Same, actually started to plan a trip but wanted to watch some videos that would cover dos/donts and the dark side of a cruise just to see if it was worth the time off + cost. Nope, looks like I'll be staying right here after all. Wont fly anymore unless I NEED to, thanks TSA and Karens. Not terrorists Im concerned about but rather loud, obnoxious, often drunk middle age asshats having a meltdown when 6-7 miles above sea level. The videos of people needing to be duct taped to their seats is what did it. TSA I can deal with but the drunk entitled flyers I can not. Looks like if I cant drive there I'm not going. Aint nobody got time for trains and buses are for poor people.

As a generator technician I completely understand how shit can hit the fan. NOBODY takes generator maintenance seriously! Not even hospitals! All my customers would look at my reports and say "It's running right.. well what would be the reason to replace dry rot cracked fuel lines?? I mean it's working right?? So we will just decline this $750 repair.. mmmkay.". I simple LOVE taking the signed repair quotes declining preventative repairs. When that customer calls screaming at 3am saying their building or whatever is without power and their generator failed. Forcing me to get up Sunday morning, drive an hour to fix it, hearing "We pay good money for your service how did this break?!?!". Being hauled into a conference room with tools in hand..Being belittled and humiliated for five minutes as they explain all their losses and inconveniences.. Waiting for .. "Well what do you have to say for yourself ???". Your exhausted but your ready for this moment. "Sir in my hand is the exact preventative maintenance that was suggested three months ago, a full labor breakdown with parts and labor, including pictures of the existing part about to fail. For a mere $750 all this could of been avoided. Your name and signature clearly declining this service. I'm truly sorry I failed to convince you this was worth repairing.". Utter and compete silence. "Oh.. well let me approve these repairs so you can get it fixed and send us a bill..".

I worked on a cruise ship and it was like living in a cartoon. Some of my favourite passenger questions: " when are we going to be at sea level?" Which elevator do I take to get to the front of the ship?" Seriously though, I met so many great people that worked on the ship, unfortunately many weren't treated very well, worked endless hours for hardly any pay.

The ship used in the thumbnail photo looks to be the MS Estonia which is an insanely terrifying story itself. It was a passenger ferry that capsized and sank in under an hour in the Baltic. Something like 900 people died. The government refused to allow the removal of bodies and ended up dumping gravel on top of the wreck. It’s now illegal to dive there. It’s widely been speculated that Estonia, a former part of the Soviet Republic, was using passenger ferry’s to smuggle out former Soviet weapons. There’s definitely a story there I just don’t know if it’ll come out in our lifetime.

i mean, in terms of aggression induced while under the influence, alcohol loses maybe only to methamphetamine, and that’s a significant bar right there lool. it’s pointless to try and figure out what was the thought process behind the decision. there was no _thought process,_ as well as no _thought,_ neither any kind of _process,_ whatsoever. that’s a literally braindead “solution” in the circumstances they were in. kinda makes you assume that the whole crew was apparently of a quite even degree of poor mental capacity as a “business unit”. i mean, of all the personnel *(including motherfucking bartenders and cooks, just think about it!)* no one stopped this from happening. if there were at least 2 individuals who convincingly persuaded captain to stop the free booze move at its “idea” stage, backing it up with some strong arguments from a literally 5min long google search, it frankly wouldn’t happen. so, yeah, that’s a successful hiring strategy right there, gotta take notes while you can loool

I was on a Carnival cruise in September 2023(Glory) we got trapped on one of Carnivals Islands called "half moon cay" a huge storm came in we were trapped on the island for 2hrs and some 3hrs in heavy rain and wind. There were 700 of us including ship workers. They had to bring the U-boat over one at a time and exactly as mentioned in the video trying to align the dock with the ship was not easy..some people were in wheelchairs. The water was choppy from the storm even though the storm subsided somewhat. Once it calmed down that was when the captain decided to send his crew to come and get us. They had to make 6 round trips in terrible weather conditions and align the dock with the ship 3 times. The boat was swaying the waves were big. People were praying on the boat and some crying. By the time I got back on the boat I was so cold and the ships A/C was cranked 24/7 I ended up getting really sick the last 3 days finally arrived home and remained sick for 2 weeks. I also believe the ventilation on the ship is very poor. I swear everybody had a cough. 4000 people on this ship.

So the cold air causing you to get sick. And all this time after 25 years of practicing clinical medicine, countless hours of medical and continuing education, and a strong knowledge of disease; I can't find any source that explains how cold air or being wet causes illness. All this time and everything I read shows that bacteria, viruses, fungi, etc. cause illnesses. You became sick because of being around other sick passengers. You even stated everyone had a cough. That's because people got on the boat with an illness and spread it to others given how close everyone is on a cruise and during the island delay. The ventilation system being down actually decreased the amount of illnesses because everyone's germs weren't spread around more of the ship.

I couldn't think of anything more horrific than being on one of those giant cruises with thousands of people even if nothing goes wrong.

