The Myth of 'I'm Bad at Math'

"'I'm just not a math person.' We hear it all the time. And we've had enough. Because we believe that the idea of "math people" is the most self-destructive idea in America today. The truth is, you probably are a math person, and by thinking otherwise, you are possibly hamstringing your own career."

    I’m a Math Professor, I’ve been teaching for half a decade now. I wish it was true but it just isn’t. There are some students who really can’t do anything above the most basic arithmetic calculations, barely any algebra. About 15% of every class. Others can memorize the steps and repeat them with some mistakes enough to pass, but the don’t really get it. The majority of the students, sadly. Only 20% (if lucky) really get it. I think it’s more cruel and very stubborn to say “anyone can do math” when it just isn’t true. Some people really can’t and it’s unfair that we keep lying to them telling then that they should be able to do it, it just makes them feel stupid, like there’s something wrong with them. They may be talented in something else like literature, history, art or sports. They should focus on becoming the best at it, instead of keep butchering their self stem forcing themselves to fly when they don’t have wings. That doesn’t make them any less valuable of course.

    Prof. Marcial Araiza You said "Other can memorize" which mean you expect your student to memorize the so many formulas of math which is why math is hard instead of trying to explain where these formulas come from. And if they're terrible at algebra why not use any numbers (acting like variables) instead of alphabet so they can understand algebra concept a little bit (and then use the alphabet again when they understand) ? this is why so many books and teacher are terrible at teaching math, in teaching dont expect all students to be so fast at calculation or algebra, teach slowly and try not jumping directly into answer

    I was constantly grounded in grade school because my teachers told my parents that I just "make up" the answers to my math homework. They didn't even ask me if I needed help, they just assumed I was being lazy. From that point until now, I convinced myself I was bad at math, although I actually like math. Now I'm an adult back in school taking a lot of math and science classes. I am committed to finding a way to learn those concepts that are difficult for me to wrap my brain around.

    "When we spend hours worrying&trying & studying to no avail" - This is what math students of all levels go through. It doesn't matter whether you are an Einstein or Average Joe: math is difficult. You have to grit your teeth through the confusion and push on. I can't tell you the number of times I wanted to pull my hair out as a math undergrad because I wasn't getting anywhere after studying for hours, but you push through those feelings and little by little it starts making sense till you finally get it. While the government is going we should upgrade this road and put in a sugar tax they are completely ignoring the important things that will shape the future of the country. And then they use tax payers money to pay for an education system that doesn't even work just to make children "learn" but in reality it does nothing. Like seriously, when will we ever use the knowledge of how to find the area of a circle or how many electrons are in a carbon atom in the real word? Chances are we will never use them so why do we learn them? The government should stop wasting our money on things that we will never use and start using it to pay for things that students are passionate about so that they money would be put to good use, rather than being wasted on math. Am I the only one who understands that schools are doing anything but preparing us for the future?

    This really makes me upset because I am passing all my other classes except for math (Calculus). I have always had a hard time with math since i was young. It is hard for me to understand certain formulas and number systems. I am in 12th grade and still can't do math. Even though I will not pursue anything involving this stuff I would still like to get better and just can't. I hate being called lazy when I try so hard and still can't seem to understand. So I had a whole group meeting with my teachers and counselors and even learning support and they said I have a disability in math, Which I was confused at first because I did not know it was a real thing, but it is. It's hard for me to register certain equations and numbers in math problems. So I have been living with this since 2nd grade and I am just finding out about it now in 12th grade. I think it is rude calling people lazy because they can't do math. When there are many reasons as to why. No matter how many times I study or get tutored I still won't understand and that just the way it is for me. So I tend to give up knowing I am not going to get any better. So please don't make people feel dumb just because they are not good at math and call them lazy when I am sure it's just hard for them.

    What about people like me who will literally sit there for hours trying to learn math & retain all of the information? I don't think I'm lazy, I'm just one of those people who simply can't grasp mathematical concepts. I can't even do simple math. When I look at a page with too many numbers and formulas on it, I instantly get a headache. It's like my brain refuses to process the information properly and everything just gets all scrambled. I hate to admit it, but I have given up on trying for the sake of my sanity. I'm an all or nothing kind of person. There's no in between. If I'm trying to be good at something, I'll obsess over it & if I can't reach my goal, I'll hate myself & become lethargic, then hate myself even more because I allowed myself to get fizzled out. Sometimes I feel like I'm stupid because I struggle in all of the other subjects too.

