart after she lost her son, I realized there is nothing quite so intense and earth shattering as losing one’s own child. I couldn’t help her much. She got into drugs just after he passed. The state was quick to take her other two sons from her. I myself have shelter hopped with my kids and I just barely keep them fed and sheltered. It’s astounding how cruel some people are to my niece and to others that wind up homeless like this. Those who are cruel have been conned into believing there is a laziness issue that fuels americas homeless population. The stories I am aware of from my own experiences are so tragic. I have the most profound respect for anyone who has lost a child and they somehow find the courage to stay on this earth and care for themselves and others who hurt. The day will someday come, where the compassion and understanding outweigh the lies and callousness that leave hurting people without shelter, food, healthcare, and just genuine love. I hope the help and love you surely need finds you. Not sure if I believe in a god or righteous creator anymore that knows and is concerned about each and every one of us. But, I do believe that there is fundamental goodness in people overall, and eventually the good will overtake the ugly and we will all care for one another and lift each other up. ❤
