I still prefer M4/3 particularly Olympus for the following reasons: 1) Cost; 2) Raw file size without sacrificing quality (e.g. 50MB Fuji vs Olympus 22MB) ; 3) IBIS (Superb level stabilization); 4) LCD display (entry level is a touch screen); 5) Size of course; 6) M4/3 crop (2x crop factor); 7) Battery life

Awesome video man, keep it up! Also, that focus ''pulsing'' occurs because you have the camera in continuous auto focus mode, if you set it to single auto focus it won't do that. Much better for the kind of photography you were doing in this video.

Thanks! I did try between AFC and AFS and seemed to still get some pulsing? I was back in AFC for the POV segment though - thanks for the help 😄

@@GeorgeHolden It might just be an issue this older generation has then? See, I had the same pulsing problem with my em5 mk2 in C-AF mode, switching to S-AF completely fixed the issue for me. Might also be a firmware issue or something. Anyways, thanks for the video, not many covering the mft system these days. :)

@@GeorgeHolden I have an E-M5 Mk II with the latest firmware and can confirm that it still pulses with AF-C. AF-C and tracking are unreliable with that camera for me, but not an issue with AF-S.

If you're using 10-year-old kit, who cares what Olympus or Panasonic might do in 2023? If the gear works for you, use it and enjoy it, and don't worry about whether there'll be a Lumix G99 or an OM-5ii. One of my favourite lenses is a 1967 Jupiter-8. And the AF on that lens is rubbish.

Exactly. We've been hearing for years that M4/3 is soon going to be obsolete, but what does that mean? Worst case scenario seems to be that no new products are released, and people start selling off old gear in a market that is geared towards buyers. A camera doesn't become worse in itself just because it's no longer at the cutting edge. I can cope if the market suddenly floods with cheap GH5s and Olympus Pro lenses.

@@chrishowell5718 I took advantage of people dumping their classic fourthirds gear about a decade ago or so. While I passed on part of it, I had a very nice e-3 and for a while e-5 setup with some of their semi pro and pro lenses. I sold the E-5 after a little while as I was moving into micro fourthirds, and Olympus was starting its om-d line by then providing a usefull and in some ways better alternative. Later on I traded the E-3 and most of my lenses for a Hasselblad 500 with some nice lenses, but kept the 'semi-pro' 50-200 as it is just a really versitile and good lens, and works well with the e-m1 and other mft cameras provided they can use pdaf (else its af is rather slow). Still using a first generation E-M1 at times, mostly use a pen-f with either a lumix 7-14mm, or a selection of modern and classic prime lenses, or at times the 14-42 pancake zoom.

@@c128stuff Exactly. I picked up a second-hand EPL7 with 17 and 45mm primes this time last year. Complements my GX8 nicely, plus two lenses that fit in any pocket if I'm going out to take photos. Obsolete in PC and phone terms seems to mean they no longer work; obsolete cameras seem to work just as well as they did when you bought them, which is fine with me.

@@chrishowell5718 they are just as obsolete as my Hasselblad 500.. they are good for certain use cases but are outclassed by much more modern equipment for general purpose use. That said.. I did a fair bit of concert photography with an E3.. and often got results with could compete with what people around me were getting with their mid 2010s full frame camera just by knowing the camera very well and using technique to get around its rather horrible performance above iso 800. But.. its more work that way.

I find no issues with my olympus earlier bodies in single AF, as many have said…..even on earlier, entry level. Likes of the Em1 mkii etc that also have Phase detection AF are more sure footed. You may find that on the Lumix bodies such as the little GX80, the panasonic depth from defocus AF, in single, is lightning fast and very accurate. I have had Canon and Sony, higher end bodies but as you’ve stated, the price point for bodies and lenses is great for me as an amateur. Combine that with the size and whilst not perfect, they’re perfect for me. Great video; thankyou.

