You do NOT Need a Great Intellect to Practice Dhamma

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Many of the people I interact with through this channel often have a background in philosophy, science, sometimes medicine, or other areas that are rather intellectual.
As a result, they approach the Dhamma from an intellectual standpoint and over time, it leads to a certain ``aroma'' that outsiders perceive.
They think that the Dhamma is difficult, hard to understand, complex, complicated, philosophical and often get quite intimidated.
But is this really the case? Is the Dhamma for ``big-brain people'' only?
Practitioners often think a big intellect is necessary to practice Dhamma.
They discard what is not smart/intellectual-sounding.
In reality, Dhamma is simple but hard to implement.
There are no bonus points for phrasing it smart -- liberation is what counts.
You REALLY do not need much. Just endure skilfully and understand dependent origination.
All the intellectual games are there to get you to actually DO IT.

I agree, and I know we all have the Buddha nature. I do believe though there are people out Their who absolutely have no chance of even becoming a steam enterer. I myself had to refocus my practice because I was a self proclaimed intellectual Buddhist. No practice, no Buddha, no enlightenment. I do believe a keen intellect is a big help for practitioners though..

It seems to me that true master teacher would be able to explain dhamma in just a few words since dhamma isn't complicated. Making it's explanation very long and very heady could be defending the purpose as one can get lost in it and start looking for intellectual answers and that's already wrong direction as I understand it for dhamma needs to be practiced not "just" understood. Well it needs to be understood as well but only right practice can set one free. I did struggle with this myself.

If the trainee is ready, a sentence is all it takes for the breakthrough. If the trainee has strong defilements, more and more instructions are necessary

@@TheDhammaHubI agree sir. Where I see the problem is when one isn't ready yet than very elaborate explanation may be sending him to a wrong direction. Like an intellectual pursuit rather than quite simple practice of virtue and restrain to start with.

@@jaroslav6109That surely is always a danger that existed as far bacl as the Buddha's time, where many other sects got lost in such intellectualizations. Yet, the "video on demand" format of KZread cannot offer videos that are always appropriate for each viewer as anyone can search for anything regardless of preconditions^^
