I think what makes Zenos great is *exactly* the fact that he's a total irredeemable monster, and redeeming him would destroy his entire point of being. He's every negative trait that the WoL, due to how powerful they are, could possibly have, all stuck into a single person, the willingness to fight, easily getting bored and disinterested in everything that's not a challenge and seeing fighting as it's own meaning, consequences be damned, like what we learn about the WoL from the DRK questline. The difference is that the WoL doesn't have a complete lack of empathy and understands that while they may enjoy fighting for it's own sake, they know better than to make it their one and only reason for living. Zenos just does not care about anything else, which is why his every plot is entirely to give himself a challenge. He's a shadow of the WoL, hell now he even changed Jobs to a completely new one, no doubt already mastering it by the time we see him in EW. Just as a player would change jobs between expansions because they just wanted to play something new.

Zenos is a breath of fresh morbol breath. It's a break from all the great villains we've had on Shadowbringers so far. In the end of 5.3 MSQ I was like, "Finally, these 2 assholes I can finally hate unconditionally."

If it makes you feel better, Eli isn't even a person and Emet mostly isn't one. Once you're tempered you've basically no agency. Emet was basically an evil robot by the time you meet him in game.

Honestly I didn't hate Zenos, but I wasn't thrilled about him coming back either. I think he worked well for Stormblood's story, but we'll have to see what development 6.0 brings to him

Zenos is basically Sephiroth 2.0. A bishie murder hobo set up against the protag who's characterized as more a force of nature than a man. The fact that the writer from Shadowbringers is working on Endwalker (and thus Zenos) is going to make him even better. We're going to see what Sephiroth (or at least a Sephiroth-like) looks like as a central antag done right.

I loved Zenos until I realized 4.0 was just an introduction to him in the grand scheme of things and Yoshi P has spent the past 4 years teasing us about how awesome he is and all the cool things he’s gonna do.

Zenos was only brought back bc of that dumptruck he got.

Definitely understand all the hate that Zenos gets...hell, I'll even go so far as to say he deserves it. That said, he's a "guilty pleasure villain" of mine...if such a thing even exists. I just like how simple his motivation is. No grand design to wipe out nations, no high ambition to rule the world, no sinister plot to bring about the end of existence....dude's just looking for a good fight. That's all. And I kinda like that about him since it was different from the standard FF Villain of the Day. Again, though: I'm not here to try and argue that he was worth resurrecting, in fact I fully agree he should have stayed dead. Just saying that I liked him for what he was. :P

Livia was a minor antagonist and stayed dead. Zenos was good in Stormblood, but didn't really need to come back. 6.0's gonna be weird.

Honestly, they did Livia and Rhithatyn dirty. Both of the other forgettable ARR baddies returned and became much better characters in later arcs but they never got to be cool.

@@Bladehound83 Honestly I think it was necessary for at least one Garlean to die. Shows that Eorzea is an actual threat. Could have been interesting if Livia lived and returned around the same time as Gaius. Rhithatyn...I don't remember if he actually had a personality or not. These characters were designed to be disposable villains to start off our journey. Gaius maybe had some significance to 1.0 players, but the rest...well, they played their role.

Me: *checks comments and sees the Zenos discourse* ah shit here we go again He’s not the best villain but I wouldn’t say he’s the worst. He’s functional for Stormblood but if they want to use him beyond that he needs to be developed more. He has potential and I’m just hoping they use it. Even villians like Sephiroth were actually fairly boring in their first appearance; to me, most of Sephiroth’s depth came from Crisis Core and not the original FFVII. Zenos is...divisive, to say the least. Personally, I don’t mind him at all; However, I feel like Stormblood could have put the supplementary story about him (The Hunt Begins) into the game proper and that would have improved his depiction. The wandering minstrel that unlocks the extreme trials says that Zenos is “a pitiable man who feels naught save at the edge of death.” To me, especially in patch 5.3, Zenos just seems sad. That’s the side of him I want to see; we’ve already seen him give dramatic speeches on rooftops and possess gods. I want to know about the dude who sleeps in a chair (that has to be uncomfortable, right?) and has dreamt about the apocalypse his entire life, the one who’s first and only ‘friend’ is his enemy. Let’s just hope they deliver. That being said, his English voice actor kills it though, regardless of your view on his character lmao

@@azadalamiq I like Sephiroth; I never said his intro was boring. But if we want to simplify it, he’s basically an alien momma’s boy arsonist. A snappy intro doesn’t make a great villain. Certainly Sephiroth was a step up from previous my eyes but the majority of his depth and humanity came from Crisis Core. In FF7, he does backflips, confuses Cloud, and turns into a tentacle angel. I actually really like Sephiroth. He’s iconic, he’s well-designed, and I find his fall from grace and his narrative foil to Cloud make the game better. There’s a reason why no one will shut up about the man. But a lot of my fondness for Sephiroth comes from Crisis Core. His friendship with Angeal, Genesis, and Zack ultimately made him a better character. A more understandable character. He’s a somber, lonely man, a test subject- This wasn’t supposed to turn into a Sephiroth rant, damn it- TL;DR: final fantasy villains can improve after their first appearances. But yes, lighting a town on fire is certainly a way to make a entrance.

I’m surprised people see Zenos as a villain. He’s an antagonist in the sense he is in an obstacle to overcome by the MC, but his personality and actions are more along the lines of a psychopathic rival than an actual villain. The guy saves our lives twice just for an opportunity to fight us and is so badass. I hones can’t hate him, I love him!