EM10 mark ii with 20mm f1.7 is my walk around set up. Absolutely love this camera.

as a m43 user i sometimes find it a bit difficult to produce the type of pictures I have in mind but my gx85 will always have my heart also I'm glad I'm able to buy basically any lens I want for next to nothing

New to the channel, and have binged all your videos while I've been off work sick with Covid 😅 It's great to see advocacy of using what you have, and what is realistically within your means. When I look back on my photography over the years, my best (and favourite) work was with lower-end kit. I have access to a lot of high-end equipment through work, but it lacks the soul and feel that I get from the E-M5 Mk1 that I dropped in the sea that time on my honeymoon after getting an amazing shot of that dog with three legs.

Welcome! Thanks for binging, I hope you're not tired of me already 😂 I also find that, the lower-end kit seems to carry with it less pressure and somehow that brings out my best shots, compared to the higher-pressure modern cameras - it's so counter-intuitive but it's true!

I love using my GX1. it's an ideal everyday carry camera and also ideal for street and urban photography.

I bought a faulty Olympus M10 (SD card spring release doesn't work but rest of camera does) for £65 and bought a 15mm cap lens for less money and use it for street work, ok so the cap lens is not a great lens overall, but unless your pixel peeping it's fine for what I want. You don't need mega buck camera gear if you're doing general photography and not bothered about 'perfection'.

The only camera system I want is M4/3. I love it - very cheap to get in to, very easy to use, lightweight, loads of lenses including vintage. M4/3 is the ultimate camera system for me: G1, G5, Gx7. Love them all.

Haven't bought a new mft camera for years now, but that is because I'm pretty happy with my pen-f and first generation em1. Street use, and the convenience of a very portable yet very capable system is why I started, with a Lumix g2 and Olympus ep1. Had 2 em5s for a while for a 2 camera setup with 2 primes for doing event photography, but nowadays I mostly use my pen-f with a 7-14mm lens and some primes for longer focal lengths. I have a 50-200 classic fourthirds lens with adapter to use it with the em1, but I haven't used that for a long time now. One thing I really enjoy is using bright classic manual focus lenses for longer focal lengths. Together with focus peaking that can work very well, and with a bit of practice I managed a pretty good keeper rate on pictures of running dogs, relatively fast sports etc. But beyond that.. for much of my everyday photography, modern smartphone cameras are doing fine. That wasn't really the case yet half a decade ago.

The pulsing autofocus is a result of the age of the camera for sure. But when compared to other 2011-2013 mirrorless cameras, the autofocus is pretty quick! I will say the E-M10 II even is much quicker than the first generation of Olympus micro 4/3 models. And for not much more money (and sometimes even less)! Of course you mention it being older so I appreciate you not accusing ALL micro 4/3 cams of having slow/poor af. Considering I use an E-M1 II for my motorsport photos and it is lightning quick! @@GeorgeHolden oh yeah that will do it! I’d consider most Olympus models before the E-M1 Mk II to have pretty weak continuous. Hence why i ended up with that model for motorsport. I hear the E-M1X and OM-1 are even better but at that point you’re not in budget street cam pricing anymore

I agree with your argument. I have a two camera lifestyle. For my more serious photography, including portraits and architecture, I use my Olympus EM1 M II. For fun and whenever I travel, I carry my Olympus EM5 M II. Attached to this I usually use the ultra compact, Olympus pancake 14-42mm lens. This lens is affordable and absolutely amazing. It is less than 1 inch long! With it, this camera fits in my pocket and that means I use it far more than I would a bigger and more bulky camera. 16 megapixels is still respectable and I can make 12 x 18 prints that are more than decent.

@@GeorgeHolden I'm not familiar with that Lumix lens. In general, I think you can trust Olympus to make great glass.

If you haven't, the Panasonic 20mm 1.7 is great fun. It's not the fastest at focussing and it's noisy so not great for video, but its so compact it makes some of these smaller bodies coat pocketable. Paired with a GM5 (if you can find one) it's absurdly small

I just picked up a e-M10 Mark III with 426 shutter activations, a 40-150 mm Oly lens, and two SLR Magic Lenses on Ebay for $425. I've been shooting with Micro 4/3 since 2016 and I can't imagine using anything else. I do street and travel photography almost exclusively and the size and weight more than makes up for any drawbacks.

