Thought it might be worth clarifying! This isn't a spec list ranking, it's an opinion based tier list of my own personal experiences with each camera and what it means to me. Which is why the G7 ranks higher than the G80/G85, for example

Makes total sense. I was too focused on the specs, and as I thought about it, I get your ranking. The G7 was the first camera I bought for myself. It’s the camera that really made me love photography and solidify my joy of videography.

The E-M10-II is legendary. They stuck all the features in it that they could think of when the marketing division was not paying attention. It even has 4 (!) custom modes on the dial. The OM-5 only has one. One! And it's small and metal built. They downgraded the line after that, clearly indicating this little camera was too good.

For stills, I agree wholeheartedly. I think it's video capabilities are more than enough for me, but looking at it objectively, probably the G9 is the better hybrid camera. With the way photography has given way to videography in the last 5 years or so, that has to be a big consideration.

I needed a robust camera that can withstand the Norwegian winter since most of the year is cold and wet here. After much back and forth, the choice fell on an EM1 Mark ii with 5000 shutter action together with an Olympus 14-150mm ii and 2 batteries. Everything is in mint condition and I paid only 600USD for this. I am 100% sure that for that sum there is no better solution today. Thanks

What about the Panasonic GX9? In my humble opinion a photo centric camera - one of the best for street photography and low light work. Small, light, well constructed, 20 meg AA sensor, stabilised and a flip screen for shooting from the hip. It's the G9's little brother. I couldn't live without it! Okay, it's not weather sealed, and you might need to buy a bigger grip, and it only takes one SD card, but hey, for discrete street work and travel, what more do you need?😊

I love your idea for this video, Emily, and the way you've put it together. Very nice samples too. It would have been rather dry without them. I expected to differ more from your findings, but you are obviously a (subjective but experienced) expert. Really well done! I agree for 80%. Most of what I don't agree I would just move for one tier. You asked for "a chat", so there you have my remarks on the whole system parade. The biggest omissions in the list is the *E-M1 Mark I/II/III range.* I only have the original one, but it's interesting enough, accurate skin color and slow but precise phase detect autofocus. From what I understand, the Mark II was revolutionary in many ways and was only beaten by the G9. The Mark III came 2,5 years after the G9 and had a tiny bit better sensor. Is still the one I crave for, it obviously has superb ergonomics with improved sensor, improved PDAF and many other nice things, lighter than the G9 (hiking!) and a better battery life. Somehow I think the *E-M5 and the E-M10* have exchanged places in this ranking. The E-M10 is definitely more suitable for hiking, and, when not outdoors, the E-M1 (all iterations including X...) are more interesting than the E-M5. I think the E-M5 has a retro appeal, but is neither as portable as the E-M10 nor as capable as the E-M1. That said, there are certainly guys who love just that half-way philosophy. One important omission is also the *splendid GH2.* It's the camera of a pioneering, historic importance. It has made serious video quality available to people like you and me (quality video camera's were much more expensive in 2011 and this was probably the first real hybrid). It had a decent image quality for photo marred by the lukewarm jpeg algorythm. But surprisingly, years after, when nobody used it anymore (somewhere in 2018 or even 2019? I forgot) Panasonic came up with a firmware update that took care of this problem. It was small, light, with unnerving tiny knobs but superb overall ergonomics. When my first GH2 got stolen, I went on using the GM1, terribly disappointed by its ergonomics but the results were fantastic. The color science of the GM1 was all that the GH2 was not, and even better than of the G85. The GM1 is not weather-sealed but has probably the most fastidious build quality I've seen in the MFT. Long after, using the GX9/G9 already, I was offered a black version for under €100, and I oh so much regret I hadn't done it, if just for the collection... a little gem, really, although the E-M10 objectively has IBIS, a viewfinder, a better image quality, and better ergonomics. In other words, much more of a camera while weighing just a few grams more. Historically, the *GH4* had been very popular from 2014 on until the GH5 came out. The GH4 so much revolutionized some video features over the GH3 that we thought it won't be replaced soon. The GH4 and G7 were the last great Panasonics without the IBIS. In 2017 time was ripe for the GH5 to set the new standard. And I think as a video oriented hybrid it was the best ever design of Panasonic MFT, flawed only by the lack of PDAF. For this flaw alone I think many who could afford it, migrated to Sony. I knew right away your *punishment of the E-M1X* would raise some voices. My blind assessment of it was the same like yours until I had bought the battery grip for my G9. Ever since, I have never taken it off. Also on the E-M1 original: the grip is very useful and such a peace of mind when you cover the events. I still don't know if there's anything that justifies a non-removable grip design of the X, and they could have included more batteries in detachable Oly/Pana designs, but the grip experience in itself has made me look different at the E-M1X. Plus: there is a whole "school" of photographers that swear by the E-M1X. I would indeed love to try it out. Finally, I don't have it, but from many a user I realize that the *GH6 is a phenomenal* video AND photo camera. It may have a better sensor and some more advanced features than the G9 Mk2 and the O-M1! And the *GX9* may be neglected in your list. It's ergonomics are not great, it's heavy for it's size, but it probably has the same superb sensor as the G9 and the color science is no less either. Time to stop now or I can better make my own video! :)) P. S. Of course, you'll come up with the lenses ranked in this same fashion like cameras here?

