Only thing better than catchin' big stripe is watching your buddy's video of y'all catchin' 'em...nice! Gonna have vicariously enjoy that on your waters until I can come up and go out with ya. The Cumberland River in TN has some monsters in in and we're gonna learn how to get 'em now and get off the local lakes which have (sadly) been overfished and just aren't worth it anymore. As always, appreciate you sharing what you know with us, rock on!

Love it when a new Mike Smedley video comes out! We have all learned something new from these videos. I tell all of my striper fishing friends about your channel. They cannot believe it when I tell them that you are showing exactly how to catch stripers in fresh and saltwater. Most people wont even tell you what lake they were on. LOL. Thanks for all of the information that you share with us. R.Drake

Mike, awesome video! I've been watching your channel every chance I get. I just moved to TN near Boone and Watauga Lake. Boone is full of stripers and I plan on getting some. My background is mostly largemouth bass up north and some saltwater mangrove fishing near Ft. Meyers Florida. But catching stripers is alien to me so with your help I hope to put them in the boat. Thank you so much for all that you do, much appreciated by this old padawan in training.

I really appreciate that brother!! I was extremely lucky that I was able to start fishing at a very young age, guiding when I was 15. I know most people will never have that freedom to fish every day like me so I really love sharing things that I have learned. Now MORE THAN EVER, we need kids and families fishing Together. If I can help them have a bit more success here and there maybe they will fish more and more. Fishing is a bonding activity for families especially. We need to water that seed. 😁👍👍

Thanks Mike great info. I try to do what I can with my inferior equipment. I have a Lawrence Elite 7 chirp fish finder / GPS. For some reason I have no luck Beyond 10 mph before the fish finder will not read. I have set transducer to the lowest point I can without risking it too close to the motor or too low near the Keel where it could get hit. Maybe I just need to upgrade my equipment?

  • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS

Thanks brother!!! Tilt the rear edge of the transducer down 1/4” or so. That will increase water pressure against the face of the transducer. Lower it in small steps until it works. 👍👍👍

Absolutely! But in summer you can’t go as shallow because surface temps are upper 80’s you have to fish in or very near the thermocline in summer. It’s usually between 20 and 30’ deep. I like channel edges at that time of year. In Late fall to early spring you can drift shallower water near points mostly. More people use these spoons in southern lakes than in the salt. They are extremely popular on lakes like Lanier and Murray 🙏🙏🙏 thank you!👍👍👍

Kind of. There are many times a year that you can run a thumper or a splasher on lakes. the Stripers flock right up under your boat and they just stay with you. Definitely recommend it if you haven’t tried it “thump em up” makes a good one.

  • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS

Yes sir. I took it down because it was really confusing many people. For instance, you have to subtract a percentage of the depth depending if the target sits on the bottom or is suspended. The only constant is the that a return is exactly the distance from the transducer that it says in the scale on top. As if you attached a tape measure to the transducer and pulled it out and down to the fish. If that fish is right at the 50ft mark on the scale the tape measure would read 50ft. You have to picture that tape running out AND down and not just out. Hope that helps.

In lakes they are deeper, but you can catch piles of them. In salt they migrated up to the Massachusetts area where water is still cool.

Great video and info! It looks like using a " thumper" is not needed by you guys, but does anyone you know use it to try to promote feeding activity? It's pretty popular here in Texas. Thanks, ang good fishing!

I’ve tried it in the saltwater but had limited success compared to freshwater. The best attraction in salt is a running motor and regular boat noise, transducers clicking away. In the salt, commercial fishing boats throw bycatch over the rails all day long. They follow the clam lobster crab and Menhaden boats for east food so they have no problem hanging by our boat all day. 👍👍

Believe it or not, 80% of all Striper lakes fish exactly the same way. There are a few outliers, but generally what works on one lake works on another even if it’s 1000 miles away. Check out my freshwater playlist. It has it all in there. 👍👍👍👍

Absolutely! But in summer you can’t go as shallow because surface temps are upper 80’s you have to fish in or very near the thermocline in summer. It’s usually between 20 and 30’ deep. I like channel edges at that time. 🙏🙏🙏 thank you!

Stripers in lakes can be super difficult to catch consistently if you don’t use a few very specific methods. There aren’t a whole lot of methods, but they are very potent. To the extent that two boats can fish 20 ft from each other and 1 boat catches 30 Stripers and the other will zero. Things like line size, leader length, hook size, etc can separate 1st place from 100th place in a tournament even if they fish right next to each other. This playlist has lots of details on those methods, incorporating just a few of them can make a huge difference. kzread.info/head/PLcA3CtRjc9AYKfGiD4TZB6qtM2nONNm6F. Yep. They are a saltwater migrating fish that has been trapped in a closed ecosystem. They still feel urges to move all over the lake at certain times. If you’re new to fishing for them it can be extremely difficult, but once you understand them you can use their tendencies against them. Like in spring they try to spawn so they go way up the rivers that feed the lakes. Fish way up river and way in the backs of creeks in spring. They follow the current and river channels to get way up shallow so get up there and catch em😁😁😁.