The proximity of toilets to sinks on cruise ships and some RV's always turned me off to traveling in them. Rules for public accessible bathrooms in the state where I live recommend 6 feet of space between the toilet and the sink to avoid contamination. So in a small bathroom space you would need to sanitize the toilet after every use and the sink before each use if you want to avoid the pleasures of shared sickness.

All activities and island stops got canceled. All pools and upper decks were closed. Food got repetitive and scarce. People falling over in the hallways due to the listing. We were falling off our beds in the middle of the night for the same reason. It was like a floating prison and I can’t ever imagine spending upwards of a $1000 a person to go on one again.

We were in the gulf stream, and without stabilizing the ship turned broadside to the waves. Blaaaaa. It was definitely the cruise of a lifetime. The day at Royal Caribbean's private island was pretty nice, but the stop in Nassau was *HELL* and I never want to see the Bahamas again. Basically cruises are boring trips for boring people and everything about them is built around that. You're stuck there, so there are endless sales pitches for the duty-free store and whatever else. The duty-free store isn't a deal by any measure. I do enjoy the ocean though, and going out on the decks at night and not seeing any city lights was nice.

I've been to Jamaica a few times (you really have to stay at least 2 weeks, preferable more, because it takes a few days just to get "unf**ked" from our usual rat race pace and get into the "irie" mood of the island). Anyway, something I learned very quickly was that I much prefer the Negril side to the Ocho Rios side. Ocho Rios is where all the cruise ships put in, and when they do its awful. Tons of "boat people" clambering everywhere, total insanity - since they only have a brief time time to be there. You can't even bargain at the market, because the stupid cruise people will pay whatever price they are asked right off the bat, and don't even try to haggle. Consequently, you will never do as well at the Ocho Rios markets, because they know if they hold out for the boat people, they'll get ridiculous prices. There is no way someone could even remotely get a picture of the REAL Jamaica by stopping off from a cruse ship. You can't experience their hospitality - and the fun stuff like asking "Cheap Charlie" (no lie lol that's what he called himself- take you anywhere for 2.00 US) your cabbie where the best place is to get jerk. He'll take you somewhere most tourists don't see, and had some of the most amazing food ever! As a thank you we bought his dinner also and had a great time just getting to know one another. And you will always do better in the Negril area markets where haggling is a game enjoyed by all. If the seller acts angry at the end, you know you got a good price. One lady finally conceded to me but said "OK- but NO BAG!" Then she gave me a huge hug. I've never been to the Bahamas, I've heard it's not as totally chill as Jamaica - but I wonder if your experience had something to do with the fact that you were on the cruise - just thinking of the difference in general between Ocho Rios and Negril. One thing for sure - NO CRUISES!! 😆

cruises wreak absolute havoc on local economies too. these ships set into port, disembark a horde of tourists who clog up local infrastructure and spend their money on a bunch of tourist shit (encouraging a whole cheap ass underbelly to proliferate around these ports) then leave without learning a damn thing about the places they visit. just the worst.

A buddy of mine went on a cruise once. Worst experience of his life. It's no fun being trapped on a boat with a bunch lowlife slobs looking to stuff their faces at the buffet. The quality of the guests is not what it's portrayed in the commercials where they're all models out of a fashion magazine and everyone is behaving themselves. And then there's the fact that you're in international waters with a whole different set of laws and overseeing agencies. Should something happened to your loved one while on a cruise, the U.S. has no jurisdiction over the incident.

I know this is just for entertainment, but as a DJ who has worked on cruises for about 20 years - this is a very uncommon thing. Modern boats are now equipped to handle most of these "disasters" and in most cases you'll never know they even happened. Things like Titanic, Costa Concordia, or the Poop Cruise are very rare. Your choice to not go on a cruise because of things like this (even though you think you might enjoy it) is the equivalent of not flying anywhere because you think the plane will crash.

@@dziewiaty There are currently roughly 300 cruise ships in operation right now as you read this comment. Close to a million people are on cruises. If you like math, you driving to the grocery store is far more dangerous. The one thing I truly fear is getting sick. When you have 3000 people all from different countries in a closed environment, the germs that they bring will have a field day with your immune system. Whenever I did a 6 month contract, I always got my shots updated, and brought a gallon of hand sanitizer. Getting sick on a ship is a fate far worse than dying IMO.

While I heard a couple of stories that sound like what you're talking about, the vast majority of the stories that I heard were of camaraderie and people working together to overcome their situation. I have yet to see any new stories cover the countless stories I've heard of humanity overcoming diversity.

Stayed for a week on a ferry traveling the Alaska Marine Highway. My cabin was the size of a closet and had no windows. There was no TV, no wifi, no pool, the food was basic cafeteria, and there were no entertainers. People did camp out on the deck...intentionally (it was cheaper than the cabins). Plumbing never clogged up, there were no fires, and the power never went out. Not a single thing went wrong. I loved the atmosphere. The whole thing was awesome. For real, one of the best vacations I've taken.
