    It's assuring and refreshing listening to a Fisherman that has a wealth of knowledge. As I've spent thousands of hours fishing for striper, all bass, catfish, the old fashioned way with frozen anchovies, etc and sometimes not catching anything. Was raised fishing this way. I then started using lures, better baits and getting into bigger fish. I wish I had this video 40 yrs. ago! I grew up and fished the California Delta area, San Francisco Bay. Thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge and this video!! I'll pass it along.

    @@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS - hey Mike, we tried out the Zakk Royce boards this weekend. I already have 50lb braid on the rods from our last Old Drum trip at the coast, and planning on using 30lb fluoro for the 5 ft leaders from the swivel down, but the clips on the boards don't seem to hold this braided line, just slides down. Even with the TOS twist and placing behind the pin ( I honestly don't understand the pin part with the twist, won't that freeze it in place when it tightens on the pin?). Only had little A rigs behind them, no weight. Any tips for using with braid? Will I need to respool all the rods with mono for the clips to work? Headed to SML this Sunday 11th, any tips would be appreciated!

  • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS

    @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS

    3 жыл бұрын

    There’s a black clip on the release that sets the tension stronger on the clips. Yes the pin keeps the clip from releasing so you manually remove it. You really should switch to mono for bait fishing. You will hook a lot less fish with braid because the fish will feel the rod tip and drop the bait. It’s important for the fish to feel no resistance so it holds the bait long enough to get hooked. Braid has no stretch so the fish feels to tip and drops the bait a lot faster.

  • @crockett3869

    @@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS thanks, probably why one board was surging back and forth also, no stretch. So when you loop around the pin, it is supposed to lock it in place, gotcha there too. Looking at the clip online, I don't see the black tensioner clip. I see the black part in the middle but it's not evident what to do to make any adjustment? Thanks for helping a noob understand it, hopefully it helps others with same questions. bottomdwellerstackle.com/product/zakk-royces-planer-boards/ Guess I will try to unspool my newish braid back to the holder and replace with mono this week!

  • @crockett3869

    @crockett3869

    I found what I was not getting. The spring inside can slide forward or back to increase or decrease the tension, didn't realize that. Ok, still changing to 30lb mono with 30lb flouro leaders and we should be ready for SML. Hopefully we can find the shad in the backs of shallow flats next week. We have some A rigs and 6" Money Minnows and similar if not. Good camping weather!

  • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS

    @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS

    Жыл бұрын

    Thanks brother!! It’s just a tweak I use to eliminate the big split ring from getting caught all jammed up laying against the post. The large split ring can be bad news if you fish a lot. Sooner or later your gonna pull the board up and in toward the boat to keep from hitting a tree or some other obstruction and the line will get caught in the split ring. It’s definitely not a big time epidemic or anything, but I prefer to use a loop made of wire. 120lb stainless wire. 👍👍

    Another great video, as per usual I learned a lot. One question, why do you use an offset circle hook with planer boards?

  • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS

    @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS

    3 жыл бұрын

    I use an offset because I can get away with it while moving slowly. When sitting still the line is slack, so the fish can swallow the bait. An offset hook won’t slide out of the stomach as easily so you gut hook more fish.

    As usually, you put out a great informative video for us newbies wanting to get into planar boards and floats. I really enjoy all your videos, everything from cheap boat alarms and systems to things like this one, how to catch big stripes. I have only one question, you said no weights on the shallow shore side of the boat, so to reach that 30 foot depth on the other channel side you only use 1/4 to 1/2 oz weight to get your bait down to the fish? i am sure you probably have a video on that with more detail but I can't remember if you did. Keep up the great and informative videos. I am a big fan. tight lines brother.

    Thanks for the kind words brother!! I appreciate it!! I still stay very light on the weight over deep water. I may add a 3/8 oz split shot, but not always. I’ll usually just put more line out behind the board so the bait can swim down. The weight of the hook is usually enough to force the bait down in a more natural fashion. Thanks for watching!!

    You're saying to go with the current (Current + 1mph = desired boat speed), is there a limit to the current speed or boat speed you pull them in and change techniques?

  • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS

    @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS

    4 жыл бұрын

    We usually start at a medium speed, around 1 mph faster than the current and then adjust from there. Sometimes we crawl down to just .2 over the current and sometimes crank it up to 2mph over. Since we use little weight the boat speed moves the bait up and down the water column. That first fish is the trickiest, once you find what works I’m am quick to duplicate it. Never fight the current though, I cross it sometimes if I have to, but never fight it. This was just earlier this month. I talk a bit about current here thanks for the comment brother!!kzread.info/dash/bejne/n3apwa1pmNK3Xdo.html

    @@MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS Thanks Mike, I was wondering if you ever use this in a 2-2.5 mph current, or is this just in areas that max current is under 2. I am just picturing that eel flying by a staged up bass behind a rock at 4mph, and it watching it go by

  • @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS

    @MikeSmedleyOLDSCHOOLSTRIPERS

    4 жыл бұрын

    Jeff Brinkman This is definitely not the best way to target Bass staged on isolated structure necessarily. (Like a small rock pile) It’s best to pull along structural lines (long points covered in rocks) and in open water. In open water, when the current is running 2 mph the bass are moving with it looking for bait also moving with it and using it, so pulling eels at 3mph only looks like 1mph to the Stripers. It’s incredible how these fish use currents. They know exactly where to be. The tides will carry them in and out with schools of bait, they are very strong. I want my baits to look like they are rolling with the tides. 👍. Great question brother!
