• Van Life: Brutal Attac...
A recent tragic and violent incident involving two retired senior rvers at a rest stop in Nebraska (Link above), has a lot of folks, including myself l,asking the question "Are rest stops too dangerous as boondocking spots for campers, especially solo female nomads and seniors?" I often boondock at rest stops when on the road traveling. But I must admit this Nebraska tragedy has given me pause to reconsider. In this video I take you on a tour of a rest sto0 in California. Now let ke say in advance this is one of the nicer rest stops out there. And, most of the location is visible to anyone else on site. I think the decision to use or not use rest stops depends on the location and basically what is your gut feeling when you pull in. Let me know in the comments if you use rest stops and how you feel about them.

I wouldn’t stay at a rest stop overnight. Just this past Sunday, in the middle of the day I was walking into a rest stop building and a man approached me with some story about him needing a his vehicle towed and he just needed $36. My husband was walking up behind me, stepped in between us and told him we don’t have money to give him. He immediately backed off but I was in shock at how quickly he approached me seemingly out of nowhere. I didn’t realize panhandlers and scammers were targeting rest stops. Be alert and be safe out there everyone.

The more desparate people are, the more brazen their behaviour. One day I was driving out of a Grocery Store parking lot when a man attempted to open one of the back doors of my car, luckily they were locked and the windows were up. A moment later a Police Officer was questioning him about a knife he had been threatening people with. You were fortunate to have your husband with you. Many older single women are not so fortunate and seen as 'sitting ducks' by predators. I rarely go out after dark anymore.

And I do not even have a problem saying at Cracker Barrel when other RVs are there even though Cracker Barrel closes at 10 o’clock. Only one Cracker Barrel at Stewart ferry Pike in Nashville Tennessee looked sketchy so I went to another location.

I stopped one time at a rest stop in Maryland on 95 on my way home from a dog show. It was about 2am. I took my Borzoi up to the bathroom with me and the security guard told me that I couldn't take the dog into the bathroom with me. I told him he had two choices. Either he didn't see the dog and I went about my business or he could walk us back to my car and then walk me up the bathroom and check it to make sure it was safe and then when I was done, he could walk me back to my car. He decided that he didn't see a dog. I walked into the bathroom, put my dog on a down stay outside the cubicle, did my business, came out and washed my hands, picked up the leash and told him to "heel" and we left. No problems. This was about 20 or so years ago.

I had a scary situation happen at a rest stop. Until then, I never considered the danger. I was stopping in for a potty break in the dark (I can't remember if it was early morning or night time). Parking was full and I had to park facing away from the restroom the next row over. As I was coming back out, a man was walking towards me and even with others standing nearby, I jumped into my vehicle, locked my doors, and took off before he said anything to me. He looked so mad that I left so fast. I don't ever trust to stop at them anymore. Life not the same as it was when we were younger. @@gloriouslifeonwheels3621 I don't feel that way. I have a dog that is good to alert me to anyone around and a pet that people don't argue with. As one who is prepared, I feel comfortable stopping at a rest stop at night, in the day or just pulling off the road where I can nap before I continue on. I live in a part of the country that seldom has more than two or three vehicles and maybe a trucker or two at rest stops. Follow your gut instinct, i.e., sixth sense and leave if you have bad feelings. Also, if you pack heat, deal with the psychological ramifications before you have to protect yourself. That way you won't be second guessing yourself when you need to be clear headed.

A lot of people who live in their vans or do family life or alternatively tend to have a bad habit of parking away from everybody else, thinking I'm by myself I'm happier. No, you're not. I recommend parking amongst other vehicles I'll park amongst the other truck drivers. That's what I would do. It's called blending in. That's the best way to do, guys blending don't be alone blend in. It's much safer that way.

At the end of the day, I think doesn't matter where you go. You can be unsafe anyway. You have to use diligence. Be aware of your surroundings, look for red flags but don't live in fear. That's the worst thing you can do. And when you get to parking to sleep at night. I say unless you need food or something else. I say, stay in your band all night until next morning and then come out. I have in mind but I have everything I need. I have a toilet. I have a shower. I have everything I need so when I come to a rest up at night. I don't come out. I'm done for the night. I stay and watch TV. Play video games. Oh, go to sleep, but that's me.

I live in an area that is not highly populated and I was cautious here because there were people that disappeared on the main highways, including women traveling together. Always follow your instincts and be cautious. I traveled 25,000-30,000 miles a year with miles between homes and not uncommon to have 90 miles between towns with no problems. I was always prepared to keep myself safe from predators. I trained regularly, too. I was prepared for the consequences of my actions, also.

I’m an ex-trucker who traveled solo and stayed in rest stops as often as possible. I always felt safe, but you hit the nail on the head about the restrooms. I would never use the restrooms at night or if there weren't plenty of women around. The thing that makes rest areas uniquely dangerous is walking into a restroom with no one around. Anyone can be there waiting for you or follow you in and you are incredibly vulnerable if you do this! Other than that, they are not any more dangerous than any other public space. They are typically clean and beautiful and a great place to stretch your legs. You're also correct about parking near truckers. You're safer with the extra sets of eyes. Thanks for sharing the good advice!

