I love the "Winter is coming" banner in your background. The Stark family motto from the _A Song of Ice and Fire_ novels is essentially a shortening of "Strong Men make Good Times, Good Times make Weak Men, Weak Men make Hard Times, Hard Times make Strong Men." And talk about a perfect banner for this song.

Big truth. Blue collard 29 here. Colorado Springs Colorado, refinery trash from Texas covering the Rockys these days with two kids. The lyricism just before that exact lyric scheme is lost on most. @4:35 I wish politicians would look out for miners, not just minors on an island somewhere. That one is tough, we want the heads of tyrants, but does the day to day become warped with past tense shit that should of never happened to begin with? To me it just simply says here it is today, we the people heard the news too, we're furious but so many fucking days happened since then and what is the result and why are 'mine' still hungry?

That line, so i can sit out here and waste my life away, drive back home and drown my troubles away is why i had a break down and almost drove into on coming traffic 10 years ago. It's so true. My dad left when I was 17, I was a junior in highschool, supposed to graduate in 2016. I told him I would be okay, and I really believed it, but unsurprisingly I was not. I was already not doing well, I had a very tumultuous childhood. When I was just 6 years old my mom warned me not to hit my head because I would go to sleep forever and not see anyone again. I had already developed sleeping as a coping mechanism, so I tried to lean off my bed to hit my head on the carpet floor rather than the tile so it wouldn't hurt as bad when I went to sleep. So my father leaving to move across to the other side of the country was a kick in the teeth when I was already on my knees. Internally I crumbled and once I turned 18 my high school terminated my enrollment due to poor attendance because I would be gone for weeks at a time crying and contemplating suicide. No one gave a shit about me, people I called friends didn't send a single word of concern my way during that whole struggle. I tried to escape in video games, youtube and other internet activities. Sometimes it helped, other times I couldn't escape all of the media telling me that I was an awful oppressor ruining the lives of women and minorities because I was born with white skin and a Y chromosome. My own mother couldn't conceive of what to do with me and wouldn't even try to figure out what was causing my suicidal thoughts. She tried to get me institutionalized into a mental ward multiple times. All I needed was someone to extend a hand and not blame me for being broken, just hear my cries and wipe my tears. It's a miracle I'm alive, and I'm glad that I am now. I'm doing much better, but it pains me to see young men going through what I did and worse. When I try to talk to women about these issues that young men are facing they are often dismissive and play the "well it's worse for women" card when I never tried to make it a competition. Our country needs to heal. Our boys need our love and support. We need to stop playing the divisive identity games and get back to caring for people.

Exactly this. It is sooo deep and layered. I’ve watched about 60 react videos now and every time it just expands and hits different- but yes THIS- the attack on young men- it’s all these ways. Just like the line about the obese milking welfare- that’s not only individuals misusing the safety net, it’s also the banks and corporations on corporate welfare, and the money laundering going on over there near Russia. $700 per household in Maui, $13B to zelensky. It’s a damn shame.

"Oliver Anthony really does punch down on the poor. The lives of ordinary working people are being torn apart by the rich, he laments, but we can fix it if we cut welfare - and taxes too. Listening to the lyrics in that context, I came to understand why the song had gone viral among rightwing figures in the US. It’s a classic example of the divisive narrative that bosses have used to pit worker against worker since the days of Joe Hill. If the poor are fighting one another over racial hierarchy or cultural grievance, their anger will be directed away from the people responsible for their plight - the rich who exploit those in work and abandon those in need." Billy Bragg 2023

@@DjWellDressedMan that's the dumbest take I've ever seen. The whole reason people are struggling is because of insane inflation and taxes to pay for the totally corrupt build back better push and welfare state. If funding the welfare state creates more recipients to the welfare state it's NOT doing it's job. The point of the song is a lot of us wouldn't be struggling if we didn't need to prop up people exploiting the system, and the system doesn't even properly help many of the people who are straight up starving.