Olympus cameras have really good jpgs, and they are customizable with good options. The only Olympus lenses I liked are the 12mm f2 and the 17mm f1.8 I tried the 25 and 45mm and didn’t like them. I never got to try the 75mm but heard many good things about it. I prefer Lumix lenses better. My setup is the EM5 ii and Lumix 20mm f1.7 For the Olympus jpgs I only have experience with the OMD cameras, but I imagine the colours are the same on all the sensors.

Those EF-M systems are getting super cheap for those not too worried about upgrade paths, though! On MPB, a M3 body is $250 and M50 is $350. The 22mm f/2 pancake lens is $134; the interesting 28mm 1.2x macro with built-in ring light, sigma 30mm f/1.4 are around $200; sigma 16mm f/1.4 around $300. You can built a pretty decent street photo kit for inside $500 with the M200 and 22mm.

4:38 the original E-M10 is 10 years old and its contrast-detect autofocus is obviously going to pale in comparison to a contemporary Sony full-frame. As someone already pointed out, it'll snap to focus fairly quickly in Single-AF, which is great for street.

I've just upgraded my second hand em10 mk1 to a used mk3. Focusing much quicker on newer model and pictures are outstanding.just over £200 for mk3 with 4k shutter count

Bought an E-M5 Mark I with the intention of getting into m4³ system, but have been using the GX9 quite a bit more. Most of the lenses I own for this system are Olympus lenses with the exception of a couple of Panasonic lenses, but overall it is a fun and affordable system to use.

Although I don't have the em10 I do have the original OG EM5 'Mark 1'. I got it back in 2012 or 2013 and my motive was a small pocketable camera I could take with me on the subway and limit me carrying a midsized bag, and looking like a noticeable photographer with a larger DSLR or SLR. I will also say the Olympus color science is good too! I pair it with my Metabones speedbooster and Canon FD lenses sometimes too! Maybe 2 or so years back I picked a Panasonic GX85 (Used) from MPB. The original EM5 don't have focus peaking but I learned how to master that cam.

@@GeorgeHolden With the FD lenses It's fun to use and yield results too. I am enjoying the GX85 (I was originally planning the Pen F), I haven't utilized the 4k feature as much but the photos are good quality too. My only complaint is battery life. Now that could be the particular battery I got with the camera, it seems to drain faster than all the cameras I have.

A year ago i bought an new Olympus EM5-III with a 45 mm lens. The focus is very fast and the 20 MP pictures looks very well. I do not earn my bread as a photographer and MFT suits me well.

@@GeorgeHolden I use the entry level em10 ii for fun, for travelling, for photowalks and also for pro work, shooting products for e-shops. They are more flexible than most people think. In addition olympus/om offers a very good, free and always working tethering app!

You should get the grip for the M10, handles much better with it, mk 3 & 4 have made a big improvement in terms of AF. The Zuiko 20mm F1.4 (40mm F2.8) or the Lumix Leica 25mm F1.4 (50mm 50mm 1/f 2.8) are magic lens...

I had the m10.2 but bought the ep7 for the extra Mpx and a bit smaller size, and better looks. I use it with 12mm for street and plan to get the panasonic 12-60 for travel, i'd also love to try a 20mm. I also have the A7iii, it is a bit bigger but if i'm honest for street with a 35mm it is not bothering, for travel it will get too big and heavy. Just the other day i wish i had it with me in the mountains instead the olympus, towards the night the olympus was getting to ios6400 and the noise is way too high, i think higher than sony's 12800

Yes very good points, it's the trade off that never ends trying to balance size and weight with flexibility in low light situations

My first mirrorless camera was the Oly E-PL1 then bought the Panasonic GF2. I bought the E-M5 in 2014 and sold the E-PL1. Just bought an E-M5 ii and the HLD-8G grip the other day because the E-M5 mode dial keeps on selecting other modes. I opted for the E-M5 ii because I can carry using the batteries and the HLD-6p power battery holder. I'm sad the E-M5 iii does not have the portrait/power grip. I'm not ready to carry an E-M1 yet, lol