I have stayed a night at some rest stops that I wish I had not stayed at, but I was so tired I had no other choice. But since I believe there is safety in numbers, and although sketchy, there were quite a bit of drivers and in most places truckers also. But once I had to stop at night to use the restroom, and there were no cars, just some trucks and these two men got out at the same time I did and kept looking my way for a bit longer than just a casual glance. I sensed I should have turned around and left right away, but I really needed to go. So I prayed and continued on. I almost ran in once out of their sight and did my business as fast as possible. I decided never to travel at night again. And after what happened to those poor people, I also plan on having my weapon handy all the time. I need to get my permit to carry updated for the area I live in, but once out of this state my other permit kicks in. I now carry my weapon in the car always. Just follow your state's laws and carry insurance also, just to legally protect yourself. be aware of your surroundings. ALWAYS. And thank you so much for your videos.

On my drive home last Sunday I stopped at the first rest stop south west of St Louis about 8:30 am. Small rest stop, lots of truckers, no cars. As I was getting out to walk to rest room another car pulled in. Thanks to your earlier video, rather than walk directly into bathroom, I strolled toward truckers so I could scope out new arrivals. Couple seemed fine, so continued with mission of using restroom but don’t think I would have been so cautious had it not been for the viewing of your first video. So thanks!!

One of them actually fired his gun and the parents took cover next to the car. The parents ripped their kids out of the car and the perps drove off with their car. In a suburban neighborhood, in their driveway. You are probably just as safe in a good rest area.

And, speaking of toilets, a doctor was killed by someone using a hammer at a huge Medical Center in Californa, in a toilet close to the ER, while I was working there. Stalls where people can reach over the top, or that have big gaps close to the floor make occupants far more vulnerable. Toilets in rows, with little space between the doors and the wall, make it simple for a person to be restrained against their will, that is the kind usually seen at Rest Stops. Wouldn't hurt to have pepper spray or some other means of self-protection handy.

I think there are so many variables as to whether a place is safe or not. I stopped at one in Wyoming last week, and the vibes were way off. No on was there until I was about to leave (about 9:15pm) & the truck that pulled in seemed to be following me until they turned off, and that scared me. But obviously, it felt unsafe to me before that even happened. I drove on to Riverton and stayed in the Walmart parking lot instead, and there were lots of RVs, campers, and even some overnight semi trucks. Felt much safer and I was able to relax enough to get rest!

I’ve used that rest stop and there were some pretty shady characters hanging around. I “case” the area just like a cop would. If I use the bathroom I wait and follow in a group of women. That works if it is a pretty busy place. I try to NEVER drive at night if I don’t have to. Thanks you for your informative and helpful videos.

I had traveled from Maine to Wichita in 95 by myself when I moved there. Stoped at rest areas many times along the way. I drove back to Maine twice a year for a couple of years by myself to see Mom and never had any trouble no matter where I stopped. Then Mom died but I still went back once a year to see my brother and his family for a few years. Still going back n forth every few years and the first time I had any trouble was last fall when I had stopped to sleep. I got woken up by the sound of air escaping a tire. I banged hard on the window and the noise stopped n I went back to sleep. When I woke up I checked the tire and sure enough it was down about 20lbs. Not sure why somebody would do something like that, maybe they hate out of staters or maybe van dwellers. Out of 38 years that was the first time I had any kind of problem but I do realize the country is stressed out and anything could happen at anytime and we should be careful out there 💗🙏💗

True. But I am always more mindful and alert to people in a parking lot paying undue attention to me or possibly following me home after I hear about incidents like recent ones involving families or individuals being acosted in their driveways. I think knowing what is happening out there and how someone might have let their guard down in one or more areas helps us all as a reminder to close those safety gaps. I for one aftrr this incident will be more mindful of strangers approaching me at rest stops and will be even more vigilant about locking my doors immediately after getting in my vehicle rather than dilly dallying around first like I sometimes do.

I've been staying at rest stops since the 1970s. I've never had a problem, never seen a problem. Some areas have better stops and some are sketchy. I've gone coast to coast. I take my kids and I think only one time I left because something didn't feel right. I use to have a dog and it did make me feel safer. If someone was to try something with me they would be in for a wide awaking because I will protect us til the end. My Dad was a trucker from when he was a teen til 75 years old. I stop it every rest stop per doctors orders to stretch my legs and always use the bathroom sometimes at night every once in a while I had a bad feeling so I would move the car and wait until other women were going in the restroom. Tennessee you can only stay at a rest stop for two hours and they have people there all the time it seemed. Florida rest stops also seem to have people there working all the time. Georgia very busy.

