BRStv - Saltwater Aquariums & Reef Tanks
BRStv is all about using science to answer questions about saltwater aquariums and reef tanks. Our mission is to dispel the myths and prove the theories behind the saltwater ecosystems we keep in our homes.
With SO much unexplored frontier within our hobby it's our goal to lead the exploration and share our findings with you...the reefing community!

We miss you Ryan, it's too bad the folks running the company you sold did not keep you on as a leadership consultant and follow your lead...
Love the series. Getting back into the hobby again and binge watched! So much info…Only thing I’m not clear on is if you use live rock, can you use the ammonium chloride and nitrifying bacteria method to cycle? Will this just kill off all the good stuff in the rock? My plan is using caribsea arag-alive sand and 50% live rock from an established reef tank from my LFS.
Keep the shavings from smashing rocks and use instead of sand🧐
Will that 4ft t5 light a 5ft tank?
Great information! would be better to show the corals more often instead of your face. I mean that is why people are actually here.
This budget is highly inaccurate. Number one pet smart has all in one tank kits for a 40 gallon. I just got a 55 gallon for 140 and a stand for 200. Plus think of how much money you’ve spent in dog food over the years compared to only having fish.
I thought you didn’t want a lot of shimmer because it’s not an even layer of intensity? I could of sworn I watched a video of you guys reviewing the Chinese box lights and said the bulbs weren’t great because the angle of the edges create laser like light spots ?? I’m kind of confused
Hi, to neutralize the smell of muriatic acid, I did a wash with a pressure washer and then a whole day in water, but it still has a bit of a smell.... I have to prepare 200 liters of salt water and let the rocks soak for a week ? before starting the aquarium.
You can set up all with fish and coral in one day and f**k the next day. RIP
Is phase 2 published or not yet ???
How do you remove them from the stem/ disc?
I can attest to the high nutrients causing cyano being false. My tank was overstocked with fish and my nitrates were 25-35 and phosphates were .18-.25 depending on how long ago my last water change was and I was carbon dosing daily. I got rid of all but one fish, did a 50% water change and cut back carbon dosing. Within a week my nitrates were 5 and phosphates were 0.05. I've since cut out carbon dosing as my protein skimmer is able to keep up with the bio load and my numbers are now stable with a monthly 20% water change. Within about 3 weeks of getting my parameters low and stable I've had a huge cyano out break. I plan to break the tank down soon (unrelated to the cyano, I just got a new tank and have been slowly moving coral over as the new tank matures) so I'm not worried about fixing it, I just thought it was interesting.
Does it have to be this complicated and expensive to have a saltwater tank? I have a tank, live sand, a filter, lights, a heater and I’m stuck knowing what to do now. I’m never going to invest in this setup, but I want to know is there a simple way to keep the water healthy for livestock? I have some crabs I’m trying to keep alive
Just picked up a complete 220 set up for $200. Price went down fast. Miss content from Ryan.

Received my order along with my new apex, board, and swag! 🥰 Love everything about BRS. Big thanks! 🙏
ALRIGHT!
hey dude, i was wondering how often they have to change that filter floss out? must be often?
LOVE BRS!!!
Gonis looks very cool when they are reaching for light and after watching this I realized why mine dont have that look! I also want to ask if its ok to keep white at 1 both warm and cool white and blues uv at 50? I have a 20 long frag tank and two 95 watt lights so I need to turn way down! Which is the color that gives the most par whites or blues? I also have some 20 watts I could use though and have 3 of them but I have to modify the rim and they are fluval sea nanos but heavy on whites. Which would be better do you think for such a wide and shallow and narrow tank? Lps and softies like zoas and 1/4 is shrooms, plus the rack sits at about 9 inches deep only! so very very shallow!
I’ve always mixed mine in a bucket for 10 minutes and poured it in, I’ve never had a problem
I followed his advice and never had a problem my first year
Only speaking for myself, but I think this is the most important reefkeeping video I've seen after 5-6 years consuming content and participating in the hobby.
Thank you! Nail on the head…
100%. Thank you for everything you do for the hobby, Ryan!
Fantastic presentation!
