Aurelio was the smartest dude in the movie. More afraid of John than Viggo. Even Viggo gave him a pass when he found out about what his son did.

I remember on a different video, someone commented that Viggo knows Aurelio wasn't dumb, and there was a good reason why Aurelio punched Iosef in the first place. Viggo knows about Iosef's arrogance and selfishness, which he would be embarrassed by. Viggo didn't expect Iosef to mess with John Wick. Iosef would be upset that Aurelio wasn't punished for punching him, but Iosef is at fault. Viggo was disgusted and scolded Iosef for his mistake in messing with John Wick.

Aurelio knows that it’s likely that John’s past would have likely caught up to him regardless of whether or not he had gotten out of the life. Most of the time it’s usually not IF someone with his reputation is targeted but rather WHEN. That said, even despite the fact that John got out of the criminal underworld, while some people would love to have the reputation of killing such an infamous hitman, his reputation would leave the cautious or the well informed to hesitate. Only the ignorant, the insane, the suicidal or the stupid would dare cross John Wick, and the lucky ones or the compliant are those who survive.

I love it when Aurelio tells Viggo that his son stole John Wick's car and killed his dog and all Viggo can say is "Oh".

If memory serves, in all the John Wick movies, whenever someone hears his name, all they can say is “oh”. Even Viggo responds that way - even Iosef, who then has to hear exactly who John Wick is and what he’s capable of. Even Iosef, who evidently didn’t know the details, apparently knew enough, when he heard that the car he stole belonged to John Wick, to realize that he was well and truly fucked.

The first John Wick movie is still unmatched, such a great film

It really is special. A typical revenge movie would have just had the Russian mobsters kill John's wife to motivate his killing spree but making it about them interrupting his grieving process so John can now take his rage out on a human opponent instead of the disease he couldn't fight and felt completely helpless against, elevates the story into something new and something we don't usually get in an action movie.

I liked that Aurelio's interaction with Viggo was different, though. Yes - Aurelio is totally a man with his own empire, but he recognizes that Viggo's reach/empire is a notch above his...and Wick, on his own, has an even greater reach than both of them. It's a short pair of scenes that quickly sets up several things: Aurelio's got his own business, Aurelio's got balls of steel, but best of all...Aurelio's sharper and carries more wisdom than almost anyone else in the movie - seeing the bigger picture in seconds and adapting just as quickly.

John L is a solid actor, for sure. The nuance in his performance in this scene is one layer out of many used to gradually reveal John Wick's character to the audience. The reaction on his face is more effective than a bunch of words. And it's all of these little details that make John Wick so much better than the typical action movie.

I really dug that Aurelio had a bottle and a glass waiting. He knew John was coming.

@@ssd3904 John explicitly did and said just that in #2, with Cassian and the Bowery King. He doesn't kill without reason, and shows mercy when he practically can. He's unfailingly polite and respectful with everyone he deals with. He remembers everyone in this sub-culture by name, from bosses to bodyguards. I understand why they all seem to genuinely like him.

I love how all the guys in the shop watch him as he approaches Aurelio in obvious fear. They probably knew they were safe, but his mere presence was enough to cause them concern.

And this despite the fact that John had only had that dog for a few days. There are some things that you just don’t do, as the song says - you don’t interfere with the last gift that a dead woman gave to her husband, and you don’t kill a guy’s dog. Period.

The incredible thing about the John Wick series is that it remains consistent throughout 1-4. The darkness, professional, calculated, and attention to detail is the same with all movies. It doesn’t change tone with humor, gore, action, etc. It’s just a masterpiece throughout. My favorite action series of all time. The attention to detail is just incredible.

@@Binxalot I concur. The first movie at least nodded toward reality. John was a tank for absorbing damage, but things that should have injured him a lot still did. The succeeding movies get increasingly ridiculous, as John is repeatedly shot and stabbed, run into by cars, and falls off buildings, and not only survives but gets back up and keeps fighting. #4 might as well be a Loony Toons cartoon.

I think it fairer to say he's one of the few people to have seen the monster, and lived. Many, many others saw the monster, but it was the last thing they ever saw. Iosef obviously didn't know John and had never heard of him. And Iosef had never stared Death in the face, until he looked into John Wick's eyes that night at the Red Circle.

The absolute fear when Aurelio sees the car. He knew.

What I like about this scene is the intentional framing. When John shows up to the shop, Aurelio has a stool pulled up and some nice whiskey ready. John sits with him - he doesn't remain standing. It shows Aurelio isn't just a business contact to him. This isn't him interrogating Aurelio - he legitimately just wanted to know if Aurelio had lied to the kid to get him to leave the car there. It would have been as simple as John just driving out of there. But Aurelio chose loyalty over cleverness. He would rather turn Iosef away, sock him in the mouth, and risk getting in trouble on the spot. He could have lied. He could have called Viggo and told him what Iosef did. But he didn't. Not out of fear - out of respect for a friend. Respect for a legend.