    Yes & you have to memorize everything you learn that year, which is a lot for my brain to handle. I get very confused when faced with too many numbers & equations. I'm not sure if the way math is being taught over here is far off or not. I could very well just be one of those people who will never be great at it.

    because you dont know how to study, if you have a test in 2 weeks and you want to get an A in a subject like calculus or even harder subjects, you should already be studying. Not the day before the exam, not 4 days before the exam, 10-14 days will prepare you. It takes time to absorb info, if you study hard everyday you will get it I gaurantee you. I use to think I was stupid because id study for 10 hours, the problem was I studied 10 hours, but only 2-3 days before an exam, then i barely passed or failed. Once i started preparing 10-14 days before an exam I was getting A's. Theres no such thing as being too dumb, just stop being a snowflake, its frustrating, but if you wanna be a doctor or an engineer your gonna have to struggle, and your gonna have to be discplined enough to be super prepared weeks before an exam

    No, I'm not lazy. I'm one person that absolutely hates mathematics only because I simply do not understand it, literally. I find it really hard to grasp any basic parts of maths, I still get mixed up with the time and I'm 15 years old, when I should be able to tell the time really easy, there's times when I'm at the shop getting my favorite food and drink, (chocolate, crisps, sunny d..) and I always have a fear that I don't have enough money when I know I do I just seem to think wrong, I catch myself counting my money at least three times before I go to pay for it, like I have 50p's and £1 coins, and I seem to still check just incase I don't have enough. For Christ sake, I still cannot do algebra, or at least I get taught it one day and forget how to do it and show a blank the next day. I'm 15 years old, I'm now going into 4th year of high school, I'm in the lowest maths, and I have only passed one maths test out of all of the tests I have sat through my three years of high school, and I have my exam next year, which is scary knowing I have a fear that I will fail. My maths teacher did not understand why I was refusing to do work and homework, where it was the fact I could not understand it. She wasn't a nice teacher, she just didn't understand that I could not do it and the fact that I was Dyscalculic, (it's like Dyslexia with numbers) I am so scared for my future 😰

    Chloe, at 15, the brain, especially the section related to mathematics, is not fully developed. When I was 15, I absolutely hated math and everything that had to do with it. I was in a situation similar to what you are going through and I was VERY frustrated. When I hit about 17 however, everything just started to click in my head! Algebra, Trig, Geometry started to make sense to me. I even got my first A in my Algebra 2 class when I retook it senior year. (I had failed the year before). Just hang in there!! Your brain needs to grow a little more but trust me. You will get it. Soon. :)

    Chloe Milne you shouldn't label yourself as dyscalculic. There's a wide range of mental disorders and classifying someone as "x" only does harm to the person. For example some people are told that they have "genetic depression" so they stop trying to fixt it because they think they can't improve their condition. Do not fall in that, because saying you have dyscalculia is a self-fulfilling prophecy. The harder math is for you, the harder you gotta work it. Just try to make math exercises everyday and try to understand them -you'll find yourself one day doing math without any problems!- PS: English is not my native language, but I hope you got what i strove to say. Also, I wish you the very best of luck in your relationship with maths! :)

    I’ve always been terrible at math. I don’t know what it is about it. It just seems confusing and hard. I used to always think it was just me being stupid or not studying enough but now that I think about it, it was probably just my garbage teachers. My worst teacher ever was probably my 4th grade one. She was very cut and dry. Do this. Do that. If you don’t you get in trouble. She was constantly giving me lectures and extra work for no reason I could figure out. But as a sensitive kid, I couldn’t take it. I would just keep telling myself that there was a reason. And the reason was me. After coming home crying every day my mom finally got me into a different class and praise the lord the teacher was actually good! Although I got out of her class before too long, it still left a permanent impact on me.

    @XZ That's my life. Math RUINED my school experience. I would have liked school if not for math and being called lazy etc. when I spend hours doing my homework and with tutors, crying my eyes out because I just didn't understand. I quit school as soon as I could, just to not have to do math again...plus, I knew that I'd just get an F and fail because every year, the math would get more difficult and no matter what I did, I was just scraping by. When you always work hard just to fail, you get sick of putting in all that time and never being rewarded.