This song deeply resonated with me, Oliver's genuine emotions matched the deep frustration that is all too common for the once 'mighty' middle class. Every government solution involves us all giving up a little more. The common people must realize we are ALL just cogs in the machine, put away our political boundaries to stand together against the corrupt ruling class. I will be a loyal fan of Oliver Anthony.

You hit it right on the head... "Singer/songwriters in this genre are the best storytellers" of culture, society, etc. I'm 28 and listen to Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan nonstop because of the thought-provoking lyrics and amazing stories that are told from during that time period. I am beginning to search for more folk singer/songwriters that can give the same music as Woody and Bob. Oliver Anthony is a refreshing contemporary artist and this song is one of the most powerful folk songs I've heard.

This isn't a fluke and I hope he doesn't end up getting the one hit wonder treatment when he has so much to say. People need to keep following this guy, even after the fire dies down. Dude has some serious talent, both as a performer and a writer.

My husband and I got married young, (19, 21). My husband decided he wanted to work in the oilfields to get a skilled trade. He got a job in the desert in the middle of nowhere. I didn't want to be without him so we went together with our baby. He worked like a dog, 90 hours a weak maintaining oil tankers, worked his way up, but it was a rough few years. It was very isolated, we lived in a camper, spotty electricity, no wifi, no laundry facilities, I washed clothes in a barrel like we were out on the prairie, but we made it, listening to this song makes me think about my husband stumbling home absolutely exhausted from a days work, covered in fuel, and just needing a hug. He would hold our baby and I would hold him and he would just sleep. That line about kicking men down hit me so hard 😢 I made damn sure my husband didn't have to do anything when he got home, but I was the only woman on the yard, most wives were far away in the houses these men paid for. Brutal lives and then rich academics and politicians pontificate on the evils of men amd it infuriates me

[Verse 1] I've been sellin' my soul, workin' all day Overtime hours for bullshit pay So I can sit out here and waste my life away Drag back home and drown my troubles away [Pre-Chorus] It's a damn shame what the world's gotten to For people like me and people like you Wish I could just wake up and it not be true But it is, oh, it is [Chorus] Livin' in the new world With an old soul These rich men north of Richmond, Lord knows they all Just wanna have total control Wanna know what you think, wanna know what you do And they don't think you know, but I know that you do 'Cause your dollar ain't shit and it's taxed to no end 'Cause of rich men north of Richmond [Verse 2] I wish politicians would look out for miners And not just minors on an island somewhere Lord, we got folks in the street, ain't got nothin' to eat And the obese milkin' welfare [Verse 3] Well, God, if you're 5-foot-3 and you're 300 pounds Taxes ought not to pay for your bags of fudge rounds Young men are puttin' themselves six feet in the ground 'Cause all this damn country does is keep on kickin' them down [Pre-Chorus] Lord, it's a damn shame what the world's gotten to For people like me and people like you Wish I could just wake up and it not be true But it is, oh, it is [Chorus] Livin' in the new world With an old soul These rich men north of Richmond, Lord knows they all Just wanna have total control Wanna know what you think, wanna know what you do And they don't think you know, but I know that you do 'Cause your dollar ain't shit and it's taxed to no end 'Cause of rich men north of Richmond [Outro] I've been sellin' my soul, workin' all day Overtime hours for bullshit pay

Yes, thank you for that great commentary and heartfelt way you brought this to us. Yes, today was the first time I ever heard the sing and Oliver, I agree this is so US as a country right now. I think of the people driving home from work right now and thinking of the things Oliver's singing about. His insight is well beyond his years He took me back to a place that we all want to go back to when folks were real and this country was real. But the Rich men have their control all over us, the middle class and backbone of this country! -Thank you sir, this is the 4th commentary I have viewed and ALL of the commentary was VERY similar in the effect it has had on the viewer -Thank you and God Bless you!
