You can be happy without changing your life | Cassie Holmes | TEDxManhattanBeach

Many feel time poor-like there aren’t enough hours in the day to get it all done. And a common belief is that if we had more free time, we would be happier. Cassie Holmes, a UCLA professor who studies the relationship between time and happiness, found it’s not about having more. She uncovers myth-breaking results and ways to spend the time we do have to bring greater joy into our lives. #joy Cassie Holmes is a professor at UCLA’s Anderson School of Management, an award-winning teacher and researcher on time and happiness, and bestselling author of Happier Hour: How to Beat Distraction, Expand Your Time, and Focus on What Matters Most.
Happier Hour is a Wall Street Journal Bestseller, and was selected as an Amazon Best Book of 2022, a “must read” by Forbes, the Washington Post and the Financial Times, and was featured in such outlets as the Today Show, CBS Mornings, CNN, NPR’s Hidden Brain, and GOOP with Gwyneth Paltrow.
Holmes’s academic research has been widely published in leading academic journals. The course she developed and now teaches, Applying the Science of Happiness to Life Design, is among UCLA’s most popular for MBAs and Executive MBAs alike.
Prior to joining UCLA, Cassie was a tenured faculty member at Wharton, and she has a Ph.D. from Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business and a B.A. from Columbia. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Peace is the goal. Happiness is a choice and a byproduct of peace. If you chase happiness, then you have to have the flip side of sadness, one can't exist without the other, and it's a fool's game.

I never agree with people on Ted’s comments but this is correct. It is unsustainable and unhealthy to force happiness, finding peace is what opens the door to happiness.

Happiness is synonymous with peace. Excitement and exhilaration are often confused for happiness. These are the fleeting moments that are chased by ungrounded people. Being grateful for the small things like she speaks on is aligning with finding peace, gratitude, contentment and in turn a level of security and happiness.

This is what Buddhism says- to find joy in each moment. It’s good that someone in the West has done research on it now- it’s been known in the East for thousands of years.

I really hope your message will resonate with my partner. It's not that I demand for a 24/7 undivided attention but when she has the time for me, she often cuts me off and answers phone calls from people whom she considers a big part of her life... Leaving me feeling like I'm a spare tire, which she will only use whenever she needed me... "I'll get back to you, love, we'll have more time later." ... Later means having to postpone my sleep or other things to do that are important to me. I agree with you that the quality of time spent is more important than the quantity of time, because, nobody knows when we will be gone forever.

Happiness is a personal choice. Some people have all the luxuries, comfort, time availability, and still remain unhappy. Others face trial and tribulation but remain happy.

The grass is always greener where it's watered. How we see ourselves and what's around us is what we experience. Gratitude is what happens when we're paying attention to the good in our lives. These are all mental strengths and coping mechanisms. Thank you for touching on this important subject.

One will be surprised how many "obvious' things are scientifically much more complex or even proven wrong. In fact, people's gut feeling and scientific research often show completely different results. Therefore, it's very important researching even "obvious" assumptions.
