    I have a 2016 22kWh Zoe on a £49 per month battery lease. If I buy out the lease for £3800, that is equivalent to 6.5 years of monthly lease payments. I think I will wait for Renault make me a better offer!

    They won't make you a better offer as this is there AT COST option. However as your battery gets OLDER and you pay more LEASE it will technically be worth less. Until you get to a point that there's only 1000 customers left with lease battery we won't see them wanting to sell less than cost and judging by amount of Battery leased zoes this will be A LONG WAY OFF

    they wouldnt give you a better deal than just buying it in the first place. How would it be fair that buying it outright was 7k more expensive than renting it for 3 year at £800 a year and then buying it for £2000? Dream on.

    That's my thinking too. If I still had my Zoe (P/X last Tuesday) I would be sitting on this until I was one of the last few (could take a couple of years) and wait until RCI want to close that dept or wait until it's p/x time and let the dealer take the hit. As you've said, it's not like they're making an offer you can't refuse.

    Lol - "tyre puncture repair relay" ! Was that reference to my double-blowout recentl 😊 Thanks for the information as ever Nick. I'm going to keep my lease running on my Luigi Motors 2015 22kWh exactly for the breakdown reason. Also, I don't need to buy out the lease just yet unless RCI remove the breakdown cover. Yes, I know I could source that cheaper elsewhere, but realistically I financed the Zoe for X years and I'm not topping that up to buy out the battery. Finally, I keep my cars pretty much until they die, so I won't benefit from a possible higher re-sale price. Cheers Nick!

    Great video as always, got a new subscriber here. The main reasons I started to consider it were 1) Ive used a local EV friendly great garage recently for last 2 annual services (rather than the local "Renault dealer" Arnold Clark who are awful) and Im worried this possibly is against the terms of the battery lease and 2) Im just anticipating it being an absolute nightmare to try and sell a 2016 40KW Zoe (which also has very minor bodywork damage 🤦‍♂️) stuck with a battery lease. Worried ive got a ticking timebomb on my hands haha

    As soon as they ditched the lease option on the ZE50 this was inevitable, It's happened a bit quicker than I expected but I think its a really good thing, long overdue. Lease Zoe's are selling really well 2nd hand at the moment but mostly due to lack of choice & availability. In a couple of years with many more options on the used marked I think they will become very hard to sell with the lease. No one is going to want a 7 year old car they have to pay £50 battery rent on forever. (look at the Flex Leaf's, no one tries to sell them without removing the lease). Once you get below the £3k price to buy it out I would say it's worth it, you will get a good chunk of it back when you sell. Of all the things that could go wrong on a Zoe the battery itself is pretty far down the list so I would be happy with the 3 years warranty left on a 15 plate. 3 years of lease payments is a minimum of about £1800. That's going to pay for some pretty major repairs if something goes wrong and if nothing does it's better in your pocket than Renaults.

    As the previous video i hinted i thought this was coming but i bet it wouldn't happen this year why i ate my words. I disagree there become harder to sell as they get older with lease in fact the reverse could be true as they get older having the battery warranty becomes more important not less. However least now everyone has there own options to purchase or lease

    It’s an interesting conundrum. The value of the leasing almost increases in value with time due to the benefits it offers ( battery replacement and the other benefits you mentioned). Like you say can’t see why owners would give up their benefits at those prices. Or, put another way Renault have pitched the price way too high to make it really attractive. Let’s face it unless you can see it’s really attractive to do so then the easiest option is to carry on with the “small” monthly “insurance” (lease) payment.

I am curious as to whether they will ask for mileage like they do for the Leaf. Also got a stunning deal on the car a year and a half ago so it makes any deal quite interesting. Yes the lease covers you for all breakdowns, shame the people on the phone don't all know that. I was left stranded when they kept saying the car was out of warranty so it isn't covered. If one were to buy out the battery lease on an older Zoe that has a newer battery in it does the 8 year warranty run from when the car was registered or from when the replacement battery was fitted. In your previous video you felt sure that Renault would not allow battery buy out because it was a great money spinner for them, especially as the batteries have been so reliable. That being the case and if they are so reliable surely it is worth buying the lease out and not having those monthly payments, I know you referred to break down cover but that quite cheap to have via ones insurance, LV insurance have a brilliant policy for EVs. It doesn’t effect me as I drive a Kona Electric which comes with 8year cover should I break down and provided I have it serviced by Hyundai. However my friend wife drives a Zoe and it could be of interest to her.