    @alxjones9 жыл бұрын

    While I agree with the main message of this video, I think it lacks a fundamental understanding of what is meant by "mathematics". Math is not just numbers. Talk to anyone in an undergraduate Mathematical Analysis course and they will tell you the only numbers they've seen in a while are 0 and 1, and even those are treated as abstract ideas that have some given properties. In Abstract Algebra, we deal with sets, groups, rings, and fields, none of which necessarily contain numbers. We use logic and critical thinking to devise elegant solutions to complicated problems and prove things we take for granted every day by building up from a set of axioms. Math is not just something that is useful in art, such as making curves or supporting sculptures. Mathematics itself is art, it is an expression of creativity and a display of the inherent beauty of the universe. The problem is that we teach applied mathematics from the youngest ages up until college sophomore level math major courses. And if you're not a math major, chances are you'll never experience what math truly is. It's like if you were taught that paint can be used to change the color of your walls for your entire life, and no one ever told you that you can actually paint a beautiful picture. Math is not just questions with one right answer; it is an exploration into the dark depths of the unknown. When you begin to learn math, you stand at the center of a large room, and as you learn more and more the room seems to shrink until the room is too small for you, and you start to scratch at the walls, hoping to find something that will set you free, something that will break the wall down and open a whole world to explore and interact with to your hearts desire. And when you finally do break down that wall, you're not alone. Other people come with you to explore these new concepts, all burning with the same curiosity that led you there. Mathematics is defined as the abstract science of numbers, quantity, and space. But mathematics is much more than that. If you open you eyes and open your mind to math, you will find yourself in a whole new world filled with wondrous things. The sad reality is that most people give up before they are able to do so. They give up because things got a little hard, or because they weren't taught correctly, or because they were never told that there's so much more out there for them. They resolve that they aren't good at math, but all that does is lock them in a box in the center of the room, with nowhere to go, unable to see any more than a blurred glimpse of what lies outside. The key to opening that box is simple: decide that you can.

I’m not Lazy, I am good at many things I just accept that I can’t be good at everything in life, and I will try my hardest to do as well as I can at maths, but I am never going to be a maths genius, because it is not my talent. I would never judge someone and call them lazy for being bad at English if they struggled, so why should I get called lazy for not being talented at everything? Come on everyone has different talents, learn to accept people how they are, just because people struggle doesn’t mean they aren’t trying as hard as they possible can!!!!

    IF YOU BAD AT MATH READ THIS. On the first day of elementary school you might learn 1+1=2. Some kids will get while others will not. On the second week of school you move on to 2+2=4, those kids who understood the first problem will understand this one, while the other kids will be even more confused. The kids who fell behind will go on to hate math and the kids who understood will go on to conquer it. This is an extreme example but you get the point. Math being “Hard” is a result of the snow-ball affect. From the beginning of elementary school you have been behind on math and labeled as “not good at math”, the more you think you aren’t good at math the more frustrated, anxious, and lazy you become. Every time you approach a math problem you panic, you give up. From the beginning of elementary school you have been successful at math, the most simple type: addition and subtraction, but being good at simple math (that any child can be good at) also snow-balls into confidence. This confidence with the basics allows you to attack new problems. I admit it that confidence is not enough to succeed, but it is a variable in the equation. When approaching a difficult multi step math problem it requires a type of focus and critical thinking, these skills can be built by anyone with a normal brain. But sadly, the successful person develops this skill from confidently practicing math for most of his life while the other person does not. So if you’re that other person trying to get better at math my advice to you is this. First, get the thought that you are not good at math out of your head. Ok maybe you are not Einstein, but you are definitely as qualified as the millions of other people who have conquered math, so stop telling yourself that you are not as good as everyone else, because you are. Maybe you were that one kid who just did not get 1+1=2 right off the bat, you probably could have learned it if the class hadn’t moved on, but you were six years old, you had no control of that. Unless you think you have some sort of brain damage, you are more than qualified; you are just as qualified as a six year old that is learning what 2+2 is. Second, when solving math or even understanding math, look at it as if it were a puzzle that you know you can solve, you will soon find out every puzzle is different and challenging in its own way. Third, you must THINK! I can’t emphasize this enough. When you think you fully understand how to do something, think again. You have to learn to think about different math concepts creatively, you have to think outside of the box, even when you think you know it. This means connecting it with what you have learned in the past, understanding different applications it could have, and just imagining it inside your head, you must be creative. This helps when you’re in the process of trying to understand something as well. Fourth, you have to be able to simplify what you’re doing or the steps you’re doing into simple sentences, this is very important when there are many steps. For example, what is a square root? The square root of a number is equal to a number times itself, simple. Fifth, know that math is the language of the universe, and that if you want understand the world around you, you must understand math. Without math science math would not exist and science is what we use to discover the universe. Finally, know that you know the theoretical steps to succeed you must know the practical steps. What you must do is fill in where you fell behind. You have to go back to the aspects of math you don’t know very well and work your way from the bottom up, you MUST apply the first five steps to your learning process, if you do; I guarantee you will succeed. Once you have caught up to the rest of the pack, all the work you have put in will not be for nothing. You will have built critical thinking, confidence, creativity and focus. Not only will you have caught up, you will EXCEL, If and only if you CONTINUE to apply the five steps. This will most likely not be an issue because they will become a habit from practice.

