How Singapore's Favourite Hawkers Survived The COVID-19 Lockdown | Belly Of A Nation 2 | Part 3/4
What do Teochew Braised Duck Rice, Malay Mee Siam and Indian Appam have in common? It’s rice. Cooked as grains, used as a fine vermicelli base to a sweet, piquant dish, or fermented into a batter pancake. This common ingredient cuts across different cultures and religions as the country rallies together through food while facing the restrictions under COVID-19.
How does one ensure that Enoki Fries stay crispy, that Onsen Eggs remain runny and Prawn-Paste Fried Chicken doesn’t turn soggy? Out of all these constraints however, a new kind of Appam is born; one that has 3 kinds of cheese, Parma ham and microgreens.

Their positivity and stoicism is super commendable. Respect. Everyone grumbles during CB, but these people find a way, through ingenuity, hard work, sacrifice, and as LKY likes to say, gumption. Props, everyone.

I enjoyed watching this programme. An insight on the hawkers life and how they are dealing this covid situation. I am touched by the passion and professionalism of our hawkers always thinking of their customers. Thanks to all the young hawkers who are willing to take over their aging folks to continue the trade so that we can enjoy good hawker food. Sg hawker food is what I miss most when away from Singapore. Nothing is more satisfying than having my favourite hawker meal when I return from my overseas trip.
Excellent episode. Can CNA pls list the exact locations of these hawkers in the description? This will help the public to locate & try hem out. For sure, we wish to try them one by one.

I watched belly of a nation 3 recently. I just want to say this loud to CNA - well done, thank you for such magnificent production that is so close to our heart and, of course, belly! Very proud to be Singaporean and very proud of CNA.
What's beautiful about this video is seeing harmony between different ethnicity.
This is great to see some of the next generation taking over hawker food in Singapore. Many do not and it's said that the traditional tastes and flavours that make Singapore food some of the best in the world will be gone, as younger people do not see running a hawker stall as a respectable/fashionable employement. I think it is an extremely respectable and sorely needed job. I only wish I could go back to Singapore and enjoy the satay again. Hopefully Covid will be under control soon.

CNA you rock. I eagerly await Belly of a Nation Part 3.
In times like this, we just have to have the resilience to move forward and not loose faith and hope in life and humanity. As the general public, we just have to be nice and be more understanding towards one another to tide through this difficult period, be it to the hawkers, delivery riders and also to all our surrounding neighbours. I wish success to all the Hawkers featured in this segment.
The young hawkers are really articulate. Think they may have some great ideas for their trade in future. Hope they will do well.
A must for me to visit one of hawker centers every time I visit Singapore. Lots of choices at affordable prices.
What a nice video highlighting these businesses.
I have heard a lot of good things from Singapore from people who travels there. I always wanted to go to Singapore, but now I will go for the food
If you never look down on delivery drivers because you really needed them for your business, that's a wrong approach. You shouldn't look down on any professions/jobs whether street sweeper or banker. A job exist because society needed a human being to perform the tasks for specific hours. Be grateful someone is doing it. then again, I don't hold much hope majority Singaporeans would understand this, when mostly they're always thinking in dollar term.
Loving the sharing and helping each other ❤️❤️❤️
We have just emerged from the world's longest lockdown, however our borders are still closed for overseas travel. I cannot wait for them to open so I can visit Singapore again.

To be honest from a food point of view, the scope of options are far limited than that of Taiwan. The veggies are always like just a throwaway and not much selection or portion.. its just there as "filler" so to speak. Go to any night market or even food court in Taiwan and its mind boggling the options a visitor can choose from

That's pure rubbish you are uttering!!! If I really want variety I will go to china. Those taiwan night market sell the same junk food in all different taiwan and has no match Singapore hawkers culture. The fact that there isn't a night market in every district of each taiwan province.unlike hawers in Singapore where I can find in every estates. That convenience is not enjoy by every residence. What you eat in taiwan night market is all monotonous chinese food which majority are originated in China and most popular items in the night market are miostly deep fried in rancid oil.Ya, if that is variety then I agreed with you.

I deliver food for multiple restaurants. I can tell you, number of overall orders are down, $ value of orders are actually up a bit and sadly; tips are lower than average. The logic is brutal because of the extra time and efforts we take to make and deliver their food "safely".

Looking at some of the prices they are no longer the price range we know for hawker food. They are just restaurant downgraded to hawker centre, in order to enjoy the cheap rent. Soon they will outbid the traditional your favourite fish ball noodles or chicken rice, and eating at hawker centre become a restaurant expenses. Stupid trend to promote.
