    I have 3 heaters for my RSR250. 2 online at all times, one on standby. In my basement, temps can drop like a rock so no chances taken.

    Am i the only one who thinks its a smart idea to buy undersized heaters so they dont switch on and off as often and thereby increase in lifespan?

    I understand you about equipment failure and agree. However, I’ve had a lot of tanks and a lot of heaters and I actually only had one heater fail in almost 30 years or so of active aquarium keeping. It failed because I dropped and broke the glass case. My fault. I stopped using the glass ones after that. On top of that I totally disagree with you about the failure and replacing of the controller. What you’re showing there is an InkBird. I have a lot of InkBird controllers doing a lot of different things and I have never had a InkBird controller fail. InkBird is my go to for a lot of controller equipment as a result. I’ve been using them for 15 maybe 20 years...?

    If the heating element has power, it's on, so you'll need some way of turning it on/off based on the tank temperature.

    The ok ne heater I cant reccomend at all are the colbalt neotherms. They have the highest fail rate I've ever seen with a heater, to the point where our store has had to stop stocking then due to the complaints. Besides that, i always reccomend a temp controller. Those brs heaters look pretty nifty too, can't believe no one thought about a audible alert, that seems so obvious now that I think about it.

    An audio alert doesn't stop the malfunction nor does it help when you are gone at work. It needs a auto shut off redundancy circut like Finnex does so that if it fails on. The controller senses the heat spike and kills the power to it.

  • @BRStv

    @BRStv

    Hey John, We haven't tested the AquaEL heater, so I'm afraid that we can't compare. They certainly do look similar, so it's possible that they're produced by the same manufacturing facility.

    do you think 100 watts is good enough for a 15 gallon or should i go for the 300 watt to leave me some headroom ?

  • @BRStv

    @BRStv

    Unless you have abnormally cold ambient room temperature, a 100w heater will do the trick for a 15 gallon system.

    Bulk Reef Supply thanks for your answer. changing the subject. I have big a problem. I have Ick and parasites in my DT,I tried to Qt them but was too stressful for the fish so they still in there and I’m medicating with reef safe medication I don’t have corals just invertebrates. I got a 135 gallon I’m cycling it and my idea was transfer my life stock to the new tank but after this circumstance what I can do? What is safe to transfer and what no? Are my invertebrates carrying ick eggs? If so what I can do??? My blue tang still with white/ bumpy skin today is my 3 rd of medicating her in how long I should see results? I don’t want to wait so long and waist time in something that is no working but I don’t want to rush it either 🤦🏼‍♀️

    Each manufacturer and heater type (glass vs titanium vs plastic) have different ratings. Of course, the ambient room temperature plays a role too. If you're talking about the BRS heaters, we suggest a max tank volume of 40 gallons, 75 gallons, 100 gallons, and 200 gallons for our 100w, 200w, 300w, and 600w heating elements, respectively.

    It really depends on the heater controller at hand. Many heaters have a built-in thermostat, so you could pair those types of heaters with an external controller, like the InkBird, for backup protection from overheating.