True enough, although I imagine that if Aurelio had done that, John would have his car back, but would then go after Iosef anyway. The theft of the car and the killing of the dog would not be fixed by the return of the car, not to mention the insult to John of the theft and killing. Iosef was a dead man the minute he walked into John’s house with theft on his mind. There are some things that you just don’t do.

And this is when you start to realize that there is something off. You probably expected John to do something. But seeing Aurelio punch the punk and pour John a drink while talking respectfully to him, you start to realize we don’t know anything about John.

Time to start my John Wick marathon after watching this.

Just out of curiosity, did you know that there is a difference between right and wrong? Or do you hurt people whenever you feel like it?

When this came out a coworker went to see it and told me he didn't understand John's motivation. I just assumed he was a sociopath, because you'd have to be pretty inhuman and soulless to not understand.

It's a spin on a pretty classic trope. Instead of a retired action hero being pulled back into the life by the death of his wife/girlfriend, he loses his dog. Somehow it feels more vitriolic.

The dog was a gift from his wife after she died. So he wouldn't be alone.

I don't recall if she actually knew what her husband did before he retired, but you don't get married to a man like that and live with him without seeing that there's some serious darkness under the skin. She knew she was the one who got him out of whatever it was he used to do, and wanted to give him something to keep him out. And it was working until Josef f***ed it up.

I love that viggo called him pissed and the second he heard what happened he just went “aight time for me to go beat his ass too”

Talking about interesting details, it is worth to mention that among the different liquors Aurelio has (left side @ 1:23 ), he specifically serves a tequila named 'Peligroso' (Spanish for 'Dangerous') @ 1:38

John Wick should be taught in storywriting classes. This movie tells so much without giving away so little. John's car is essentially a plot device to bring us to Aurelio's garage where we get indirect characterization for John from Aurelio by the secondary antagonist of the story, just amping up how much he's messed up and how important Aurelio knows that car is.

Dont get me wrong, its a great movie but its hardly some story writing masterpiece. The whole movie people do nonsensical shit just to advance the plot and/or to facilitate an action scene. Like, just the idea that Josef doesnt know who John Wick is stretches belief. We are constantly told what a legend Wick is and Literally everyone (even the random ass bouncer at the club lol) knows who John is but the son of Viggo doesnt? Shit, John had only been retired for a few years at this point. Josef would have in his late teens/early 20s when John was working for his dad. But he never saw him even one time despite him being responsible for Viggos whole empire?😂 He only doesnt know who John is because it suits the story. It really makes no logical sense.

I mean Josef not knowing isn't too surprising, the guy was kind of a moron even before killing Wick's dog and stealing his car. John Wick was an assassin so he wouldn't be seen much and why would he be going over to Viggo's place often I bet most of their talk was through telephones and Viggo telling Wick to kill some target. Josef looks like he's early 20's so he would know little about how all the things work under the table compared to someone like Viggo. Old man bouncer knowing who Wick is makes logical sense since he's been around for decades most likely based on his facial features and hair color and maybe he worked with him in the past at some point hence the offer from Wick for him to take the night off so he doesn't have to kill him.

John really loved his wife and the final gift she gave him. That dog was beloved ❤

I love the mechanic over aurelio shoulder in the shot 2:29

Aurelio is probably where John had his car serviced lol

Well it is serviced there, in the 2nd movie when he finally gets the car back and it suffers extensive damage he calls up Aurelio to fix it. Aurelio tells him it will take years because the entire car is basically destroyed from all the gunfire and such, but he'll do it because John really likes his car.

This movie was paced out really good from action to down time with world build and back and forth. Same with the 2nd movie. However 3rd and fourth just seem to be all action and doesn't allow us to have that slow time to process it all.

Three and four also left out the part that made the movie really work, the relationship loss and pain John is going through.

Well 3 and 4 are taking place during a time where basically everyone and their mother are hunting John so it's not surprising

That's my version, I think Keanu’s is a little different, and I think this (JW 4) is like six months later. So within a year, I think it all happens. I would say almost within 7 to 8 months.” -Chad Stahelski So JW 1-3 time span around a week and a half JW 4 is like 6-7 months after JW 3

All good observations for 4 movies that are all terrific

This is what bothers me SO much about the sequels... its an entire world living in sync with ours, and unless you're a part of it you'll never know... but the sequels have litterally THOUSANDS of assassins coming out of the woodwork, in that city alone... it was stupifying... let alone 200 people slaughtered in the airport alone and not a peep from law enforcement

Yeah that's a popular critique that I agree with too so my only head canon solution is that the amount of money that has to be floating around that ecosphere can just simply make anything go away. Everyone has a price.

I mean, there's always the theory that John died at the end of the first film and 2-4 are Purgatory.

Small role, but in my opinion, Leguizamo's best.

