I just ordered this bass today! I couldn't resist the curiosity of trying a fretless bass, and for the price I think this will do just fine. Making a fretless bass of a violin bass like a genuine violin should be, makes sense.

This bass has been so much fun. Running a compressor and a few equalisation options through a Zoom B1on multi-effects pedal opens up a whole new world of phatness and expression...I'm all fingers and thumbs all over this bass..left&right hands!! The neck is so comfy too. The only drawback is the whacky control panel, whose switches are counter-intuively connected to the pickups, and also sympathetically resonate an annoying buzz, when playing unamplified.. Intonnation is easy using the harmonics on the 12th and 19th frets' position dots. All over, a unique window into the low-end and fun, fun fun.

This is one of my regular rotating basses. Coming from standard fretted bass, it was a tough cookie to crack. For those interested in this bass, here are some of my takeaways. 1. Change the tuners when you get this thing. 2. Don't try to play it outside on a sunny day, it goes out of tune like crazy, and is extremely sensitive to humidity changes, if you're cool with tuning between songs, then you're good. But don't expect to set it and forget it. 3. Absolutely change out the shit HB strings. Go for some LaBella beatles bass strings. The strings that came on mine originally had an issue where the actual core inside the strings broke, but the string didn't so it resulted in this weird issue where the harmonic was louder than the fundamental, resulting in out of tune sound. It's a HB, so you're going to have to work to get it to where it needs to be if you plan on actually using this thing as a working musician. The Pups are actually extremely close to my 3k plus dollar hofner and I actually like them a bit better as they have more output and thump. This thing is a killer deal and the upright tone you get mic'ing it and using the neck pup, while playing up on the fretboard is fan fucking tastic.

I have one too and agree with everything here. I fitted Wilkinson tuners for stability, Rotosound tapewound string (tried D'Addario tapewound, these are much smoother for slides), Graphtech nut and replaced the bridge with a Hofner ebony one. It now does everything from double bass sounds to jazz bass, just vary the switches and volumes for tone changes. This is genuinely one of my favourites (I have 20 basses), it plays so well and with great tone, electronics are absolutely fine out of the box, just choose strap height so your arm rests on the body to counter the neck dive and it's all day comfy. Amazing bass!

Which replacement tuners would you guys recommend for this bass?

@@Tonceitoys I went with Gotoh GB-707's. They are drop ins. The other guy here went with Wilkinson's, but I'm not sure if they require extra drilling or not.

I used Wilkinson WJB 750 tuners, which are also drop in replacements. They are slightly heavier than the originals, but far more stable and being open geared I think look more appropriate on the HB.

Interesting, I might change the tuners if I actually like it once my bass arrives. Does anybody know the string spacing at the nut and bridge? I have a Nordymute foam that is about 19mm between each string, I don't know if that would work with this bass. Also, how about the quality of the nut? I'd like to know the string spacing from the nut just in case I might change it to a TusQ nut in the future.

To all the “Hofner haters”, yes it’s a poor design and doesn’t do many things very well, but as a specialized tool it is magnificent. Imagine playing “for the benefit of Mr Kite” on anything else. Doesn’t work.
