Very informative video. There is a lake near where I live that has land locked stripers. The lake is fed by the calaveras river and the stripers do spawn in the lake. The lake record fish is 30 lbs. Most fish run around 4 to 7 lbs. Sometimes those fish are hard to figure out. What works one day will not work the next day. Thanks for your videos.

I’ve caught plenty of stripers on lures and live mackerel, but today was the first night I nailed one on chicken liver. Affordable, abundant, and I pass a grocery store on my way to my local boat ramp in York, Maine. Pretty cool catching a Striper on chicken liver, lol! Thanks man, from one sailor to another.

Hi Mike, I've been fishing on the south side of the Cape Cod Canal since the '70s. I've always tried to be smarter than the fish, but sometimes I try something new and nothing. "Many" of my fishing ways are the same (it's like you've been watching me, lol!) "and" almost identical to yours, but there is so much more! It's been a great season, and tomorrow my wife and I will head out to Elizabeth Islands and try our luck at a little trolling (my style), just a little different from the commoner. Tight Lines my friend.

You’re in a beautiful area my brother. Sometimes our success can hold us back from experiencing new things. I’m as guilty as anyone at sticking with what I KNOW will work. I highly recommend fishing with different people as often as possible. Invite people that you’ve never fished with before. This can really break the monotony and expose you to different techniques. There are cool things within your comfort zone because you have built it with time and hard work. Expose yourself to someone else’s comfort zone built the same way, but different. Learn from each other. Catching Stripers is awesome, but catching Stripers in a new way is PRICELESS. It keeps old salts like yourself young😁👍❤️.

I checked out those rods online. I have some 10 ft Okumas for planer boarding and surely I could use in my arsenal a 7.5 footer for casting cut bait like that...a few of 'em maybe. Just found you and subscribed. Great content! I keep a boat on Lake Ouachita here in Arkansas, great stiper lake, but have only fished for them with a guide. 60,000+ acres, 25+ miles long, 150 deepest, old river channels. Grew up black bass fishing, want to learn to fish the stripers. For my 25' vintage cruiser, need new electronics, only have room for a 9" or 12" on a mounting bracket. Can you recommend some combinations of depth finders and transducers I should be looking at? And stay under $1500, closer to $1000 is better? Thanks!

Anchor is more reliable. I can take a nap if i want. Spot lock is fine in small doses, but i wouldn’t be able to relax with 10 lines out for 10 hours. If I was constantly fishing different spots for 30 minutes per spot in heavier current I would probably use it (and have used it). It’s no possible for me to fill a book ahead of time. However we DO offer jump on trips for free if you can be super flexible and ready to go with pretty short notice. The weather has been so bad with high winds that we were constantly moving trips. Im hesitant to plan anything too far out. Shoot me an email if you’re interested. Thanks for your understanding. wrong with braid, in order to cast better using braid over mono when chunking, wet the spool of braid first, , see briad when placed on the spool , it tightens up , when dry it causes birdcaging and tons of problems, wet the braid on the spool and it will sail better then mono, ! you still need a length of mono or florocarbon the length of the rod on the end end up at the weight and hook, this give you spring action because braid has no stretch maybe 3% if any.

  • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS

I’m not sure what you are saying is wrong. I never mentioned castability or birds nests in this video. I only spoke on the lack of stretch that braid has. Braid is great for many applications. I use it every day, but NEVER for chunking.

I have found hitting the lower belly ridge (where bottom scales converge) on the bait usually is best. Prevents from hook going back in on the bait during hook-up, but also holds the guts in a bit more. You really have 'hit' the convergence, you will know when you do because it can be a PITA to punch through sometimes. Just my 2c. Big fan of the vids, thought other viewers might benefit. No wrong way, just my way.

Great info brother. Thanks! Hooking the heart usually holds the guts in place, but fish were finicky and hooks were not sliding out right so we hooked shallower. It’s pretty rare for us to use chunks this small. We normally use half’s where the guts always stay in no matter what. . But again-finicky. 👍👍