Keanu Reeves career was done almost 10 years after Matrix 3. Then this dropped and you were like damn this is good

You gotta admire the actor swift change from exasperation, to worried, to knowing many are screwed in a few short seconds

The cool thing about this movie is they did an inverse of the save the cat trope to establish not only motivation for John but it provides a twisted form of justification for his actions. Its a beautiful piece of writing.

Keanu's monologue in the warehouse after Viggo's goons catch him, really clarifies what the killing of that dog meant to him, so we finally fully understand why he's doing this. That was the most intense and passionate performance I've ever seen from Reeves.

Virgo and John know to listen to him. Doesn’t stop their warpath but shows just how much respect he’s give

I love how this movie very slowly reveals who Wick is (till it explodes at the house scene)

What I like about this movie is....nothing. Thieves and killers who are not dead or in jail at the end. Why would I like this movie, again?

The way his expression changes so subtly walking is crazy

John Leguizamo is amazing

Aurelio has drinks ready 4 John, as if he's been expecting him. Such a good friend right there.

The time when Luigi the Plumber and Shadow the Hedgehog are in one scene

Love the look on his face changing as he started to notice the car and hoping it wasnt John's

Viggo would’ve hand delivered his pos son if he’d been ANYBODY but his son. Even then he didn’t rule it out

He may not have had alot of opportunities to show off what exactly he is capable of, but John Leguizamo is a fucking phenomenal actor. I have enjoyed everything he has portrayed way back to Spawn, he's just too good.

If you haven't seen him as Tybalt in Baz Luhrman's 1996 Romeo + Juliet, I highly recommend it. It is a phenomenal film, and Leguizamo's portrayal is absolutely execellent.

Arilio didn't fear John Wick. He respected him. There is a difference. ✊😎

Viggo would understand the reason why Aurelio punched Iosef in the first place. Victor was wrong to believe that Viggo was not going to like Aurelio punching Iosef. That was not the part he won’t like, instead Iosef messing with John Wick was the part Viggo was not going to like.

Wonderful three minutes this series of events and all the lines is just *chefs kiss*

You left out the best part. When his Viggo says, "Oh..."!

When he called John old man that hit me hard. The first time I knew I was getting older was the first time I heard AC/DC on a classic rock station.

Aurrailio was not afraid of John, it was more like loyalty to a friend ❤

"Its wicking time" has to be my favorite lines from this film.

What I love is that John didn't change the shirt. The blood is vivid on it. Sends a message.

John Wick is so terrifying that some would rather punch the son of a mob boss and have a gun aimed at their head.

Aurelio punching Iosef was truly acceptable. He did feel sorry for John.

The half smile turning into more and more piling stress from Aurelio says it all.

1:20 the small detail of having John's seat and his drink glass ready cos Aurelio knew he would come. 😊

Aurelio should've just kept the car and give it back to John.

Aurelio knew that wouldn't make any difference. Iosef would still be a dead man. Aurelio just didn't want any part of Iosef's screwup.

@@andyk446 Iosef was not trying to sell the car, he wanted it cleaned so he could keep it. So Aurelio would have had to steal it from him, kill him etc to get the car. And that is probably a level of escalation he does not want to deal with given who his father is.

You don't get it. Any interference or action towards what happened would look bad or be bad. He wants no part, plus he can't keep Losef there, he's the son of one the biggest crime lords of the city. There's no rational thing he could have done

Love the fact that he already has a seat waiting for him there

I like that John Wick's response was, "I need a ride." Meaning that what is about to happen, was already a given.

People go off when someone takes certain things or kills certain people that mean something special to them! New lesson, the same applies for an animal that they love and cherish the same way, especially a dog!

You know Keanu Reeves in John wick was badass and a energy boost from a day off sipping coffee 💪 and tea.

One of the best scenes in the movie. John Leguizamo killed this role.

I never noticed the extra stool. He knew John was coming. What a nice host.

I like how John didn’t even change out of his bloody shirt. Just checked the garage and stepped onto the bus 😂

This movie has hands down, one of the best main character themes.

A little detail about this scene is when aurelio is pouring the drink on john the name of the drink is PELIGROSO "Dangerous"

First thing he does. Before opening his mouth. He offers John 'peace'. We know this after watching the second movie. I dont know if that piece of the lore was done before the first movie or added after the second. But we all know now, Aurelio offered John peace. John Accept the peace after the explanation, and only then. Then he ask for the car and Aurelio is obliged to give it. Details.

Aurelia isn't afraid...it's REAPECT. He knew what was gonna happen and he kept his head.

As soon as Aurelio sees that car he knows there is a pile of hurt coming. They need to develop hushed character motor and have him involved

This is how you make a character of myth. All that Aurelio needed to see was the car. Out of all the high end vehicles in his shop, John’s is the one that caused the most emotion. The scene where Viggo is explaining to his son who John is, and the phone call with John….just peak character building.

Nothing but a great movie

Can we get Aurelio to show up for chapter 5 please! Just would really think it would be cool to have him back.