Totally understand! The M5 seems like the sweet spot between the M10 and M1

m43 is so usefull, especially as its my first camera, its lighter, much easier to run with (which i do alot when i notice something to shoot) and the camera quality is actually great, i expected it to take a tank when i first bought it compared to cameras ive borrowed or rented but they are just great and i can get used to the wide variety of camera gear that exists much quicker cause its so much cheaper ive got three lenses and am about to buy a 4th whereas i could only get 1 at most for the same price. my only problem with the system was its difficult to get those wider angles below 24mm from a good source, or thats what ive found, i know ill eventually move onto a aps-c or fullframe, id like a bit more resolution and the wider apeture larger esnsors bring, but im always gonna keep this one around as a little run and gun

16MP is not a problem in terms of resolution if you frame with no need of cropping. You can print as large as you need to for street photography from 16MP.

It’s great that you are giving m43, and particularly Olympus, due credit for their positive attributes, including the comprehensive range of excellent lenses for the system. However, I don’t know why you assume that OM would want to move to a bigger sensor in future. The full frame segment is probably over traded now and m43 occupies a niche in the market.

I don't assume at all, but I would hope they would as I don't know that MFT will remain relevant for much longer

My GX9 pulses the same way. But it doesn't really bother me with the 15mm 1.7 I just set to focus priority and even though it pulses a bit. It nails focus every time. And ironically is actually extremely fast focusing despite the pulsing. It's some of the fastest/snappiest focusing experiences I've had in a while. And this is with me owning a Sony a7riv. I can click the shutter to try and instantly take a picture. And the focus is so fast it can focus in between the time from my half click to shutter release. It's just.. fast. Would definitely recommend checking out GX9 if you can afford it.

That's interesting to know, it's certainly on my radar - I checked it out in-store the other day and it's definitely a nice option!

About any camera can be your „street camera”; I was occasionally using my Canon 1D Mk II as „street camera”. It's rather big - and rather heavy - but it has fast and accurate AF, so there's no need to resort to „zone focusing”.

thank you for this fun and informative video, got one question: Does this Olympus EM10 camera become warm after being turned on for a few minutes without shooting videos(just looking through menu or shoot pictures)? I live in a tropical place, previously owned a Fuji xt20, and as soon as I turned it on, within 2 minutes I could feel the warmth in hand, and totally turned off my passion for shooting. Now need to get one that has no such issue, would like to hear your input, thanks a lot.

Thank you! It does become warm but nothing crazy, unless you were to record video non-stop I don't see overheating with this camera becoming an issue. All cameras will become warm when operated but as long as they don't overheat and power off you'll be good 👍

Interesting video. Two points: why do you assume Lumix will drop M43 just to concentrate on the L mount system when for a long time they have been providing smaller sensor cameras for Leica to put their label on like the LX100. I'd have thought that trend could possibly continue. Secondly regarding the focus speed of the EM10, if you are doing street with it why not just use zone focussing? I had that camera several years ago so my memory is hazy, but as you say, the latest cameras like the EM5iii or the EM10 iii and iv are very good.

Thanks! I'm not saying it's a certainty, but time will tell whether MFT or L mount is more profitable for Lumix - if consumers are still buying new MFT cameras then it'll stick around, but if budget options of the L mount and third-party lenses come to play, then we'll see. And very good point, I have been using single point on mirrorless for a while but maybe I'll try zones again soon

Another excellent video! Thank you. Just sorting out which Oly will suit my street photo work. I do depend on zone focusing so I suppose the lens is the biggest issue. Would love to know what you deem a good sidekick for my Fuji since I usually take two cameras when on the street. I'm using Fuji x-e2 and x-t30ii currently. I'll probably always take my x-t30ii with me so trying to find an Olympus partner to compliment.

That tiny lens George is using is 45mm f1.8 and has a 90mm equivalent angle of view. The size & weight savings is in the lenses and only a little in the body.

