    Not just is the old hardware a good stepping stone, the iPod 2g also actually used off-the-shelf arm processor (Samsung S5L8720) with PowerVR MBX Lite GPU. This means there shouldn't be any major undocumented or poorly documented behaviour as is more likely with fully Apple chips. EDIT: Corrected the GPU from: PowerVR SGX535 (which i got from wikipedia, and is wrong, to PowerVR MBX Lite which should be correct)

    It's great to see preservation of hardware like this. As a little fun fact iPod touches are extremely cheap. I got a 4th gen iPod for under 10$ and they should all be easily jailbroken so you can re experience the days of old. • @Bennett.R

    @Bennett.R

    6 ай бұрын

    This was my same thought initially, though after thinking some more, it would have been more surprising for iOS to *never* have had any error handling for lack of Wi-Fi hardware, and what we’re seeing here is probably a remnant of sorts from the prototyping stages of the specific version of iOS and applicable devices. I always forget that, at least at one point in time, the earliest prototypes for iDevices were those *HUGE* multi-layer exposed mainboards with LCDs just sitting on top. So if/when a Wi-Fi module on one of those were to get disconnected, it does make sense that iOS would have needed to handle it _somehow_ .

  • @SKCro.

    @SKCro.

    6 ай бұрын

    @@Bennett.R That's true, but the error handing is implemented in a way that seems surprisingly user-friendly - you'd think they'd just remove the option entirely or do nothing when the switch is turned on, but nope, they actually added proper code to handle these situations in a way that's user-friendly (greying out the WiFi icon and switch).

  • @Bennett.R

    @Bennett.R

    6 ай бұрын

    @@SKCro. Perhaps in certain rare cases, someone’s Wi-Fi module might have failed somehow, just not to the point of preventing iOS from booting, and this was implemented in order to handle that potential occurrence appropriately. That’s really my best guess. I don’t know much at all about the specific QEMU emulation project/fork for this, but it could be that it’s been based on some very early/non-final build of that iOS, and the handling is only present there, not in the final/GM/whatever.

    Honestly I miss the first gen through 5th gen iOS devices. I feel like Apple's real downfall for me was the release of iOS 7. The design of the OS, etc, felt far better in previous version. It kills me to this day that the entire UI is absolutely cluttered with white/pastel colors. I missed the skeuomorphic design of iOS 6 and earlier version. Why they felt the need to ever change what was already great looking OS is beyond me. The move to the "new" iOS 7 theme was one of the main reasons I switched to Android and I still don't regret it almost a decade later. It's also a damn shame the UI design hasn't changed in nearly a decade, either. They're still using the same iOS 7-centric theme for everything with the white/pastel colors and I absolutely hate it. I can't stomach using an iOS device for more than a few minutes.

Android does at least allow selecting an accent color that some apps can use so there is that but still super dull.

    That's funny, I literally received an iPod Touch 4 yesterday to mess with older versions of iOS for the first time, I never had any iOS devices at the time (well, my brother had an iPod Touch 2G, but I never really got to use it) and I'm learning how to jailbreak, what IPAs are, etc.

    What iOS version is yours and have you jailbroken it yet?

    @@gobivfx1893 It has iOS 6 and yes, I did jailbreak it. Can I just how horrible the process of jailbreaking is? Doing it is not even that hard, it's just finding the right way in the 400 that exists.

    Emulation is awesome! So there’s this and TouchHLE. Man I would love to play CoD Zombies on my Anbernic RG556. Wish Archetype lasted long enough but then again it wouldn’t need emulation, just a nice upgrade to modern iOS and Android as well… but ofc it’ll come with a damn battle pass 😅

    The iPod Touch 2g on ios 4.2.1 is my favorite definition of "not good". The emulator is impressive though.