There was great irony when they released their statement about no upgrades to the original's firmware on a page that, up above, said they would basically continue to improve their cameras to make your investment a wise one. They never did that with the OM1. Minimally, they shoulld have improved the AI detection and added person detection.

❤ I love my Olympus OMD EM-5 original camera and I use it every day, with the 17mm and the 25mm prime and the only zoom I have is the fantastic plastic 40-150mm zoom and it's satisfying for my street portrait needs r.n. I really like only using the prime lenses and my 17mm is the f:2.8 and the 25mm is f:1.7 and all my lenses have perfectly function fast A/F. I love the Jpegs straight out of the camera as long as my exposure is perfect. Amazing, solid build like a tank and those Zuiko glasses are just amazing quality. I'm an enthusiasm amateur photographer and learned photography back in the late 70's with 35mm and 120mm manual film cameras and my first camera my dad give me was a Agfa 120mm and he had the Kodak Retina 3s 35mm camera and he had his own dark room and he was experimenting and learning to enlarge and print photographs. Now I converted from manual cameras and film photography totally into digital photography and I'm aceing it! I would highly recommend the Oly OMD EM-5 series cameras to anyone who likes casual photography because beside the great quality of the cameras also it's retro 1973 OM-1 design very pleasing to the eye! Thanks and I'm big fan of your videos, thank you!🌹❤️👍💯

Yay, that was fun! Experience and usage are wonderfully subjective bits. Articulating perspective can be tricky. Yours is wonderfully done. Like everyone else, I wanted more out of the OM-5-new menus and sensor from O-M1, which is why I did not grab one. I laughed, not hard, just glee for featured E-PL6. Indeed , the red camera is my casual camera partly because it seems so playful and works perfectly well with 17mm f1.8 lens. The "go to" camera has been an E-M5.Mk3 last four years. Never had so much fun or the solid track record for keepers. PDAF nails it every time.

To me, the GH4 was the one that really made me get into digital cinema, even though at that time i had already shot on RED cameras (which I hate, btw) and came from an analog film background. That GH4 was a real delight paired with Takumar, Pentax and old Tamron lenses. Later on, I was bitten by the Blackmagic bug, and now I own the BMPCC6KG2 which is amazing, has a Super35 sensor an takes EF mount lenses, but i miss the BMPCC4K ability to use any lens out there because of its micro four thirds mount. And the really film-like image of the Blackmagic Pocket OG, which none of the newer models replicated at all.

Having owned the M10, and still using an M10 Mark II along with a M1 MARK ii, and having owned and using an M5 Mark II, I find the M10 to be a great little camera. I may be a bit biases as the M10 was the first camera I ever "loved" due to it's ergonomics (with a grip attached) , but I think the M10 II is a great camera and very budget friendly! But...just my humble opinion. Thanks for an interesting video. OH...and with the PL series (I started with a PL2, then PL5), Olympus really blew it when they got to the point of having a PL camera that was not compatible with a electronic viewfinder. As far as I'm concerned, if there isn't a viewfinder, I don't want it!

Yeah the E-M10 had its place back in the day. The E-M5 was better but also a lot more expensive, when they first released the price was $1000 vs $700 so if you didn't care for weather sealing it was a bargain imo! @@Cubeforc3the e-m10II is 79 grams lighter than the e-m5II, and around 100+€ cheaper too, which translates to the e-m5II to being about 50% more expensive (at least on the European market). That might be insignificant and either way cheap to some, but it's a significant difference. (And the e-m5I is worse than the e-m10II in all but weather sealing) edit: I realised you were perhaps specifically talking about the mk 1s, which are more closely priced, and the e-m10 not especially great so I wouldn't object as strongly there.