Great presentation Ryan. I was at the show but missed this unfortunately. I hope that you can make more videos like this in the future maybe thru an independent page. Brs isn’t the same since you parted ways! This hobby needs you! 🙏🏾🙏🏾
This was such a great presentation. As a new reefer, I am always humbled by how much there is to learn in this amazing hobby! Ryan has been such a positive influence on my adventure and I hope to meet you at an event sometime in the near future!
Your problem is you speak too fast and you don't fully explain what you're talking about
if anyones seeing this still, don't use vinegar to clean pumps, try 10% muriatic acid just use some caution like gloves and do it outside
Will the turf scrubber also remove/reduce diatoms, or only focus on the algae that would normally grow on the rocks?
Smaller tank no filtration. What is a smaller tank? Up to how many liters? Or gallons?
This is my personal tank and experience I have been on the reef hobby since 1996. I no longer try and keep nitrates low. My nitrate will run between 50-80 phosphate stays .02-06. I have wonderful color and growth in my sps and little to no algae. I am almost certain that high phosphate is the reason most reefers fail. I only do a water change at .08 phosphate never before
4 comments on a brs video says volumes
Bucket of salt, and wat what there? Oh, a R.O. machine, r.o.o media, filters, water bill increase. You have some major falacies in a cheap method. Reefing isnt what yall describe it to be, thats a major failure to include in your presentation on why people leave. Reefing isnt cheap, takes more time in up keep and everything dies. Fish stay living, crabs, shrimp, but coral very few keep it alive at a cheap end. Recreate nature, inside a small artificial box, and try to balance a complex ecosystem we dont even fully understand or can describe to its maximum extent, and even the most prestigious reefers, still have issues. And your up there trying to sell it as bad information. Maybe its not a sustainable way to keep living animals in. Especially for profits. I love seeing the reefs but, when you really soend time looking at them do you think with a 90% failure rate, its fair to these creatures? We can never replicate natures oceans. I wish there was a way.
Imagine reagents used to be 8 bucks. Now they're double literally😢
Really interesting. My skimmer is actually making something like boiling water without any stink. In my case i think it is a pump problem because it sometimes make a sort of vibrating noise, and since it do that, the bubble produced are not the same. Did you already see something like that
Don’t buy used Kessil A360x’s. I’ve seen too many people burned by those to think it’s just a coincidence, including myself. I bought three used and thought I got a great deal. Unfortunately I was buying 3 new ones a year later. Buy once Cry once!
Can you elaborate? I have one new 360x, and one used. As long as it's taken care of, why would used ones be a problem? Just curious.
You bought used, so you don't know how well or not the last owners took care of the lights. Kessil probably has one of the best CS I've interacted with. If something happens within the warranty period, they literally send you new ones. I have three 360x over my 150 gallon.
@@andymingni Exactly! That’s why I said don’t buy used… There’s not a lot they. can do if you have no proof of the original purchase. They did however give me a great discount on three new replacements so it eased the pain a little bit.
The trick is to just have money
Saw this in person, it was awesome 🎉
Can you update the description w part 1
Lovely green bubble algae under mushroom at 3:59
We almost went to Reefapalooza NY. So sad we didn’t make it. So glad to still get to see this presentation!
It was a good time... ended up winning 2 raffles and grabbing a bunch of coral
I wish you sold to the uk
Would it be best to install my ro/di before or afer my water softener?
This helped me so much that I have my own now
why show the fish you are talking about?
I had dinos for months. Cleaned the tank like crazy and then realised i should have done the opposite!!! I started to feed daily 2x with frozen foon, added some stock and they went away in DAYS! Tested po4 and no3 and they all went up a little and the dino never came back....for now.
is it safe to keep these larger tanks in an appartment without a floor reinforcement?
6 months?! How are we gonna explain to our wives that well have an empty tank for that long… bruh 😭
I dont get it. So even if a fish, lets say a tang, is quarantined for 30 days, and you put them in a display tank, they can still infect everyone with ick if they become stressed? I have lost every tang I've owned. Tried different salts, rodi systems, water parameters good. They always die on me within 2 weeks. This last blue hippo tang I bought from LFS and started off in a quarantine tank with 1.5ppm copper and it died the next day.
Is there anybody else watching besides me? 😂
