Mario's gotta be number one. I'm surprised there weren't more people in the Mario franchise like Bowser, but Pikachu, Sonic, Pacman and Steve are all massive and are defo the rest of the top five with Mario. Also, thinking about the biggest franchises of all-time based on money made (and i have actually checked this), Pokemon is first, Mario is second. Call of Duty is third, so would soneone like Captain Price not be in the mix?

⁠@@smpiano6605not really simps tbh. mario’s main revenue for about 40 years almost has almost exclusively been through games and then listened toys; it only recently has had an actually well received and successful hollywood movie. pokémon, in contrast, is not just a game franchise. it is equally (it not more popular) in terms of its card game and anime. after all, it was those two aspects that actually popularised it in the west, moreso than the games. not only that, they’ve had 23 animated movies, multiple netflix specials and limited series, a hollywood live action movie (soon to be another and a live action series) and much more merchandise.

This list suffers from from exreme recency bias, I mean in the top 20 there are 2 BAULDERS GATE 3 CHARACTERS and the Tomb Raider trilogy recently releaced and Sack Boy has had a very expansive, enjoyable game recently and it feels like things like these are the only things people are thinking about which is just unfortunate considering how super iconic video game characters havnt had a recent game but are still super iconic!

donkey kong yes, samus absolutely not. metroid is not a popular franchise at all (in the grand scheme of things). it’s really just a mainstay nintendo franchise. the genre it helped popularise is more popular than every metroid game. the fact that a small indie game like hollow knight (inspired by metroid) has outsold every single metroid game ever released (in its 40 year history) and it’s still only around 5 million, is wild.

Donkey Kong, Absolutely top 5. Samus not really. She’s def Iconic but not at all for newer generations. I would throw either Kirby, Spiderman, Ryu, Scorpion or Mega Man.

I saw Mario at number 2 and I was kinda baffled. I was thinking Spiderman would be at number 1, because he's building a video game legacy, on top of a TV and film legacy, which is where the polls come from so I wouldn't have been surprised. But it was Lara. I understand why people wonder where DK or Rayman are in the list, and I agree with Lara being at top 15, but Sonic, Pikachu, and Pacman not being at the top is wild. They would still be behind Mario though, we wouldn't have gaming, or at least it wouldn't be as popular if it weren't for him. He single-handedly saved gaming almost 40 years ago. My grandma knows who he is.

The only other characters that could have taken the number 1 spot are Mario and Pikachu because everyone knows Mario and Pikachu. Mario is Mr.Videogame himself and Pikachu is just Pikachu, the mascot of the most profitable franchise in the world right now.

Looking at the list, I'd have to guess that 2/3 of the 4000 people that voted either grew up exclusively on Playstation or currently own a Playstation. If that's the case, then Lara Croft's placement makes a whole lot more sense if you ask me. Tomb Raider was huge when it first launched, with Lara Croft being treated as the holy grail of video game characters (I can think of two good reasons why). It would also explain certain characters making it high on the list like Sackboy and Kratos.

"...because they are so well known noadays..." So basically Cloud Strife. You can't tell me Cloud didn't earn his spot thanks to FFVII, Kingdom Hearts and the recent games that came out.

In my opinion, this should be the top 5. 5-Steve 4-Pikachu 3-Sonic 2-PAC-Man 1-Mario

no, they’re just older british citizens. in britain, these characters are more popular. so of course due to the older and more british voter demographic, the results are going to skew more to that early to mid 90s era of gaming, with some more mature modern games thrown in there.