    The statement that "I don't like math" is a common expression that you hear in the United States. If you speak to kids in Asia or Europe, you will experience a higher percentage of them saying that they like math. If doing well at math, or liking math were genetic, then how does a population that is as genetically different from each other as those found in Europe or Asia both find math intriguing, but the kids in the United States mostly detest the subject? The answer is that we, in the United States, are teaching math wrong. Unfortunately, much of our math education emphasizes rote memorization of procedures and formulas, instead of learning to think in a mathematical way. Hence, children in our country look at math as a form of drudgery instead of as a way to discover more about the world. We have to change the way we teach math in this nation, if we want our kids to take an interest in it, and therefore be competitive in the global economy - an economy which rewards those who are mathematically adept.

    sajid zoubair Of course those who are American Caucasian have European ancestry That just proves my point even further. If math were an inherited ability, then Europeans and Americans should perform similarly in mathematics, since they share the same gene pool. However, since they are both from the same gene pool, and yet standardized tests show that European kids score far better in math than American kids, then it stands to reason that the fundamental determinant of mathematical proficiency is not hereditary, but is in fact the result of the differing educational environments which nurture mathematical proficiency in varying degrees.

Part of the reason I quit college was because I was terrified of having to repeat my math courses.

    StrickenWithFear maybe you just need to change your mindset. Like not having a username that's...stricken with fear :) I can't solve your anxiety, but I know from personal experience that the best way to get rid of it is to confront it, instead of running away. NEVER run away from your problems or things that scare you. They just become scarier and scarier. If you introduce yourself to basic concepts first that you might not be anxious about, then mastering those, work your way up, it might help. Don't let anxiety surrounding math bully you into not going to college or getting a degree for a profession that you find yourself interested in, if that's what you want to do. Good luck :)

    "study hard and then fail exams" I never understood that. people must have very different definition of study. in my book its to review and practice UNTIL I understand the material. If you stop any point before that its just reading your notes. even without understanding fully i would be able to do the problems instinctively when i study hard. (a little secrete here, up till college there are only 5-6 types of questions in each chapter so there really is no excuse to fail) so how could you study "hard" and fail an exam. that means that in all of your studying you never understood half the material? i can see studying but getting C's but not failing. that is impossible. even in classes that I was terrible at (LA and still am) i never studied hard and failed. with the exception of having a huge douche teacher and the class average was like 30% (surprisingly not uncommon in major universities) there is no excuse to failing a class. also, I was a tutor in math for while and what i notices about people who study "hard" is A. they are usually full of shit. they barely even opened the book yet alone study. B. they started way to late. in the education. i.e. they are in precalc and somehow they never really understood algebra. so now they have to study two subjects at the same time and they just get farther and farther behind.

    Coming from a person who speaks two languages and almost a third one I have to say there's a point in math in which it becomes non intuitive, it might be true for high school math, but when it comes to calculus and beyond it doesn't matters if you mentally calculate the tip everyday, or try to mentally add up everything you buy at the supermarket as I usually do, it depends more on memorization of processes and constant practice, I struggle to remember each end every derivative, immediate integral, trigonometric relationship... yet here I am, writing a comment in a language I struggled to speak a few years ago.