Great video! I am not familiar with all of the cameras in your rankings, but I have a couple of them - the E-M5 II and the OM-5. The E-M5II was my first M43 camera, moving from full-frame Canon 5DM3. The E-M5 II is what sold me on the system, and I then got first one and then a second E-M1II. I still use the E-M1 Mark IIs for all my professional work, and I am sure that camera would rank well on your list if you were familiar with it. The E-M5 II got boxed up and put away for years as I used my E-M1IIs exclusively for everything. My main reason for this is they handle and operate differently enough that I felt it was better to stick with the Pro bodies for everything. Recently, my sister bought me the OM-5, and it is a really nice little camera, reminding me of how much I liked the E-M5 II. So, I dusted off my E-M5 II and I have been rediscovering just how great this little guy is! The OM-5 is updated, better sensor, more features, and extremely light, but I love the feel of the E-M5 II. Again - great job on the video. Love your channel!

You gotta give the OM1-X some more cred. Micro four thirds is unique in that it has this lineup of just tele(zoom) lenses that are absurdly small given it's size, but still big (for m43) lenses and it's the perfect camera for handling those lenses, and I think it demonstrates the sheer versatility of the m43 system. Personally I like small cameras though and if I was in the m43 system I'd love to have an PEN-F and a GM1. And yeah, I'm not a m43 users, but I watch your channel, because it's bubbling over with joy for cameras and photography. I was a professional photographer for over 30 years and although now retired I still enjoy using my cameras both film and digital. I am looking for a small digital camera for general everyday use and street photography and occasional use when travelling. Until seeing your excellent channel, I had not really considered a micro four thirds camera. A family member has a Panasonic GX80 and has got some excellent results with it. For roughly the same price, (£425) from MPB, I could get an Olympus Pen E-PL8 with a VF-4 viewfinder. Please can you offer any advice to which camera you think I will be happiest with. I am not interested in video, just good quality stills. I do print my work on a Dye-Sub printer up to 12x8 inches. OR is there another camera/system that you would recommend as an alternative? I only intend to purchase two lenses say a wide to standard focal length zoom and if I go for Olympus the Sigma 60mm. I don't really want to spend much more than £800 total. I did try a Leica X1 but was not happy with the low light performance and it was fiddly to use. Fortunately I sold it on for a profit! I know what to look for when choosing equipment for professional use but realise that with my advancing years, I need to look for something lighter and smaller but the choice is overwhelming! I will always keep my Nikon DSLRs for any professional work I get and submissions to picture libraries. Congratulations on your channel, I very much enjoy your videos and wish you every success.

I owned an Olympus Air 01 in 2017 when the software worked. I wonder if it will work with the new OM System app that works with my E-M5 Mk II. Anyway, the Air worked great and produced images as good as the E-M5, since they have the same sensor. I used it with the Panasonic 30mm f/2.8 IS macro lens, and could put it on the end of a monopod, stick the monopod several feet off the path into the blooming flowers and get some good macro shots thanks to the lens IS and it was a fairly bright day, too. All without treading off the path. So there were some creative applications of the Air and it was also fun to walk around with just a Pana 14mm f/2.5 on it and shoot discreetly from the waist. On my channel I recently posted a video I made with the Air and the Pana 14mm on a high tripod, of my reaction to the 2017 total eclipse. It's the latest video I posted, in fact. I am sort of past seeing a lot of videos at this point but I have to admit I found this video more entertaining and well done than I had expected. Credit were due! 🙂 Surprised you didn’t mention the GM5. I put the GM5 > GM1 simply because it has a functional view finder and some minor usability tweaks that make it even better, plus I always found the rear multi-menu wheel of the GM1 horrible as it becomes stiff easily, dirt, etc. On OM10.4 vs OM-5 -> the Tilt LCD helps a lot and the EM5.3/OM-5/EM1.2/EM1.3 sensor can’t auto iso to ISO 25600, only 6400. For some street night life work, yes, I want it to roll higher. I concluded the reason is that while the sensor refresh of the later cameras is faster, when you go over ISO 6400 the sensor refresh speed slows down to similar to the PenF/OM10.4/EP7’s, and probably that “state change” is not easy to make particularly rolling back and forth in a changing exposure from ISO 6400/to >6400. I still wish they figured that out somehow.