  • @NicolasRaimo

    @NicolasRaimo

    4 жыл бұрын

    The price is on the YEAR of the battery however the warranty is on the YEAR of the car. So if you have a 2 year old zoe which had a new battery on year 1 then the warranty for the battery is 8 years from the time of the Zoe not the battery. It's the same as if you had a NEW wheel baring for example they only cover the warranty for 3 years from date of reg NOT 3 years from when the part was replaced.

  • @paulstansfield

    Is the price to buy out the battery lease solely based on age? I run a 2017 ZE40 with a leased battery and I pay for the unlimited mileage option. I would expect it to be less expensive to buy as it's had more miles done on it, and more of my money has been sunk into it to pay the lease costs to date. It makes no sense for me to buy out the battery if it's going to cost the same for a car with 30+k miles on the clock as one with 10k miles. It's a step in the right direction by RFI, but they need to make the offer more financially attractive if they expect punters to take it up. Keep up the good work!

  • @NicolasRaimo

    @NicolasRaimo

    4 жыл бұрын

    I've been told its just based on age yes. There argument would be higher mileage is higher risk of warranty payout. Also i'd guess renault would base there lease write off cost on the lowest payments. With a high mileage unlimited option your likely hit that 100k limit and therefore warranty on battery be worth more

  • @paulstansfield

    I just popped into my local Renault dealer to pick my car up from its service and MOT and whilst I was there, I got talking to a salesman about the new ZE50. He said he'd take my ZE40 in part-exchange and they'd buy the battery out before putting it on their forecourt as a "battery-owned" model. He obtained a quote from Renault Finance on my behalf of the cost to buy the battery - £5,500 incl VAT! And you're right Nicholas, this price is based solely on age, not mileage which makes this option a non-starter in my circumstances. The ZE50 is very nice, but the discounts are not there to be had at this stage for cash sales. I'm better off paying the battery lease costs and running the ZE40 for a little longer until better options become available.

    Hi Nick - really informative video. Please could I pick your brains? It’s looking like I’m going to have to move house to somewhere which is 40 miles (an hours’ drive) away from my workplace. I’ve looked at cheap electric cars for commuting, and I’ve whittled it down to the Zoe! They’re a great price, highly economical, look nice and you can charge them straight away from home (right?). I’ve seen one for £5,950 with 22K (2015) and £6,490 with 5K (2014) - is there anything I should be aware of, please? Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated as this is completely new territory for me. Best wishes, Sam

From the 1st February 2018 then the i models had an 8 year 100,000 mile warranty. I think people need to look at the lease they are paying and consider how long they want to keep the car. Multiply the cost of the lease x the time you are expecting to keep the car v the cost of buying out the battery. If one has an advantage over the other make your decision. What this will do is make older cars easier to sell.

  • @NicolasRaimo

    @NicolasRaimo

    4 жыл бұрын

    You can't really do that. As buying out the battery lease would increase the cars value, where leasing it does not so times by the figures gives a false reading.

  • @TeesTrev

    @TeesTrev

    I agree with Nick it a bit more complicated. Consider if the 2 amounts came to the same value. With 1 you have breakdown cover but with the buyout you now have a car with a higher value. It's not as straight forward as it first seems. Also inflation alters the true values of the monthly payment over time.

  • @FFVoyager

    @FFVoyager

    @@NicolasRaimo my guess is that the buy-out cost will fall over time, so if you have a car you expect to keep for 2 years before you expect to be changing you have to make a guess at the fee value added to the car then too. Also the used value of the car, in what ever state of battery ownership, in 2022/3 could be a *lot* less than now as there will be a lot more newer electric cars on the market as demand is met and the older Zoe (and Leaf) could look rather long in the tooth by then. I really don't value an additional rescue service. We have been with Autoaid for a decade and they are as cheap as chips. And excellent. It's good that the battery buy-out option is there now though.