Here's all the scenes of Zenos from 5.0 to 5.5, including the non-voiced scenes with enough time to read (sorry, the first one I found was the Chinese dub and I don't care enough to look harder for English). He kills daddy, reclaims his body in the most contrived plot device ever, and sits in a chair for literally half of his entire screen time. Everything from about 14 to 28 minutes in his 32 minutes of screen time is him sitting in a chair, either silent or mooning over his BFF the WoL. Regardless of how literal you take it, he's a poorly written character with boring motives, very little screen presence, and worst of all.... he's easy. For all the ample buildup to the big showdown with him, it's a cakewalk. I'm willing to give characters the chance to evolve and change and become interesting. Yda, for example, was the worst, and while I don't think her reveal as Lyse was the most organically done, I appreciated her overhaul. But to bring back a boring villain only to have him sit in a damn chair and continue being boring, when he wasn't even an epic fight? Please. Spare me.

@@Prizzlesticks in the meantime, I'll take a minute to elaborate what I meant when I said he didn't sit in a chair(prior to any patch quests): When I said he didn't sit in a chair for all of ShB, I didn't mean as a disagreement with your hyperbole, but rather in disagreement with the whole fact. For most of ShB Zenos was dead, and his body possessed by an Ascian. He also didn't really "do" much cuz of his casual seppuku at the end of SB. So instead, while his corpse is possessed by an Ascian, he possessed some rando Garlean soldier and confronts his possessed self(that's as far as I am in the Estinien/Gaius subplot). But, of course, I could be totally off the mark since I'm not done with it, but that's my current take on it. But I'd love to hear more about your interpretations of his cutscenes, maybe we can both find extra clarity from this diacussion

Okay (cracks knuckles) let’s do this. Elidibus was my least favourite villain in XIV until patch 5.3. I now think he is a three dimensional character that I actually give a crap about. It took one patch for him to go from ‘meh’ to ‘compelling’. Zenos is one note, especially compared to recent antagonists, but I’m fairly confident that will change going forward. There is no reason to hate the guy, but I’m not losing my mind defending him either. He needs to be better, and more likely than not, he will.

And i'm not talking about your character, but the actual player He's just as powerful as you, he can come back from the dead as if it was a mere respawn, but he just want to kill shit and become more powerful (a common mentality in many other games) not caring at all about other people's lives, he treats his own reality as if all were just a game, as opposing to the player who cares about the world and it's characters even if it's all just a videogame and not real Also, i fear him just knowing he's somehow related to the Final Days tl;dr Zenos is actually scary af when you think about it

Zenos isn't the best villain but he's far from the worse. He's actually very entertaining especially given he's not a tragic villain like everyone else is SB or just evil for the sake of evil or a power hungry politician/Pope. Like he does the job he was given while still chasing his own ambitions without betraying either. He just wants a good fight and he holds respect for those who have desire and ambition to grow stronger and rise above their circumstances. Also his boss voice lines aren't annoying. Fucking Ilberd....

Zenos' entire arc is just a revenge plot because he lusts for you after you reject him and beat him up.

I've said the same thing, he's Sephiroth 2.0. If you like Seph, you'll like Zenos. If you like Seph but don't like Zenos, then perhaps you need to re-examine why you like Seph. That said, I'm looking forward to Zenos surpassing Seph as a central antagonist. Emet-Selch is already the best antagonist in the entire franchise, so I want to see what quality is carried from Shadowbringers to Endwalker.

Zenos super cool at the beginning of stormblood. Then every cutscene after that he kept losing his style until we killed him and he resurrected as a thorn up my ass. I’m hype to fight fandaniel and not his sidekicks sidekick, Zenos.

Zenos IS terrible, but not for the reasons you think. Honestly, he disturbs the absolute royal fuck out of me. I am terrified that I'll be fighting him and look down to see his doodler having pierced his cod piece and is so aroused that it has its own health bar, and OF COURSE, a limit break meter. He came exactly ONCE in his miserable life and will burn the fucking planet down to feel that way again. He went from genocidal sociopath to sexual assault waiting to happen, AND THAT DOESN'T MAKE IT ANY BETTER. He is the kind of person restraining orders were created to deal with.

Zenos is part of the reason why stormblood was so good. It was the first time they introduced a villain that you lose to, twice I might add. They did a good job of making him terrifying. Of course he wasn't that difficult when it actually came down to the real fight, but he was still an asshole that you looked forward to fighting and beating.

My first fight with Zenos was me shouting "I beg your fucking pardon?" -- "Ive beat up motherfucking dragons you know!?" -- "are you fucking kidding me? Your going this route?" He's just playing the you're boring card right out after all the crazy shit that you do in HeavensWard, it's like he didn't earn the right for that kind of crap. He ain't an Ascian or a magical god construct or whatever. He isnt even an interesting villain. His portfolio is, being good at fighting, being a dick and letting his underlings do the work.

@@Khalirei Well to each their own, and I find him an insufferably boring bad guy. The resonance stuff happens later in the story too. And I don't think relation to the blood of a possesed garlean really helps his case. More than anything stormbloods writing is the weakest of the expansions even if it's the one where you achieve the most. Zenos timing wise just seems a villain who should have been at the beginning of the games where the WoL isn't already a veteran fighter and someone you want to raise yourself to beat. But his place in the story is wrong. He is a villain who could have been interesting if played different but he ends up as a, "oh great it's this guy again" At least he isn't fucking Ran'jit though because the only way I can understand the warrior of varying luminosity taking it like a chump like that is that they are tripping balls on light aether at the time

Ok look, i know ive fallen for that stupid line of his and accidentally started simping for him but Zenos could turn out to be a good villain in endwalker at least. Knowing what he knows and having no moral compass or cares other than hunting us makes him (at least lore wise) a really scary evil force. Also, he pretty.
