School is not for artistic minds. If you're lucky you'll come out of it unscathed, or even better you are capable of being both artistic and an intellectual. I was super artistic as a child. I would draw on EVERYTHING. Books, hw planners, tests, anything. Instead of being encouraged I was shamed all my school years for loving to draw. I was made to feel stupid for having zero interest in academics and pouring over my sketch books all the time. Its one thing if other kids bully you but its another if the adults who are supposed to build you up are the ones tearing at you. It got to a point where I have anxiety and get really depressed when I try to make/draw anything. The system did a really good job crushing my soul and creativity. Its been 10 years and I'm slowly picking up the drawing pencil again. One doodle at a time, working my way back to painting and sculpting. Good for Jennifer Lawrence for getting out before it destroyed her.

I have a friend who literally think she's stupid and worthless at math even to this day just because she grew up getting insulted and sometimes physically assaulted by her father just because she got low on a math test. Her dad is no longer living with them but still the trauma and the stigma around math lingers.

I'm doing my last year in high school, but i also go to a music academy after school. I play guitare and the piano. I must say that the I used to have a lot of time to play, so I played well. nowadays i have no time to play because school is taking all my time & I still have to study 6 years. School really does destroy creativity, I've always wondered how well I would play If I just dropped out 😔
Nothing but relatable. I’m in college and i plan on finishing but math is a whole other language. I took algebra 3 times in high school, it was so bad i was a junior in an algebra class with freshman. And in my first 2 years of college i had to retake this specific math class 3 times before i passed. I always felt out of place too like i was so stupid and the only one that doesn’t get it. I’m glad Jen can help people with a very common insecurity. You’re not dumb Jennifer! Xoxo 💋

as someone with a learning disability i'm wondering if maybe Jennifer has a learning disability too since she struggled so much in school but hearing someone like her saying this makes me feel a lot better because when i was a kid i thought i was stupid too and bullies use to make fun of me for having a learning disability and it also made me keep to myself

I really resonate with her, I feel like just because society has chosen a specific way to teach and this line determines academic ability, doesn’t mean it’s a good system for every person. We all learn differently we all think differently and some people are a genius in math & some a genius at making people feel emotion. We need a different measuring stick I think and also to stop saying bc someone has high grades this is smart as if someone who hasn’t finished school is not smart. I think that’s dumb lol. 😜

I don't think she said that mathematics was not important (as a universal species, we would not be able to function without it). I think she was just acknowledging that while maths is important, it is still only one part of a wide spectrum of skills and abilities that an individual may have and thus it should be used as an instrument measure each person's ability to contribute to society. That Albert Einstein quote comes to mind, 'Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid'.
@dannykumite

school system was created to produce functional adults, so you can take one person educated in place A, put them in place B, and get consistent result. Certain people will do well in this system. But our brain aren't wired consistently so some children will have to suffer through this. With computer and AI on the horizon, we will have to change how we view intelligence and educate better.

saimon174666 you’re dumb for thinking that math is only about calculating tips
This goes to show that our traditional way of determining intelligence is flawed. She clearly has high intelligence - she is not only witty and fast on her feet, the way she spontaneously reasons about deep meaningful subjects in interviews at occasions (when interviewers dig a little deeper than the usual fun) is inspiring.
I'm at uni, I still struggle while everyone just freaking gets it😪

I’m struggling with algebra so much and I’m only in 8th grade. My dream is to be an actress and what adds on to my struggle is that I under that I won’t need this kind of math in my later life practically at all. My mom is an ultrasound technician and I asked her when she ever used the math she was taught in school and she said never did she use the algebra she was taught. It calms me to know that successful people also struggled with this subject, since she is a great role model of who I want to be in the future.
So relatable. This is how I’m feeling in maths class.

She’s so relatable. Is good to see a very famous person acting like this: just Normal.
I definitely have to put way more work into math than the average person, which sucks and makes me feel stupid at times. But unlike the average person, I can sit down to a guitar or piano and music flows out of me without ever having had one lesson. Math is much more vital to our every day human work and operations. My flavor of intelligence may not contribute to my future or survival, but it’s something little that I can be proud of...
I relate with her about math so much, I'm going through that rn

Poor math always getting a bad wrap. I think a lot has to do with both the teacher and the way it's being taught but also confidence within yourself. I struggled with math in school but just had to do it at uni 10years later and it was a totally different much more positive experience.
I feel like everyone has at least one subject they struggle with and I definitely relate with the topic of science, math I’ve always found ok but lately I’m turning into someone who despises math because I’m getting worse as it gets harder

@maxinator2002

@@blossom5831 That’s not true. I personally love math, but that’s not because I’m “smart enough.” It’s because I appreciate the often unseen beauty in mathematics (one of my favorite examples is the Gaussian Integral; although it’s a single variable problem, it requires multi variable calculus to solve, and the result is incredible, so anyone interested should definitely check it out). Intelligence isn’t restricted to one’s mathematical and scientific abilities. Intelligence can also be about how well you understand other people, or how strategically and effectively you can act in a difficult situation. Many people are smart for different reasons, so if someone doesn’t like math, that doesn’t mean that they lack intelligence; it simply means that their intelligence may have to do with something other than math. Perhaps they’re really emotionally intelligent. For the record, I do wish that math wasn’t as hated as it is, and I honestly think that the common negative opinion towards math is largely due to it being a misunderstood subject.