    +Random Dude That is completely false. You don't have to remember a single thing in calculus, or any math subject for that matter. It is a purely logical subject. If you logically go through the steps of how that result came about, it becomes far easier to understand, and memorization becomes unnecessary. Evidence: I didn't try to memorize anything in AP Calculus BC, calculus 3, or Differential Equations, and I was the top in all of my classes. This is because most of the other people strictly memorized everything without any understanding. I, on the other hand, did not memorize, and I instead sought to understand everything, which made it easier to apply the knowledge to a wider variety of scenarios.

    *I totally disagree with this person.* I have been an engineering major and I have spoken to people who are educators. Yes there is such thing of people who are bad at math. Some people are just better than others. We hate to categorize ourselves. We hate to put limits on ourselves, but the fact is some people are just not cut out to be an engineer or a mathematician. Their efficiency to arrive at a solution to a problem is not good compared to a person who is good at math. You can train and better yourself, but you will not be as good as a person who has a mathematics aptitude. To get to that person's level, you will have to work a lot harder than he did. Something that always humor me is a human being's tendency to ignore the cold hard truth that he/she has limits that they just can't break.

    Thats strangely true. With dyslexia and ADHD i trained myself to Have the self control to counter the adhd And sometimes its easier then others, Like Carving bark off a branch, I can do that get board but keep doing it because i m seeing results , Writeing a program You can run it change it Adapt it Covent( what i mean is that You have can have full understanding of how it all works(what each line of code does)) it and do what ever you want, Math you have to follow the pre set rules and formulas ( not that Programming is much different in that scene) If graphs where thought buy like driving students in a car With a map and graph showing them the speed and distance i believe people like me may have a way to Grasp the concept but with a visual instead of mental understanding (If phisics was thought my applying Every Concept and theory to reality it would just be ....That .....seeing what a formula does.....Throwing a rock a low speed 1km on at 10 and an other at 100 they could create their own visual unit or something)(not sure how much sense this makes So just try and clear up the ununderstood)(If you want)

    I, too am an engineering major. What I have gathered is that some people learn better conceptually and that is something I have rarely seen in math classes. I think many think of math as, "Here is an equation, solve it." Yet when they get to word problems that require the same steps, they get lost because they don't understand WHY. I think it is true anyone can do math, they just need need to practice and learn what exactly they are doing.

    The entire concept of learning is a process that we are just figuring out. There are entire studies dedicated to learning. At one time we believed that because one person learned something one way, everyone will learn it the same way. Speak to an educator and you will find that is not true. In our parent's day or grandparents in some cases, the terms ADD and ADHD amongst other learning disabilities were unknown. There are people who believe learning disabilities are just a myth. We just started chipping the iceberg on the mechanics of learning. We have a long way to go.

  • @TheSaltyAdmiral

    @TheSaltyAdmiral

    That is probably due to other factors like intelligence, because intelligence is a huge factor, however that will also make you fail other subjects. What this guy is trying to say is that there is no such thing as a math brain contra a history brain, yes there are useless brains, but those that have a good brain tend to be able to whatever they want, as long as they are not "lazy". I have yet to meet a brilliant student in other subjects, who just can't figure out math, given that they have invested time and energy to actually learn it. Two things that is key here is 1. Math requires more initial work because it has to be understood in addition to remembered, in other subjects you can usually get away with just remembering what you read. 2. Math, much more than any other subject I can think of requires prior knowledge. You simpy won't get to step 8 if you never understood step 7. However, this can easily be done in most other subjects. If you have a bad year in history, you will still understand what the teacher is saying next year:) Not so easy with math. So its a vicious circle its very hard to get out of. So yes I could agree to that math might be one of the more challenging subjects, and it certainly is the least forgiving. And someone will always be naturally gifted in X while others have a gift for Y or Z. However, my point stands that I have yet to meet a normal healthy and intelligent student who fails at math after putting a decent amount of work into it. But as with everything, the amount of work you have to do, depends on the individual.

    I call bullshit. I've been struggling with math all my life. I study and study and study and still am academically poor at math.

    Have you checked if you have dyscalculia. Although it’s highly unlikely. You might have it. Just be sure if you’re going to test if you have it. That it’s not because of eyesight, hearing to name few tings. That can cause math problems.
