Young Hawkers Fight & Innovate To Keep Singapore Food Culture Alive | Belly Of A Nation | Part 4/4

America was a gamble for our Hawkerpreneurs. It’s the anniversary of the New York experiment; Will Alan give up his chicken rice venture after a slow start and will Syafiq finally find his stand-alone store? Meanwhile, Stephen of The Original Vadai realizes his mother’s dream of setting up their first overseas outlet in Malaysia. Will the Singapore Vadai be accepted by the country’s main culinary competitor?
For those who chose to stay in Singapore, we see them constantly battle with the dynamics of modern times, primarily the lack of manpower. Debbie tries to convince a group of high-schoolers the merits of the hawker trade. Mr Lee of Ghim Moh Chwee Kueh finally finds someone to be a torchbearer of his Michelin-starred business, Filzah and mum venture into making light work of laborious rempah preparation. With challenges and complications constantly piling up, will they overcome their problems or will they fall victim to this giant pressure cooker?

aww, madam Leong's passing is bringing tears to my eyes. She reminds me so much of my mom who also worked in the food industry for a lifetime before she passed. She still had alot of spirit and a smile to the end. Bless you Madam Leong...RIP. Bless all the hawkers for their work ethic and dreams. I only hope they find happiness and joy in what they do.

The vadai store owner looks and sounds snobbish. Otherwise, naming this series ‘the belly of the nation ‘ is so wonderful . It neatly captures the nuances of the subject matter

Cna, you need to do your homework. Padang is the capital city of West Sumatra, Indonesia. Nasi Padang, of course, is from Padang, not Malaysia. If you visit Indonesia, you can find a lot of Nasi Padang restaurants throughout the country

Indeed, while the PAP ministers are living on lands that can house multiple Olympic size swimming pools and football fields, many elderly Singaporeans are cleaning hawker centers or collecting cardboards.

“Some of the stalls listed moved here from coffee shops. They believe that hawker centre vendors enjoy government subsidies during the epidemic, so it is more secure to set up stalls in hawker centres. ”

Minister Desmond Lee also came out with out of touch comments about Singaporeans accepting high-price BTO flats in mature estates. Given a choice, Singaporeans would gladly bargain down the price. Is that allowed?

If the flat declines in value with age, potentially plummeting to zero value, it becomes a constant source of worry.

The irony is that the harder they try, the more apparent it is that they have become out of touch with realities on the ground. Can the Housing and Development Board (HDB) flat still be considered a golden nest egg?

It is certainly cheap for those on a million-dollar salary. But then again, millionaires would hardly be eating out at hawker centres on a daily basis - unlike the rest of us. The assumption is Singaporeans are rich