I just got an E-M2 MkII and the focusing is noticeably worse on a 12-32mm Lumix zoom than the Lumix 25mm f1.7 - which is lightning quick. So, it's more about the lens than the camera is all I wanted to add, in case people think it will affect everything.

I believe some more expensive models of Olympus had phase detect AF, and I'm not talking about their super pro line, it's e-M5 III or M1 III I really want something compact for street like m43 camera but the AF is killing me

What do you think of the Olympus Digital ED 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 EZ Pancake to go with this camera?

I used that same camera throughout Europe, fits in your pocket, the zoom at 14-42 mm does a great job for street photography and landscape. The size lets you take stealth pictures which do not draw much attention from others. Always carry two batteries with this camera while traveling. If you want nighttime pictures the 25mm F1.8 or 45mm F1.8 are really small and will help in low light situations. Great little camera with great image stabilization.

Kinda weird but the current leading development is in small sensors, notably 4/3 with no noise (les than one photon) and DR off the chart. There's already a 40Mp scientific 4/3 camera out there. The funding is not camera companies but vehicle manufacturers (who have a lot of money). It may well spell the death knell of the full frame sensor.

I'm gonna put this out here now: If you want MFT glass, you better stock up before the next GH camera comes out with PDAF. Because that camera is going to cast a large spotlight on the MFT ecosystem. Market will be getting tight.

Yes! This is something I'm interested in - do we think the next GH (GH7?) is going to have PDAF, why wouldn't they have included it on the GH6 ahead of the S5 II, maybe the GH series will be stuck with DFD?

@@GeorgeHolden Next GH is definitely gonna be be PDAF. All the messaging from Sean at Lumix feels like it. They just lead with the S5ii because of the roadmap. (not to drive a truck through the thrust of your theory on the mount dying). And I am very interested. FX3 user here. Bought because the GH6 sucked so bad at AF for single crew situations. Would go back for the stabilization alone.

@@agenericaccount3935 Agreed the GH series stabilisation is, so far, unbeatable. I had the GH5, left it for the same reason of poor AF. Do agree if the AF performance were addressed it would become hard to say no to as a filmmaking tool!

Very different cameras, I wouldn't use this for video at all - however I also dislike the Sony A6000 series for photography too. The Sony is a better all rounder, the Olympus more photo centric in my opinion

Focusing. You're using the Ollie 45mm which dates from 2011, it is an old lens with pretty slow focus motors, actually it's got a very fine focus mechanism that takes a while to wind in and out. So you do have to take your time with it, likewise the elderly Lumix 20mm, portrait good, action shots, meh. On the plus side they're tack sharp. CDAF has to be absolutely in focus before it will lock, PDAF can do the infamous fuzzy focus trick (thank you Sony). It is not the camera's fault - try again with one of the more modern lenses, they generally go beep-click before you can blink. And/or use a different focus mode, one that tells it more where you want the 45mm to focus. If focus priority is set on (the default), it cannot shoot until it has the AF locked, you can just mash the shutter button. I carry the E-PL7, sibling to the E-M10ii, the 45mm is not the cleverest lens on it, but it is small and lightweight, not to mention tack sharp. It is a must-have but not first choice, I normally have the PZ14-42 riding.

The thing is: despite of their "small" sensors, most of micro-four thirds cameras are VERY expensive, so that majority of models have a price tag equal or similar to that of DX Nikons or APSC Canons. Even the propriety lenses for the Olympus OM/Panasonic cameras aren't cheaper than the "regular" ones for APSC (or even full frame) Nikons/Canons. And the situation is the same when it comes to buying used gear...

I disagree with the used prices, for a similar price you're stuck with DSLRs from other manufacturers - besides Sony who also provide great video features in their early mirrorless

Yeah I don’t know where you’re shopping for cameras. Micro 4/3 bodies are expensive when they first come out but there prices drop quickly. The glass is insanely cheap for what you get.

You'll get a lot more features with the equivalently priced APS cameras. You're not comparing equivalent offerings.