The roads I travel regularly do not have rest stops and it is often 60 to 120 miles between towns. I hate public restrooms and avoid them when possible. I have places I stop so my dog and I can tend to personal business. I carry what I need for bathroom breaks so I can be comfortable when I'm driving. Some of these places I stop are roads off the highway 50-100 yards, some are trail heads, others are places truckers pull off to nap or take breaks. When I'm finished and my dog is back in the vehicle we make a U turn and return to the highway. This works well for me as I too travel alone.

A traveler appreciates being able to easily and quickly get off/on from the interstate at a rest area. That will appeal to criminals too. Commit a crime and they can escape to the high speeds of an interstate within a minute. I appreciate the restrooms, the easy on/off, and the chance to stretch and walk during the day. But they are pretty low on my list of places to overnight due to the security issues. The couple attacked in Nebraska certainly is not the first or the last rest area tragedy.

Young crazy kids that are high love to show off in front of each other. So I opted not to get out far away from the bathroom and walk I just go right close to the building and park get out get back in my car. Do the trucks noise keep you awake? Their generators for their ACs? I know that rest stop, very nice area. But there are areas along some highways I wouldn’t consider staying overnight alone. Ladies, IMO we should always have some sort of loud alarm or something no matter where we are. 😊

I think it just depends. Most times, I think if it's busy and has a lot of people, you most likely are OK. But this happens to people everywhere, more people are killed in their own homes or neighborhoods than anywhere else, so the risks are the same in my opinion. Situational awareness is your fastest bet, as well as not being isolated and alone

@gloriouslifeonwheels3621 I do, but I'm also prepared for the worst when I do. But I mostly fear animals in that case. But i do avoid areas like that in cities. The more people, the better, in cities. There is a park near my house that everyone says I can stay at, the the few times I sent there at night, the vibe was off. Homeless guy wandering song l around without pants, or the weird lady offering bj's for drugs. During the day, it's nice, peaceful. At night, it's not. But stay safe everyone. Thanks for your videos

I've been known to find a church (the denomination I attend, usually) and use their parking lot. It has worked well for me. They are often in residential areas and it is quiet and well lit.

I've traveled all over and stayed at rest stops to sleep, I've never felt unsafe at them. You can't live in fear. But I've always had a knife with me, if i needed it which i never had to. If you don't like the area then just leave. Stay at a gas station where they have cameras running 24/7. Or install cameras in your vehicle. Post a note saying you're being recorded now leave. People who live in sticks and bricks have break-ins too, so it happens. Life anywhere can be scary, you just can't live in fear. My friend lives alone in a house and sleeps with a machete next to her bed. Even tho she's not fearful about living alone. Seems like you're installing fear into people and they're not going to want to do vanlife, but some people have no choice, like you said. Where do you expect them to go? This world is crazy right now and we're just trying to live life without fear.

I recommend strip mall. Parking is better. I don't like truck stops that much if I have to I will but strip malls are the best not Walmart parking lots back in a day. Walmart parking lot was good. But it's kind of stopping that now. I say street more parking lot is the best or Cracker Barrel is the best.

I'll be very leery in rural areas that are not populated. Some unscrupulous young party people cause very much damage out of boredom sad but true. That's why I don't understand why a lot of these people go out far away from the mainstream and live. I believe there are so many that are running from the law that are doing the same thing and I would not feel safe. Especially in the southwest where there are a lot of the border migrants coming in. I would be afraid someone would want to steal my vehicle and kill me for my ID, bank account and whatnot. No thank you I will just stick to east coast and familiar populated places

First, I want to compliment you on your earrings. They go well with your blue outfit and suit you. I would not have a problem with staying there. Seems well lit and quite a few people and truckers around. Probably wouldn't have a problem with the back area in the daytime, but I'm a guy. I've always been very aware of my surroundings and trust my instincts. Looks like it is very well kept, compared to the one Lindy was showing on her channel. The one she showed was disheveled and looked abandoned. I guess it depends on how the vibes feel. Nice video Carol!😁✌🤟

I didn't know you were allowed to sleep overnight at rest stops in California. Isn't there a 4 hour limit? Trucking is not what it used to be. I'm not saying all, but I'd say 1/3 of them are creepy. Many law enforcements believe a lot of serial killers are truckers because they are gone the next day, so there isn't anyone around to track. The US is not the same after the pandemic, I feel it's almost every man for themselves. I don't even like driving snymore because it seems all the trolls are driving when they're not making mean comments on social medis. 😢

I agree with Carol. Drive in the day time for safety sake if you have vehicle problems. I use church parking lots, sometimes. I prefer to park off a dirt road not visible from the highway, but, that is me and I have a big dog and packing heat. I've never been one to like crowds. But, then I live in sparsely populated country and feel comfortable away from people. If you are not comfortable with that then don't even consider it. And most of all, listen to your gut feeling. If your senses tell you it isn't safe, leave. There is a reason for our senses.