I have big hands, long fingers. I sold all my nikon gear and invested in Olympus. did some professional jobs as well, but because of compact size, I was struggling to hold, after few hours, my pinky finger was hurting and in Pain. Just because of that, I sold again my Olympus gear and switched to sony FF. a little heavier and good grip on hands.

Panasonic/Lumix have more or less always been in bed wth Leia for lenses - even M43 lenses. Other companies e.g.; BlackMagic are still using M43 sensors. And you're right - the M43 cameras are awesome for street. I got omn the mirrorless and M43 bus back then the original OMD Em5 came out - i think 2012 maybe? That camera and the grip I bought at the same time are still going, althoght the rubber has ome off the main grip on the first grip. When they were the only cameras with IBIS they were streets ahead (pardon the pun) the 17mm or 25mm or even the 12mm primes made great street lenses and the 45mm and 75mm were magic for more controlled portaiture. Plus it's the only interchangable lens system you can fit in your pockets. Grab a combat jacket and you can get the camera 3 or 4 primes a spare battery and the flash in your pockets, Magic. And the Olympus prime glass is really nice. I have the 17mm and the 45mm and my partner has the 25mm, I'm looking for the 12mm next and the 75mm after that. My partner was shooting a Nikon D3, but she was going to South Ameria for work, so I got her and EM-10 MkII marked down afetr the MK111 dame out and I think she loves having that little yet still very capable camera with her. Definitely recomended for street. Grab any of the bodies and the 17mm or 25mm and and you're good to go.

Switched to 3/4th way back with e-450... People though i was crazy , they laughed, tried to explain the mirrorless concept... None were having it esp the nikon/canon users... ...now everybody wants a mirrorless 😅😅😅

Thanks for an interesting video giving advantages and disadvantages of MFT over FF in price and size. But why are you comparing a three year old A7C with a ten year old EM10? Surely it would be more reasonable to compare A7C with a later generation three year old EM10 or a three year old EM5-Mk3. Or compare the old EM10 with A7 (not A7C); the A7 was still very compact. Old EM10 is much cheaper than A7 and later generation EM10 or EM5-Mk3 is much cheaper than A7C. I own an A7, EM10 and EM5-Mk3 and have not experienced pumping of the EM10 in S-AF. The EM5-Mk3 has blindingly fast AF for both S-AF and C-AF

Thank you - I hear your point, but you will notice part of the discussion is on accessibility and price, in this case the value of a 9 year old MFT versus buying a newer full frame. Comparing two of the same age and price range would make the argument far less interesting in my opinion, as if you ask me which sensor size and video features I want for the same money... It'll be FF 😂

Thanks for the video. Your argument would be much stronger if you used a more current m43 body like the EM-5 III, even though it is significantly more expensive. Their being “a dime a dozen” shouldn’t be the strong point in your video.

I understand your point, although the value prospect is the main point because many who want to get a dedicated street photography camera don't want to spend $$$ - for those wanting newer cameras, there are plenty of channels out there 👍

Even right the Sony and other cameras has better AF system the question is are you really need it? Like here this street photography situation when you don't need to rush. Just walk, chill and calm. You don't need the fastest and best AF system. And me personally barely use AF. I love Single Focus and use it 95% for street and my personal works too.

I think there's where you need the best speed, beside sport and wildlife. People are not gonna wait for you to take the shot. The other solution would be to pre focus, and you do that exactly so you don't miss the shot.

I'm the only one that noticed the guy opening the door behind him and making fun of how much he was talking?

Micro four thirds is awesome, this coming from a full frame Sony shooter

People are sleeping on these cameras for sure. They are a pleasure to shoot with for street photography. Having said that, mine is the EM-10 Mk III and I highly, HIGHLY recommend for you to try that one instead. It has a much newer processor, the new menu format, great ergonomics and some excellent shooting modes. Got mine from MPB with a Panasonic Lumix G 25mm f/1.7 ASPH for £360, so the price between Mk I, Mk II and Mk III are within a £100 range, but you get a lot for the extra money.

My interest began when I picked up a Fuji X100S 2 years ago for trips and festivals, then I've just been experimenting with budget gear for similar purposes.
